Book Introduction
Literary achievements of Kim Yu of 『The Lion Mart』 and Oh Seung-min of 『The Red Shoes』
A poignant tribute to all those who have been pushed out of the world's sight.
A tender confession to myself and my loved ones
Highly recommended by representative K-literature authors Kim Jung-mi and Shim Yun-kyung!

"To a Chair" is a picture book in which an old woman who runs a hole-in-the-wall shop alone on the outskirts of the city calmly tells her story to an old chair.
The grandmother brings the sofa chair her daughter has used for a long time and examines it carefully.
One day, someone rummages through the chair and steals a sponge.
Who could it be? A thrilling mystery unfolds, ending with a heart-wrenching, poignant emotion and a lingering aftertaste.

Kim Yu, a warm-hearted and humorous writer who attracts attention from critics and readers with every piece he publishes, was joined by Oh Seung-min, an illustrator who has built up solid foundations through over 200 diverse works.
The two seasoned writers exquisitely weave together the world's neglected entities—old chairs, corner shops, shabby empty houses, elderly people living alone, stray cats—and make them the main characters on stage.
Moreover, it conveys a deep sense of emotion through a visual transformation that turns away from the useless view of 'old things' that have lost their practicality and rediscovers the value of 'oldness' that has survived the passage of time.
This work is deeply imbued with a deep sense of affection and gratitude toward the precious person next to me.
It also conveys the fact that the driving force for continuing life is not alone, but 'togetherness' and 'each other'.

The picture book 『To the Chair』, a fantastic encounter between text and pictures, shows literary achievement and depth in just 40 pages.
After closing the book, you might find yourself thinking of your precious loved one with a heart full of excitement and joy, and tenderly confessing how grateful you are for being there, for simply being there.
It would be fine if that affectionate object were 'me'.
Just as the chair in the work represents the grandmother herself, it is as if the grandmother is encouraging the chair, and thus herself!

Publisher's Review
"A beautiful life movie... I couldn't help but shed tears."
_ A heartfelt tribute to all those who have been pushed out of the world's sight!

One day, an old woman who lives alone and runs a small shop on the outskirts of the city takes her daughter's old sofa chair and takes good care of it.
A chair brings a little excitement to Grandma's daily life.
The chair provides a comfortable backrest for your grandmother, and also makes you feel like the CEO of a big company.
The work unfolds in the form of an old woman calmly telling her story to this old chair.

The luxurious grandeur of the gorgeous floral antique sofa chair has faded with time, and no one pays attention to it because it looks old and outdated, and it is an old chair that you have to throw away, saying, “It’s a shame, but I have to throw it away.”
My grandmother identifies herself with the chair and tells me stories from the past, and in the end, she expresses her affection and gratitude towards the precious people around me and myself, leaving a deep impression.
Isn't this the feeling of being overwhelmed after watching "A Beautiful Life Movie"?

The work exquisitely weaves together objects that have been pushed out of the world's attention, such as old chairs, corner shops on the outskirts, shabby empty houses, elderly people living alone, and street cats, and sets them on stage to maximize the theme.
The writing and illustrations are skillful in their use of literary devices, and the two authors' warm concern and sincere affection for the marginalized and the underprivileged and children lie at the foundation of this.

A painting filled with sincerity captures not only the eyes but also the heart.
Teacher Oh Seung-min's paintings
It was like watching a beautiful movie about life.
When we reached the last scene
Tears welled up in my eyes without me realizing it.
_ Kim Yu

“Let’s look forward to each other and stay together for a long time.”
_ A tender confession to myself and my loved ones

One day, a thief appears, rummaging through chairs and stealing sponges.
A tense mystery(?) continues, and the culprit is revealed to be a cat.
The grandmother follows the cat into the empty house and searches the house thoroughly.
The story unfolds as if it will reveal the identity of the thief and his hideout, adding to the liveliness of the play, and the moment the sponge's usefulness is revealed, a heartwarming gasp erupts.
The sponge is something the mother cat brought for her kittens on cold days.
The grandmother recalls her past when she was extremely poor due to the cat's maternal love.
After that, the grandmother and the cat become a family and live happily together.
The unexpected connection created by the chair adds vitality to the grandmother's daily life and the atmosphere of the village.
When we are together rather than alone, when we lean on each other and share both pain and joy, life becomes richer and brighter.

"To the Chair" reminds us that "parting" is also a rite of passage in life, and reminds us of the precious people around us.
Like a grandmother who has to live apart from her married daughter, like a daughter who has had to throw away a chair that shared difficult and happy moments with her, it is a separation that everyone experiences.
Maybe that's why.
Those who are by my side, those I love, become even more affectionate.
After closing the book, you may find yourself expressing your gratitude to your loved ones, your precious ones, simply for existing, with a heart full of excitement and joy.
It would be fine if that affectionate object were 'me'.
Just as the chair in the work represents the grandmother herself, it is as if the grandmother is encouraging the chair, and thus herself!

As I read Mr. Kim Yu's manuscript and drew my grandmother's story, I thought of my mother.

In the image of the grandmother carefully looking after the old chair and the cats.

Thank you for reminding me of the love my late mother left me.

Does it have to be useful?
_ A warm gaze that rediscovers the value of 'oldness'

“You’re talented too.
“Where did you find this?”
“You brought it here? I brought it here from my daughter’s house!” _ From the text

Some people consider 'old and worn-out things' as junk, but my grandmother's perspective is different.
To my grandmother, a chair is more than just a place to sit.
Beyond its practical value, the chair is a 'sublime treasure' steeped in the past years, a 'sweet memory' that holds onto precious memories with my daughter, and now a cat playground, a shelter for the neighbors, and a space for communication between neighbors.
The warm gaze of the two authors, who rediscover the value of 'old things' that have lost their practicality, conveys deep emotions.

Literary achievements of writer Kim Yu X illustrator Oh Seung-min .

This is the first collaboration between two of Korea's leading children's book authors, who have long produced excellent books! The fact that the warm, humorous writing of Kim Yu is paired with the irreplaceable, unique illustrator Oh Seung-min has already generated significant anticipation.
Author Kim Yu, who has recently received much love for her picture books 『Heart Bus』 and 『Lion Mart』, supports a warm world where the author's values of 'togetherness,' 'each other,' and 'solidarity' are alive in this work as well.
Here, the strong and heavy drawings, lovely characters, and emotional landscapes, all driven by Oh Seung-min's signature deep blue and yellow colors, have achieved literary success in the picture book.

[Author's Note]

The word 'mother' is full of affection.
My mother, who I had to leave too soon, would have been a grandmother by now if she had been by my side.
I live remembering my mother's smell and laughter.
"To the Chair" is an old but unforgettable story filled with a yearning that one does not want to lose.
It took a long time to write, erase, and rewrite before it was released to the world.
I hope this book can be a place where anyone can simply rest and relax.
Like a mother's embrace, where you can lean on your lonely heart on a lonely day.
_ Kim Yu

"To the Chair" is a work based on watercolors, drawn with conte, pencil, and pen.

It was no easy task to hand-draw a picture book of nearly 50 pages with thin lines.

Even though I drew for 10 to 15 hours a day, my progress was slow.
All the while drawing
I thought of my mother who is no longer in this world.
This is a work that was completed with tenacity, containing that longing heart.
