A clear, blue midsummer sea… …
The dark side hidden beneath it
On a bright, sunny summer afternoon, the protagonist looks out at the vast ocean and jumps into the water.
The protagonist, who was swimming with all his might, cutting through the gentle waves, and then floating on the surface for a while, enjoying the refreshing feeling of the sea, suddenly opens his eyes with a strange sensation.
Among the floating discarded fishing nets, you make eye contact with a fish caught on a plastic bottle hook, and as you chase the fish, you lose consciousness as you are pulled by a huge force from below.
The protagonist, who opened his eyes in the deep sea, witnesses a gruesome scene, like a graveyard of whales and plastic bags floating everywhere like jellyfish...
From fish dying while wrapped in plastic bags, to whales entangled in discarded fishing nets and ropes and impaled on iron hooks, to the sight of large-scale fishing operations that scour the ocean floor with giant nets, the protagonist witnesses one horrific scene after another in the depths of the ocean and desperately tries to save the surviving lives by any means necessary.
The wink of the plastic bottle ring fish that led the protagonist to the sea like a messenger might have been an appeal from sea life to open their eyes to the reality beneath the seemingly calm and peaceful surface of the sea.
I want you to look straight at the truth of the sea at this very moment, which you have been trying to ignore.

Pieces of dark truth held by the vast ocean
The dream of that cool midday
With only intense images of blue and black
A wordless picture book that criticizes human selfishness.
This book lacks two elements that can be found in most picture books or graphic novels.
It is the absence of flashy colors and text.
Duotone images, which adjust brightness and darkness according to changes in space and time, allow you to focus more on visual elements, as if watching a black and white movie.
In addition, by completely eliminating text that directly describes the protagonist's situation or emotions, we are forced to listen more seriously to the voice conveyed by the image.
Silence is a louder cry.
This picture book, which is like a daydream of a protagonist of unknown age and gender, vividly exposes the reality of the ocean with images alone, without a single line of text, like a documentary.
This work is the first picture book by the young author Kim Su-jin, and boldly captures the desolate landscape of the sea, which the author has always longed for and held in awe, using only strong visual language.
In a world where problems like the discharge of contaminated water from Fukushima, microplastics, and garbage islands threaten the ocean, the source of all life, this work is a valuable opportunity for children and adults to think together about a sustainable future.
Seen through the eyes of a traveler who has set foot in an unfamiliar place
Pieces of truth held by the vast ocean
There is life everywhere in the ocean.
Life exists from the shoreline where our feet touch the sea surface to the deepest part of the ocean, more than 10,000 meters below the surface.
Perhaps we could see the sea as life itself.
At some point, the ocean, which was so rich in life, began to suffer from the problem of marine debris.
But still people are not alert.
Even though we hear that the ocean is covered with garbage, it is difficult to realize that it will soon come back to us and destroy us.
Perhaps it is because the ocean overflowing with trash is not immediately visible.
The author says he felt the need to talk more about today's oceans, which are giving up their place for life to plastic waste.
I believed that we humans should first have respect and awe for the ocean, and planned this book, which features a protagonist who observes the majestic yet desolate underwater landscape through the eyes of a traveler who has accidentally set foot in an unfamiliar place, and strives to restore it to its original beauty.
