Humanities Essays on Reading Life at SeaLife is often said to be a mountain climb.
However, the gaze of this book is not towards the mountains, but towards the sea.
Opening this book will make you want to see the sea.
Waves, islands, lighthouses, beaches, etc. This book by French philosopher Laurence Devillers proves how much the sea can provide humans with various things to think about.

Strong recommendations from prominent figures in various fields, including Choi Jae-cheon, Lee Hae-in, Yoon Dae-hyun, and Jang Jae-hyung.
Overwhelming praise from local French media
“This book guides you on the path to becoming the only island called ‘oneself’ in the flowing life.
“Life is not something I live by my own will, but something I just go with the flow.”
Choi Jae-cheon (Professor Emeritus, Department of Eco-Science, Ewha Womans University, Chairman of the Biodiversity Foundation)
"How can one gain such profound, broad, and new insights into life and the sea? I read with amazement throughout."
_ Lee Hae-in (nun, poet)
In these times, when we feel the need to focus on the essence more than ever, there is nature that shows us 'infinity' and the true nature of life.
The 'sea' is that which is calm yet rough, seems to be close yet quickly disappears, and reveals a quiet yet strong presence.
There is no movement as natural as the waves of the sea, and no lifeline as great as the seas surrounding the continent.
The courage of the sailors, the ever-bright light of the lighthouse, the strength of the sharks that keep swimming, and even the rough waves that never look the same.
The sea, a living, breathing philosophy, inspires us with its very existence, teaching us profound wisdom and unexpected philosophies of life.
"All Life Flows" is a humanities essay by Laurence Debiller, who was selected as the best philosophy professor in France in 2022. After its publication, it received rave reviews from the French press and became an Amazon bestseller.
The author advises that in order to properly 'navigate' an unfamiliar 'life', one must understand the sea.
Because the sea is the nature that most closely resembles our lives.
By listening to the philosophical thoughts posed by the sea, where hardship and adversity, joy and happiness, birth and death coexist, we can find the answer to how we should live in the future.
Even if life sometimes seems like acrobatics, even if life rushes past you, even if you step back from it for a moment, there is no need to be frustrated or hesitant.
Like the ocean that waves without stopping for a moment, life flows naturally with waves.
To become such a “captain who directly controls life” is perhaps the most beautiful oath we can take as we turn the last page of this book.

Into the book
The sea is life.
That too is a life that continues infinitely.
Life is limited to just one for everyone, but when we look at the sea that will never dry up or disappear, we begin to mistakenly believe that our lives, like the sea, are endlessly continuing.
--- p.34
Nothing in our lives disappears forever.
But we live to a different rhythm than the sea.
It's a rhythm that can't be easily reversed once it's out of sync.
By watching the waves come and go, we can listen to the truth they are telling us.
You can find the strength to leap forward and the energy to recover within yourself.
It's all true.
Recovery is the ability to empty ourselves of everything we have.
Even if it seems difficult, it has to be done that way.
--- pp.49~50
Life is like the misfortunes that the sea brings, and nothing is guaranteed.
So what should we do when danger strikes? Run away.
To put it bluntly, it is 'running a tightrope'.
Running away can be helpful, but it also takes courage to be honest and say that you have no other choice but to avoid it.
--- p.78
Swimming is an exercise that reduces narcissism.
If you feel anxious about achieving a goal you've set, you can shake off that anxiety by breaking free from the ego that tries to package yourself like a marketable product.
What do I gain then? Freedom, weightlessness, and a reasonable doubt about eternity.
--- pp.122~123
We each have our own big anchor.
It is a large anchor that calms the pain and allows you to rest when the wind blows in your heart.
Because we have such a large anchor, we can receive the grace of rest.
--- p.189
In the sea, anyone can become the only protagonist.
Because we are the only captains at sea.
No matter how much help you have from technology and the wind, or how many colleagues you have around you, the only one you can trust is yourself.
Making decisions at sea means facing risk and making decisions in uncertain situations.
Ambiguous decisions are not allowed.
You have to make quick decisions and jump in proactively.
--- pp.198~199
As we live, we sometimes rejoice in success, and sometimes we just go on silently even when the wind blows.
Likewise, even when we are unable to move or face adversity, we constantly ask ourselves questions to understand our actions.
If there is a huge iceberg blocking your life right now, you have an opportunity to grow.
It doesn't matter if it's a harsh winter or a hot summer.
That too is a life that continues infinitely.

Publisher's Review
“If you have to discover one philosophy before you die, go to the sea!”
A story about the sea, philosophy, and life from France's greatest philosopher.
Everyone needs philosophy while living.
Because doing philosophy means thinking hard about the problems of life.
But so far we have only talked about philosophy and life from a terrestrial perspective.
70 percent of the Earth is covered by ocean, yet we have forgotten that and only looked at the land.
Now we must go out to sea.
"All Life Flows" is a humanities essay by Laurence Devillers, considered one of France's top philosophy professors. After its publication in 2022, it became a bestseller on Amazon France and received rave reviews from the French press, with the book being evaluated as helping us discover the natural existence hidden deep within us by philosophically interpreting the sea and life.
“The sea is life.
“A life that continues infinitely.”
Deep insight and wisdom into life seen through the sea
Author Laurence Devillers advises that to properly 'navigate' the unfamiliar 'life', one must understand the sea.
Because the sea is the nature that most closely resembles our lives.
The sea is where the sun rises and sets, where life begins and ends, where it gives life and where it kills.
A place that seems to absorb and embrace all the rain, but sometimes spits it out harshly to warn, a place that is consistent yet not consistent, a place that is connected to every corner of the globe, but reveals itself in different colors wherever you go.
The author says that all of this resembles life.
Life is as full of joy and happiness as it is of hardship and adversity, and what comes comes and what goes, and not a single day is the same.
Sometimes it's up and down and difficult, but in the end, everything gets better and becomes calm.
Nothing in life is unimportant, but that doesn't mean you have to give everything too much meaning and get caught up in it.
Everything comes and goes, rippling naturally like the sea.
What should we protect in times like these?
The philosophy of life in “All Life Flows” is firm and simple.
It's like living like the sea.
Focus on the present, let every moment of life flow naturally, but do not be swept away by the flow, but hold yourself firmly, and within it, find the true meaning and value that life gives you, and discover how you should live from now on.
“What could be a more beautiful oath than to become the captain of your own life?”
The sea speaks to you who needs guidance in life.
Life looks like one lump from afar, but up close it's a collection of pieces.
When we say 'life', most people are talking about their entire lives, but for some people, today is their whole life, and when we look at their whole lives, there are times when a single piece is their whole life.
But living has meaning in itself, whether you live a piece or a whole.
If water, which begins in a narrow stream, flows and flows to the sea, can only the vast ocean be called life? Aren't even a single raindrop falling from the sky, or a puddle in a mountain unknown to anyone, a fragment of life, life itself? Even a fleeting moment of life contains all of life within it.
Even though hardships and adversity surround our entire lives, there are also moments filled with excitement and joy, and every moment is life.
Even if it's so hard that you want to close your eyes for a moment, that can't be life.
So, even if life sometimes seems like acrobatics, even if life rushes toward you from afar, even if you step back from life for a moment, there is no need to be frustrated or hesitant.
Like the ocean that waves without stopping for a moment, life flows naturally with waves.
To become such a “captain who directly controls life” is perhaps the most beautiful oath we can take as we turn the last page of this book.
A book that uses the sea as a metaphor for the storms within us.
