Foucault almost finished writing "Confessions of the Flesh," which he had originally planned as the second volume of "History of Sexuality," in the fall of 1982.
However, the publication of this book will be put on hold for a while, and the second volume, 『The Use of Pleasure』, and the third volume, 『Self-Care』, which were not included in the original plan, will be completed in a hurry.
While he was working on supplementing and revising the manuscript of 『Confession of the Flesh』, his condition rapidly worsened and he died of sepsis on June 25, 1984.


In "Confessions of the Flesh," Foucault attempted to analyze from a fundamental perspective the influence of early Christian ethics of the 4th and 5th centuries on the lives, lifestyles, attitudes toward life, and formation of subjects of Westerners today.
He attached such great significance to this book that he said that the reason he planned 『History of Sex』 was to write 『Confessions of the Flesh』.
Foucault's critical awareness and brilliant insights into human nature and contemporary life found in this book will remain unchanged even as time passes.
