Kissing My Life
Description
Book Introduction
A steady seller in Korean youth literature
100,000 copies commemorative revised edition
A masterpiece that deals with the love, sex, and choices of wealthy teenagers.
Drawn with the hope that everyone will kiss their life
An all-too-realistic story about teenage performance struggles.
Since its publication in 2008, Lee Ok-su's full-length novel, "Kissing My Life," has established itself as a steady seller in Korean youth literature and is still loved by youth readers 17 years later. A revised edition has been published to commemorate the 100,000th copy sold.
This is the representative work of author Lee Ok-su, who actively continues to give lectures and meet with readers for middle and high school students across the country and communicates and breathes most closely with young people. It contains the story of Ha-yeon, an ordinary high school student, who becomes pregnant through a relationship with her boyfriend and becomes a single mother.
It realistically portrayed the struggles of adolescents and the issues of teenage single mothers, and it caused a great stir even at the time of its publication.
After its publication, the book was recommended by many organizations and institutions, including the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, the Arts Council Korea Literature Sharing Excellent Literature Book, the National Association of School Library Teachers, the National Reading New Wave Group, the School Library Journal, and the Children's Book Research Association, and its artistic value and significance were recognized.
The author, who wrote this article while visiting the home of a single mother, says that all young people in the world should acknowledge that they are sexual beings and that they should be able to naturally express their stories about sexuality in words.
So, I say we need to bring their sexuality into an honest discourse.
This revised edition, with a new, sensuous cover and refined presentation, still poses bold questions about the perceptions of love and sex experienced by young people.
Even as the number of teenagers experiencing sexual experiences at an increasingly younger age increases, this film sounds an alarm about the stagnant social awareness and sex education, and raises questions that must be confronted by bringing to the surface issues that cannot be resolved by simply keeping them taboo and hushed up.

Publisher's Review
◆ Between a mature body and an immature mind
A dizzying experience that anyone can experience
“What do I do in those moments when I can’t control my thoughts and I can’t control my body?
“I didn’t know there was so much of me inside me.”
This novel deals with the subject of teenage single mothers, presenting the story from the perspective that it is not a one-sided mistake, but something that can happen to anyone.
The story, told at a fast pace from the perspective and speaking style of the seventeen-year-old Ha-yeon, a first-person narrator, is vividly realistic.
The series of events leading up to pregnancy and birth of the baby from a relationship with a boyfriend are depicted in a tangible way.
The novel delicately captures the protagonist's psychology: from the confusion after discovering she is pregnant, to the conflict of wanting to get rid of the baby, to the dilemma of whether to raise the baby or give it up for adoption, to the desperate desire to go back to school.
If stories about single mothers usually deal with situations where they become pregnant due to unilateral coercion, such as sexual violence, this novel deals not with violence but with the secret desire within the mother to participate in the situation without even realizing it.
The author boldly expresses the curiosity and excitement that arises during teenage years, when one cannot control one's thoughts or control one's body, through Ha-yeon's mouth.
“Honestly, they are strongly attracted to each other like the S and N poles of a magnet...” he says, expressing the hesitation at that moment when he could easily cross an uncrossable boundary.
As we reach puberty, subtle changes in our feelings about sex occur.
On the one hand, we are troubled by the endless curiosity and desires that arise, and on the other hand, we are distressed by the reality that we have to suppress such sexual energy.
This novel demands that we now open the door and speak frankly and boldly about taboo areas that have previously been unspoken.
If we simply tolerate and assist, young people like Ha-yeon, who cannot find an adult to rely on and who are burdened with difficult problems, will continue to hide and hover around us.
“Maybe my stomach will swell up like a balloon and then burst at any moment and I’ll die.
“Who should I tell my secret to?”
◆ A glimpse into reality, made up of choices and responsibilities
Ha-yeon experiences the same dilemma of two choices that single teenage mothers face.
When you find out you are pregnant, the real question is whether to give birth or not, and if you do give birth, whether to raise the child or put it up for adoption.
“Yes, choice and giving up are two sides of the same coin.
Unless you have agreed in advance, there is no right answer no matter which way you turn it.
Get rid of the baby.
No, give birth and raise them.
But how can that be realistically possible? Where should I live… What is the best choice?
Through Ha-yeon's constant worrying until the moment of giving birth, we are reminded of the heavy responsibility that comes with relationships.
While illuminating a harsh truth about our lives, one made up of choices and responsibilities, this novel doesn't rashly declare either choice to be necessarily the right one.
Instead, it shows the protagonist making his own decisions at each moment of choice and maintaining healthy self-esteem.
As the title suggests, through Ha-yeon, the author leaves a lasting impression by conveying the message that no matter what others say, you are the master of your own life, and that no matter what difficulties you face, you must overcome the pain, be strong, and love your life.
