Meet Math at the Baseball Stadium

Baseball and math meet.
One world is filled with passionate passion, the other with cold reason, but the two worlds are connected by the common language of 'numbers'.
Hong Seok-man, a math teacher who created a sensation with his book "Baseball with Math," and Ryu Seon-gyu, former general manager of the SK Wyverns, meet to look at countless moments in baseball through the eyes of "mathematics."
Created by a working math teacher and a baseball expert, this book combines mathematical precision with the realism of the field.

This book is designed to be enjoyed by everyone from upper elementary school students to middle school students, and even general readers who enjoy math and baseball.
Mathematics, which may seem distant but is essential to our lives, and baseball, which is familiar but actually difficult.
This book is an attempt to break down those boundaries, and is the result of a sense of mission from a math teacher and a baseball expert.
If you like baseball, math will seem new to you, and if you find math difficult, you can get a step closer to math through baseball.

Into the book
Sabermetrics refers to a methodology for analyzing baseball statistically or mathematically.
By actively introducing game theory and statistical methodologies from social sciences into baseball, we supplement the shortcomings of existing baseball records and attempt a more academic and in-depth approach to the "essence of baseball," including the value of players.
--- p.33

There are 24 possible outcomes in a baseball game.
There are 3 outs and 8 runner situations (0 runners, 1st, 1st and 2nd, 1st and 3rd, 2nd, 2nd and 3rd, 3rd, bases loaded).
Expected runs is an indicator of how many runs are expected on average in a specific out/runner situation. It is calculated by dividing the total runs that occurred in that situation until the end of the inning by the total number of times that situation occurred.
For example, if a 1st and 2nd base situation occurred 100 times and a total of 120 runs were scored in those 100 instances, the expected score would be 1.2.

The average annual salary of LG Twins is 144.65 million won.
Looking at the top 5 salaries here, they are Park Dong-won with 1.2 billion won, Hong Chang-ki with 650 million won, Park Hae-min with 600 million won, Kim Hyun-soo with 500 million won, and Moon Bo-kyung with 410 million won.
Their combined annual salaries total 3.36 billion won, representing 44.67% of the team's total salary of 7.522 billion won. If we calculate the LG Twins players' salaries using the median rather than the arithmetic mean, the figure is not 144.65 million won, but approximately 60 million won.

Bill James once said, “If your stealing success rate is less than 70%, don’t try.”
The Book, which analyzed baseball records, analyzed a success rate of 72.7% as the break-even point for stolen bases.
Based on major league records from 1999 to 2002, the book found that a successful steal with a runner on first base earned an average of 0.175 more points, while a failed attempt cost 0.467 points.
Therefore, the break-even point based on the stolen base success rate was explained to be 72.7%.

For the 2024 season, the Lotte Giants sold 24 different types of uniforms on their official online shopping mall.
If you are a fan, you will have a lot of trouble making choices.
If you only have one choice and can't exchange your chosen uniform for another, which uniform would be the best choice? These moments of choice are common.
Which concession stand should I choose among the many? With five professional baseball stadiums in the Seoul metropolitan area, which should I go to? Which of the numerous seats should I choose for the best viewing experience? The answer to these questions can be found in "Optimal Stopping Theory."
--- p.359

On April 18, 2015, Samsung Lions manager Ryu Joong-il said, "Lee Dae-ho 9 vs.
I was asked which team I would choose among the '9 Lee Dae-hyung'.
He chose 'Lee Dae-hyung's 9 people' without hesitation.
The Lee Dae-ho 9 are the best at hitting, but they are a team that has difficulty executing strategies, and the Lee Dae-hyung 9 show incredible speed, but their long-distance hitting power is greatly lacking.
Lee Dae-ho is a typical home run hitter who lacks power, with 7 Gold Gloves, 5th in career home runs (374), 11 stolen bases, and 11 failed stolen bases.
Lee Dae-hyung is ranked 3rd in career stolen bases (505) and has 9 home runs. He is not a power hitter, but he is a hitter who tries to steal when he gets on base.
The striking styles were completely opposite, so it became a topic of debate among fans at the time.
