A miraculous journey for young people who cannot face the future.

'Summer of Eighteen' should be a time filled with more exciting and thrilling things than ever, but as we all know, the reality of Korean youth is not like that.
If you successfully complete the first semester final exams, then the next step is to continue your daily routine of going back and forth between school, academy, study room, and home, not much different from yesterday.
Eun-ho and Do-hee, the main characters in the novel, also endure each day with the thought that they must not fall behind rather than seriously thinking about the future.
But one day, just before summer vacation, a suspicious stalker appears in front of them, and cracks begin to appear in their smooth daily life.

After many twists and turns, the two realize that their stalker is the same person and begin to track down clues to uncover the stalker's identity and purpose.
And in the process, they learn about the accident at the beach 12 years ago that they don't remember and the person named 'Subin' who saved their lives.
The two protagonists, caught up in confusion, set out for the seaside village of Soso-ri, the starting point of all events, in hopes of calming their troubled minds and returning to their daily lives.

Meanwhile, Naeun, who ran away from her hometown after her childhood friend Subin's accident, has recently started having recurring strange dreams.
Naeun, who realizes that this dream, which unfolds with the Sosori Sea as the backdrop and the situation just before Subin's accident, is connected to the past, decides to use this dream to achieve the miracle she has been desperately hoping for.
But as the dream repeats, Naeun realizes that someone's sacrifice is unavoidable, and falls into a desperate dilemma.

A two-way journey towards it

Author Ahn Se-hwa, who has been loved for her novels with unexpected and unique settings and exciting plot developments, such as the sudden appearance of an older brother in front of the protagonist who grew up as an only child (『Birth of a Sibling』) and a family that develops superpowers and becomes spies (『Stardust Family』), has now released a fantastic time slip novel set in a seaside village.
As befitting a work by a writer who majored in screenwriting, this novel is charming with its detailed descriptions of situations, natural scene transitions, and thrilling plot development, creating the illusion of watching a movie.
Moreover, the chemistry created by the charming characters, from the cautious Eun-ho and the bulldozer-like action-oriented urban adventures to the heartbreaking story between the mysterious Na-eun and her best friend Soo-bin, is another fun element of this novel.

There are two types of ‘travel’ in the work.
One is the trip that Eun-ho and Do-hee take to Sosori, and the other is the time travel dream that Na-eun has.
The author gradually unravels the mysterious situation by changing the perspectives of Eun-ho and Do-hee's story to a third-person point of view and Na-eun's story to a first-person point of view.
As you follow along, you will find yourself piecing together the puzzle pieces of the story with interest.

If adolescence were to be likened to one of the four seasons, wouldn't summer, brimming with vitality and overflowing with energy, be a perfect fit? Yet, the youth around us are being told, "Just focus on your studies for now, and you'll deal with the rest when you're an adult," and are instead giving up today and walking through a dark passage.
Memento Mori (Remember Death).
Carpe Diem (Be true to the present moment).' Author Ahn Se-hwa says she wanted to tell young people who live busy lives chasing only a future they themselves are unsure of without time to reflect on themselves to cherish the present moment they are alive.
Furthermore, it conveys the weighty message that only those who faithfully care for and nurture their present lives can preserve their future.

Eun-ho and Do-hee finally face the truth they never knew before in Sosori, but which has made them who they are today, and have time to reflect on life while meeting Soo-bin's old friends and neighbors.
Naeun, who was trapped in a past stained with regret, learns to face reality and stay firmly grounded in the present through her dream journey.
I highly recommend this novel to young people who have forgotten their present selves due to their studies, as well as to readers who are losing sight of the precious present, crushed by the weight of reality. It reminds them of the preciousness of the moment and teaches them how to move forward into the future.
