Into the book

I'm sure there will be many times when you'll want to talk about your heart.
But sometimes I'm embarrassed to be honest, and sometimes I worry that no one will listen.
I don't really know my own mind, so I'm confused about what to say first.
At times like that, meet picture books.
Take a break from your busy academic schedule and delve into the world of picture books.
Picture books are always friends who comfort our hearts.

From the "Introductory Remarks"

What is a healthy self-identity? It's recognizing all aspects of myself, both positive and negative, without ignoring them, as "me."
To do that, it is important to express what I think of myself in my own words.
Just like the children who watched “The Strange House” talked about themselves in the ‘here and now.’
What I want, what makes me uncomfortable, my thoughts, my feelings… … I have to explore and become aware of myself one by one.

From "I Don't Know Myself Well"

How heavily must Abtin have been weighed down by his father's insistence that he and his family should have the same goals and rise to the same positions?
The size of my father, several times larger than Abtin, seems to show his weight.
But even so, Abtin does what he does best.
It is a good way to distinguish between your family's feelings and your own.
In other words, self-individualization has been achieved well.
I believed that Eunseo could do that too.
Through ten sessions, Eunseo explored and understood herself.
By focusing on my own mind, I gained the inner strength to not give up and try to persuade my family even in uncomfortable situations where their opinions differed.
The fingertips that were always torn and messed up were now healed.

There is a saying that 'depression is a cold of the mind'.
It means that anyone can catch it, like a cold.
Just as you would seek treatment for a cold, it is natural to seek treatment for depression.
No matter how depressing the moment may be, there are things you must never let go of.
It is hope.
"On a Dark Winter Night" is said to be an autobiographical story about author Flora McDonnell's own experience with depression.
Isn't this picture book itself, born after a deep, deep winter night of depression, a testament to hope?

From "Am I Depressed?"

If Mr. Bear had said he wanted some time alone, the Rabbit family would have understood.
But the reason why Mr. Bear can't say that and keeps struggling and putting in unnecessary effort is because he thinks, 'I am the kindest bear in the world.'
It's natural to want people around you to see you as a good person.
Who wouldn't want to do that?
But that doesn't mean I have to break down my psychological boundaries to conform to others.
It is just as important to be good to yourself as it is to be good to others.

From "My friends keep crossing the line"

Your parents are your 'safe zone'.
A safe zone is a place to take refuge in the event of a disaster or a place to park your car in an emergency situation on the road. In psychology, a safe zone is an environment or area where you can feel at ease.
Whether I'm taking on new challenges, experiencing failure and frustration, or even feeling like I'm not good enough, my parents are always there for me and support me.
In "We Always Meet Again," the mother tells her child, "Come back whenever you want to rest after flying."
It is a phrase that tells you where your parents are as a safe zone.

Publisher's Review
Feeling depressed, relationships with friends, nagging parents, choosing a career path… …
Picture books answer various adolescent concerns!

Puberty is a transitional period from childhood to adulthood.
It's like crossing a stepping stone bridge surrounded by thick fog.
Moreover, our youth are going through an even more difficult adolescence due to the added burden of academics.

"Picture Book, Please Take Care of the Adolescent Heart" is a book that comforts the anxious and confused hearts of teenagers through picture books.
The author, counselor Nam Ki-sook, has met many young people in schools and youth organizations and listened to their voices.
In this book, the author vividly introduces the various concerns of teenagers and selects picture books that are just right for them.
And it conveys the message of empathy and hope contained in these picture books.

Through a personalized picture book prescription for adolescence, this book guides teenagers to explore their inner selves and strengthen their minds.
It also helps adults who care for or teach young people to understand their children's minds more deeply.

Counselor Nam Ki-sook, known as the ‘magnifying glass teacher’, has been working with teenagers for a long time.
Warm comfort and affectionate advice delivered with picture books.

Recently, picture books have overcome the stereotype that they are a genre only for children and are loved by adults as well.
Because pictures and words come together to implicitly express our thoughts, feelings, and concerns.

As a professional counselor and picture book therapist who has extensively used picture books to open people's hearts, the author says that picture books are essential for teenagers as well.
Picture books can be especially helpful during adolescence, when children are confused about how to define and express their feelings.

The author selects 26 representative adolescent concerns frequently encountered in the counseling room and shares the stories of adolescents he has actually met.
Then, we open picture books that deal with topics related to those concerns and provide kind advice so that the youth can find answers to their concerns on their own through the stories of the characters in the picture books.
Finally, it provides a post-reading activity with questions that allow you to look into your own mind.

The author has the nickname 'Magnifying Glass Teacher'.
This is a nickname I earned because I always observed and treated each and every person who visited the counseling room with great care.
This book is filled with the warm comfort and caring advice that only a sincere and dedicated counselor can offer to young people.

“Picture books are always on your side!”
26 picture books that will become kind and deep friends for teenagers.

This book is divided into four parts.
Part 1, “Time to Talk to Myself,” contains picture books that help teenagers going through puberty explore themselves, and Part 2, “Time for My Heart to Grow,” contains picture books that illuminate the unstable minds of adolescence.
And Part 3, “Time to Share Your Heart with Others,” contains picture books that make you think about your relationships with friends and parents, and Part 4, “Time to Support Myself,” contains picture books that encourage and support young people preparing for the future.
At the end of each chapter, there are questions that allow for in-depth post-reading activities related to the picture book.

By reading this book, young people begin by looking into themselves, accepting their anxious and confused feelings, understanding the meaning of relationships with others, and then taking a step forward in self-discipline.
In doing so, you will gain the strength and courage to cross the tightrope of adolescence at your own pace.
