The birth of a new writer who will breathe fresh air into our youth literature.
Hwang Bo-na's "Name Sticker" won the grand prize at the 14th Munhakdongne Youth Literature Award.

This year's Munhakdongne Youth Literature Award winners, following Kim Soo-bin's "Quiet Coincidence," which depicts the small but sparkling power of the most ordinary people; Moon Kyung-min's "Hulhul," which depicts the process in which the protagonist, who declared a break with the past and dreamed of independence, gradually begins to dream of tomorrow; and Hwang Young-mi's "Cherry Shrimp: It's a Secret," which was loved by 330,000 readers as a story that evoked empathy from those of us tired of the fatigue of relationships, have been published.
"Name Sticker" is a story about middle school students Eunseo and Mingu, who face each other's shortcomings and live through difficult days with a good heart.

Author Hwangbo Na meets young readers for the first time with a narrative that seems to progress at a light pace but suddenly delivers a poignant feeling, a cast of characters with exquisite charm, and delicate and witty sentences.
This work features various settings that reflect our society's attitude toward differences and minorities, such as diverse family structures, gender stereotypes, and prejudiced views on occupations that deviate from what is considered normal, but the virtue of this work is that it does not simply display or consume these, but rather deals with them naturally and ordinarily within the story.
“The ethical perspective of this work is outstanding.
“This is because of the author’s honest attitude of respecting not only the readers of the novel but also the youth as the main characters of the work,” said critic Song Su-yeon, heralding the birth of a trustworthy author.

Into the book
“I ask why you use that strange power for me.”
First of all, I was not happy with Min-gu's strange ability, but I was even more uncomfortable with the idea of using it for me.
“Because…….”
As if a drop of red ink had fallen into the water in the chalet, Min-gu's face slowly turned bright red, and then his entire body turned red.
I was for no reason afraid of what would come out of Min-gu's mouth next.
“Because I like you.”
It's the worst.
I'm receiving Kang Min-gu's confession.
--- p.14

What was my given name?
I was curious but didn't ask.
Because I was afraid that such a question would be interpreted as my jealousy towards Ruby.
That interpretation was sure to make Ruby's mom and dad sad.
He would take better care of me and be more concerned about me.
I didn't want to create that situation.
In that case, it would have been better to suppress my curiosity.
--- p.26

Min-gu went into the room and came out with a name sticker and a pen.
“Write your name here.”
I bit my lips hard, as if I was about to burst into tears.
I wrote the name of my mother who gave birth to me in a small square blank space with a red border.
And the name of the child I like too.
My hands were shaking, so the letters ended up shaking.
--- p.62

“Eunseo, why don’t you care about me?”
Uncle Myeongdu asked as he removed the plastic wrap from my bowl.
I didn't immediately realize what Uncle Myeongdu was saying.
After a brief silence, I realized that he was talking about the uncle I met on a rainy day.
“Why should I do that?”
I asked back, but Uncle Myeongdu didn't answer.

--- p.89

“Oh, wait a minute, Eunseo.”
“Why? Did you leave something in the car?”
"no."
"sure?"
“Go Eun-seo, come to your senses!”
It was a back smash that made my legs wobbly.
It really hurt and brought tears to my eyes.
I hugged Ruby's mom tightly.
Ruby's mom hugged me.
A spark that I thought I had never had started to crackle and burn pleasantly inside my heart.

Publisher's Review
“So, if I write my name on this sticker, stick it on a flower pot, and make a wish, it will come true?”
_The strange ability of Min-gu, who can neither believe nor disbelieve

One day, middle school student Eunseo hears a strange story from Kang Mingu, whom she is not very close with.
The reason Lee Jae-wook can't sleep these days and the reason Yang Do-hoon's grades, who used to be good at studying, are all because of him.
How should I take Min-gu's unexpected confession that if you write your name on a small name sticker, stick it on a flower pot, and make a wish, it will come true? And now, he wants to use that power for you.
Min-gu is a child who keeps making people say the same thing twice and doesn't look people in the eye when he talks, but when you see him taking good care of his grandmother when she comes home from the daycare center, you can tell that he's a kind child.
Even Uncle Myeong-du, who had taken a liking to Eun-seo with the words, “Min-gu is a strange guy, but there’s no way she could be his girlfriend, and she doesn’t seem like a friend either,” ended up sitting around the table with Eun-seo and eating ice cream together, but Eun-seo doesn’t feel like she’s being included in something she shouldn’t be.
Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if we got to know Min-gu a little more.

Anxiety, jealousy, love, resentment,
What Eunseo, who was wavering in the midst of a whirlwind of emotions, caught

From now on, my mother left, saying that we should all live well as if she never existed; Hye-ju, who always cares about everything about her but doesn't seem to care about me; Ruby, who spends her days in the classroom without friends and her one-year-old sister who is her only friend; Ruby's mother, who knows that she takes care of me sincerely but whose warmth is still awkward.
What Eunseo learns in the midst of her demanding daily life is the art of observing others without them knowing, the art of suppressing curious questions, the hatred she feels for herself for calculating things at every moment, and the dark desire to see those who treat her carelessly hurt.
After Min-gu impulsively writes two names on the blank name sticker he hands her and hands it to her, the whirlwind of emotions swirling through Eun-seo's heart grows stronger.
Meanwhile, new relationships begin to enter Eunseo's world little by little.
Uncle Myeongdu, who has long eyelashes, comforts Eunseo with extraordinary care, and Grandma Soseuldeok, who wants to fit in everywhere like a child, uses her cuteness as a weapon to make Eunseo smile.
When he has something to say, he often touches the doll hanging from Eunseo's bag first, but sometimes Mingu is surprisingly straightforward and soon finds himself looking into Eunseo's eyes for a long time.
Ruby's mother's words, "I hope Eunseo doesn't have a hard time," are finally beginning to burn warmly in Eunseo's heart.

“So, after I got to know you, Eunseo,
“It gave me hope that maybe I wasn’t a good person.”
_Living through the bad days with a good heart

Eunseo wrote two names with trembling hands, but Mingu couldn't ask for anything because Eunseo's face wasn't bright when she handed them over.
This makes the two children reflect on the power of the heart and realize that the way to break free from the hatred that has weighed heavily on them is to use that power to rise up.
And then he saves himself powerfully from a dead end.
This novel unfolds at a brisk pace, centered around lively dialogue and episodes, and by the end, it leaves us defenseless with a vivid impression.
This work speaks thoughtfully about how what is needed to live through difficult times with a good heart is not special and rare resources, but a strange love that embraces strange beings with a strange power.

“It is natural for the mind to not do what it wants,
If you feel uneasy, it might be a good idea to stop for a moment.” _From the author’s note
