Book Introduction
'Young writers who will become the future of Korean literature' chosen by readers,
A heart-fluttering story by Lee Kkot, the best page-turner in youth literature.
“This novel is my favorite story I’ve ever written.”

Author Lee Kkot-nim, the best page-turner in youth literature, made 200,000 readers cry and 100,000 laugh with "I'll Cross the World to Go to You" and "The Child I Want to Kill."
He has made every work he publishes a bestseller with his unique, direct style that confronts the things that teenagers must know and the things that are not easily said, and has created the phrase "the flower you can trust and watch." This time, he has come to readers with a heart-fluttering first love story.
This novel, written with so much affection that the author himself declared it "my favorite story of all the ones I've written," is the story of two children, each with a painful family history, who meet each other by chance in the summer of seventeen, and gradually open their tightly closed hearts as they move forward together in their lives.

It all started with a strong attraction to each other on an endlessly hot summer day.
That kid, strangely enough, I keep thinking about him and strangely enough, I keep worrying about him.
To Hajio, Yuchan is named 'that kid', and to Yuchan, Hajio is named 'that kid' and takes a firm place in his heart.
As they learn about the child's pain and, for the first time in their lives, a desire to protect him sprouts, the two children face their own stories for the first time, stories they had been reluctant to share.
What I realized through the voices of the neighbors who have unknowingly witnessed the pain of two children is that if you choose one, you may lose the other.
Still, we have to make some choices.
That even if that choice causes pain, we can choose an attitude other than hatred or cynicism.
That's when my world really starts to change.
Hajio and Yuchan, holding onto a shred of hope that they might be able to reconcile with their lives, finally transform this summer, which they had expected to be hot and painful, into the 'most splendid and overwhelming' summer for the two of them.

Into the book
I grab Geo's bag and say.
Instead of saying, "Don't go away,"
“Let’s go together.”
Said.
(Yoochan)
--- p.39

I'm reminded again of how incredibly peaceful it is to be in these ordinary moments, not having to fear what might happen or having to listen to what others don't want to hear.
"Then what is it? Why do you want me to stay by your side?"
This is the first time.
I wanted to say everything.
Somehow, I feel like I can be honest in front of this kid.
“I hear sounds that no one else can hear.”
"what?"
“I can hear what other people are thinking, their inner thoughts.” (Yoo Chan)
--- p.46

Instead of asking if I'm okay, I just sit with them.
Just as I once did, I wish someone else would do the same.
(Yoochan)
--- p.58

Sometimes I wonder.
If the people gathered at the village hall that day hadn't felt sorry for Saebyeol, if they had judged right from wrong for the sake of the dead and the survivors, then I too would have been able to forgive my brother and support him wholeheartedly.
(Yoochan)
--- p.125

The raindrops falling to the ground and bouncing, the green leaves swaying with moisture, the umbrella tilted towards this child, the loud sound of the rain falling, are engraved one by one like a scene in a photograph, and even the dark clouds that brought the rain become bright.
Do it, this child brings me peace even on rainy and gloomy days.
(Yoochan)
--- p.137

“Chan-i is afraid that he might lose something precious to Ji-han again.
But I think it's good to have at least one precious thing, even if it gets lost or stolen.
It would be sad to lose something, but precious things are bound to come back again.
“Is there really only one thing that is precious in life?” (Hajio)
--- p.148

“Just as the whole village protected you that day, I will protect you now.
“I wanted to say this.” (Yoo Chan)
--- p.158

Maybe God sent me that child to apologize for making a mistake.
If that's the case, I think I might be able to forgive God.
(Yoochan)
--- p.159

I put my hand on Yuchan's chest and held it as if I was holding a round ball.
And he pretended to take a bite as if it were an apple.
"what are you doing?"
“Can’t you see? I just ate your summer.”
"what?"
“I ate that mean, hot summer that keeps tormenting you in your chest.
It won't be hot anymore.
It won't be painful or bothersome.
“Just wait and see.” (Hajio)
--- p.186

Publisher's Review
Yuchan, a boy who can hear other people's inner thoughts even when they don't want to hear them
Hajio, a child who believes he should not have been born
'This is the first time.
Somehow, I feel like I can be honest with this kid.'

The story is set in a fictional village called 'Beonyeong-eup, Jeongju-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do' and is told alternately from the perspectives of two children.
Yuchan, a boy a little different from others, loses his parents in a fire of unknown cause and ends up hearing other people's inner thoughts at the funeral.
From that day on, I was tormented by other people's inner thoughts that I didn't want to hear, so I covered my ears with earphones and focused on studying.
However, he experiences a sense of calm whenever he is near Hajio, who happened to transfer to the same neighborhood.
At first, it was just simple curiosity and a small hope.
He seeks out Hajio in the hopes of escaping the terrible noise, but as time goes by, he realizes that's not the only reason.
When I see Hajio, whose true feelings are clearly revealed on his face, I sometimes chuckle, and sometimes I get angry when I see him worrying about someone other than himself.
The colorful emotions I'm feeling after such a long time feel a little unfamiliar.

Hajio, who transferred from Seoul to Beonyeong.
Hajio, who has lived with his mother his entire life, is a child with a special affection for his mother, to the point that he started judo with the sole intention of protecting her. However, due to his mother's illness, he is forced to go find his father, whom he never knew existed.
I came here to live in prosperity, as if I was being pushed around by my father, but almost all the shops close at eight o'clock, greetings from outsiders are not well-received, and the only things listed on Carrot Market are cultivators and engine sprayers. Every day here is miserable.
The person called Dad, the woman living with Dad, the townspeople, the Judo club that has no system whatsoever, and the kid named Yuchan that I met at the train station are all uncomfortable.
While the future looks bleak, this child, Yuchan, keeps coming to mind.
This kid who says he's a poisoner seems to be asking me to save him.

“In this small town, great things always happen in the judo club.”
A place where even the loneliest children are no longer lonely, prosperity

The somewhat rough-looking prosperous people are particularly fond of sports, especially judo.
For prosperous people, guidance is a dream and a pride.
There are kids here who do judo for some dubious reason, or for reasons so desperate they'd risk their lives.
Yuju, a sticky, max-level student who shouts 'Judo Club High Pass' and is always slacking off and getting hurt.
Saebyeol, a promising member of the Beonyeong High School Judo Club and the sole guardian of her younger siblings, is directly involved in Yuchan's tragedy.
These judo members change the atmosphere just by appearing, making us focus more and more on one event.
About the secrets that the people of prosperity have been keeping hidden in relation to the fire incident exactly five years ago.

The stories of the village elders, including Geo's father, Detective Nam, who has worked as a police officer for a long time in prosperity, the judo coach whose true identity is questionable, and Yu-chan's grandmother who lost her child in a fire and has been caring for her grandchild, are all told from the perspectives of Hajio and Yu-chan, providing an important opportunity for the children to face and overcome their own pain.
The process in which Hajio, who is accustomed to city life and whose relationship with his mother was everything, and Yuchan, who had closed his heart after a tragedy, meet in this small town and begin to move towards each other and the world little by little brightens the hearts of those who watch.
Neighborhood residents who seem warmhearted despite their outward appearances, children running their own races, the dazzling sparkle of the stream that shines every summer, the boundless green ginkgo trees, the never-ending sound of cicadas… … The prosperous summer depicted by author Lee Kkot-nim also stimulates nostalgia for the community and space that I may have forgotten and unknowingly helped me grow.

From hot summer to refreshing summer
A new season written because of first love

This is a big deal.
Now, even the sound of cicadas is not enough, and just seeing the sun will remind me of this moment.
I just felt like I knew.
That this moment with this child would be the most splendid and exciting summer I've ever experienced.
The unusually hot summer continued, making me miss you every time I saw you.
(Page 187)

The swirling emotions of seventeen, the thrill of first love, and the children's shortcomings and wounds that stand out under the intense sunlight reach their peak as they meet the season of summer.
This story shows how intense the journey through a season can be, and how some fateful encounters can completely rewrite not just a season, but a whole life.
After spending Hajio and Yuchan's seventeenth summer together, you'll want to talk about the mystery and charm of this season.
