Into the book
I liked the fact that I kept swimming with the sole purpose of growing up healthy.
I had a fun childhood in the water, participating in various competitions and winning prizes.
However, as I entered senior year, my swimming scores did not improve.
At twelve, I was hit hard by the direct hit of puberty, and before I could even build up a defense against the shock, I was shaken by the first disappointment in my dream.
My goal of perhaps becoming a successful swimmer was dashed.
It was fun… … .
Is it time to get out of the water now?
I was afraid of dreaming in a world outside the water.
Coming out of the water was equated with giving up on myself.
He was constantly kicking his butt at the local swimming pool without anyone telling him to.
Even now, I'm not sure if it was a miracle or luck that I met Coach Kijae at the swimming pool.
It was an obvious temptation.
Moreover, I was amazed at the fact that I didn't have to get out of the water.
“I give you kimbap.
“How about it? Want to jump together?”
“Kimbap…is that it?”
--- p.33
“When my grandfather told me that we too live courageous lives, I was moved to tears.”
I never dreamed that Grandpa Ki-chang would be such a eloquent speaker.
Naeun Kang, who was listening to the story of the Battle of Nakdong River, applauded Grandfather Gi-chang, saying that he was envious of his courage and that he was amazing.
I pretended not to hear and hung on the parallel bars, doing a handstand, but I also got goosebumps all over my body when I thought back to my grandfather Ki-chang's younger days when he would risk his life in battle.
I can't even imagine what it would be like to face war, but wouldn't it feel like the world had been turned upside down?
It was a courage I couldn't even imagine.
But Grandpa Ki-chang just smiled curiously as if it was nothing.
“It’s nothing special.
We are all courageous.
Living is something that requires courage.
Just as each of us has a different appearance, each of us has a courage that suits us.”
--- p.97
“Park Pungdeung! Fighting!”
A teasing nickname and a fighting spirit full of strength.
The six-syllable cheering message was contradictory, but it was still good because the moment I heard it, my heart fluttered like cream, a smile spread across my face, and I felt strength in my lower abdomen once again.
But it wasn't Kwon Jae-hoon.
“You always supported me.
You weren't like this."
The corner of the guy's mouth curved.
Unlike the curved lips, the eyes were cold and frozen.
The cold eyes gave me goosebumps.
I was so confused that I couldn't tell if this was the Kwon Jae-hoon I knew.
“That is, when you are no longer my competition.
“Right now, being treated as an equal to you… … feels so dirty.”
--- p.125
“This isn’t right.
If you're a coach, shouldn't you at least ask if it's okay? It's because of me that Jaehoon ended up like that...
“Coach, do you have anything to say?”
The reggae man placed some mung bean pancakes and boiled pork in front of us.
The rich smell of oil surrounded us.
Coach Kijae tore the mung bean pancakes into bite-sized pieces that were easy to eat with chopsticks.
“You’re not okay right now.
But would it be any comfort if I asked if you were okay?”
There was not a single word wrong.
My head fell to the floor at the bone-chilling truth.
The courage to raise my head and face it gradually disappeared.
“There is nothing to eat on the ground, so raise your head.
Jaehoon is an accident.
“Accidents that should not occur while diving.”
--- p.161
“Kwon Jae-hoon.”
It was a name I always called, but at this moment, I called it with such tension that my soul trembled.
There were just the two of us, ten meters above the ground.
Standing shoulder to shoulder at the end of the diving board, the guy answered.
"why?"
When I retire as a diver someday, I will accept it calmly, and I will definitely tell Kwon Jae-hoon, who I spent my time with on the diving board, something I brought out from deep within me.
“What I want to see is not a medal, but your strong will.”

Publisher's Review
Fall ten thousand times to climb one step
The Fierce Struggles of Promising Divers
The height of 10 meters is said to be the greatest fear for humans.
What would it be like to be forced to climb to a high place and jump back down every day? "Ten Thousand Divers" tells the story of divers whose unique destiny requires constant falling to grow.
Moo-won, who is called 'Park Pung-deung' instead of his normal name every time he trains.
He was once a swimmer, but he changed his sport to diving after falling for the strange persuasion of his coach.
“Since you started late, you have to run at least 150 times a day.” Coach Kijae said this half-jokingly and half-seriously, and Muwon started practicing desperately, but since he didn’t start early like his colleagues, he was not sure if he was doing well.
Ahead of the national team trials, Coach Kijae gives us a new assignment, but something feels strange.
They asked Muwon, whose main event is the 3-meter dash, to run the 10-meter dash.
In addition, out of the blue, he is given the mission to do synchronized diving with the self-proclaimed ace Kwon Jae-hoon.
Can two people standing side by side on a 10-meter platform beautifully throw themselves into the blue water?
Our acting, which is perfected through training, is not the result of simple effort alone, but rather of blood, sweat, and tears.
It was fighting spirit.
It was a precious life built up from countless todays, and it was a belief that tomorrow would definitely be better than today.

Author Lee Song-hyeon, author of "Ten Thousand Divings," began his career by winning the Ma Hae-song Literary Award and has since achieved unparalleled success by winning numerous awards, including the Four Seasons Literary Award, the Chosun Ilbo New Year's Literary Contest, and the Seorabeol Literary Award.
When he won the Four Seasons Literary Award, he was unanimously awarded the prize with the comment that "his unique, sophisticated sense of humor, stable writing style, and excellent psychological portrayal of the characters stand out." He has consistently published works dealing with sports, making good use of these strengths.
Following falconry, slackline, and archery, the chosen subject of diving simultaneously embodies the contrasting keywords of 'fall and growth,' further highlighting the author's exceptional eye for selecting materials.
"Ten Thousand Divings," which embodies both his literary achievements and his unique individuality, is a work worthy of standing tall as author Lee Song-hyeon's new masterpiece.
“I have never been without fear
“I’ve never done it because I was afraid.”
Everyone experiences a slump as they live.
Slumps happen to everyone, though the timing and degree may vary.
Some people overcome it wisely, while others struggle with it for a long time.
Slumps are especially common for inexperienced teenagers, who find themselves struggling to improve their grades no matter how hard they study, or face difficult problems that leave them feeling frustrated.
How can I get out of this slump and get back to being healthy again?
In "Ten Thousand Divings," characters appear, each going through a slump.
The protagonist, Muwon, experiences frustration for the first time in his life as he enters puberty.
As swimming, which started for health reasons, became a career path, I began to feel pressured to achieve good grades.
After that, he changed his sport to diving and worked hard, but as expected, his scores did not improve easily.
The same goes for Moo-won's friends who are worried about their grades.
Jae-hoon, the ace diver and Eun-kang, the promising diver, are considered the best in the diving club, but they also struggle with similar yet different problems.
Jae-hoon feels pressured by his continued mistakes and Moo-won's sneaky rise in momentum, and Eun-gang, frustrated by her skills not being what they used to be, skips training without permission and struggles in a slump.
They are slowly getting out of their slump in their own way, and there is nothing special about their method.
Just keep doing what you're given and what you have to do, and wait for this moment to end.
Seventeen unfinished people who leap ten thousand times toward their dreams. If their courageous rise and fall isn't perfect, what in the world can be called perfect?
_From the author's note
If we look closely at the various forms of slump that appear in the novel, we can see that the protagonist Muwon's slump lasts the longest.
Even though he was teased for being a 'slipper' while diving after giving up swimming, he didn't care and kept going. The story is much more lighthearted and pure because it involves a healthy process of thinking about how to grow rather than looking for help from others or some special method.
This is probably why, among countless coming-of-age novels, Ten Thousand Divings stands out.
