Dance on the trash mountain!
Description
Book Introduction
Environmental influencer Hong Da-kyung and her friends
The fun 'Trash Mountain OUT' project!
“Earth, we will protect you, you beautiful one!”

The second book in the Grass Light Youth Series [Algo Teens], "Dance on the Trash Mountain!" has been published.
This book is an environmental essay about environmental influencer Hong Da-kyung and her friends who are 'properly loving the Earth' with their unique ideas while shouting "Out with the trash mountain."
The author of this book, Hong Da-kyung, was selected by Vogue as one of the '24 people leading the tectonic shift of the times', and the environmental club Jijibae (a learning center that protects the Earth), led by the author, received the 'Seoul Metropolitan Government Environmental Award' for excellence.
He is a passionate young environmental activist who has also given TED talks and trained Samsung employees.

While previous environmental books for teenagers have either fostered fear, instilled guilt, or attempted to indoctrinate, "Dance on the Trash Mountain!" encourages teenagers to join in the "stylish environmental movement" with unique and vibrant ideas.
The environmental movements actually carried out by the author in the book are a little different from previous methods.
It's new, fun, unique and engaging enough to make you want to join right away.
So, when I read about the episodes of making a music video about a mountain of trash with only 2 million won in assets, the dance challenge, the trash picking Olympics, Swimpick, the Leswaist diet, magnet fishing, etc., I am surprised by their absurdity, but at the same time, I am also surprised by their expertise because they were all learned with sincerity and put into practice properly.
This is a truly remarkable book that will spark new interest and change in the increasingly serious global environmental problems.
It's great for use in environmental education classes and special activities at school, and it's also incredibly useful at home for parents and children to discuss environmental issues together.

Into the book
You can be a good trash fan if you know the right information.
I can create a 'sustainable Earth' by sharing the correct information I know with readers and having many people spread and practice it.
Among the things we see around us, the most serious type of litter is cigarette butts.
Small peppers are spicy and small peppercorns are scary.
As you walk down the street, you will see lattice-shaped iron mesh drain holes, or rain gutters, here and there.
When it rains, the water that collects on the streets flows into the river and then the sea through the drains. However, when the rain gutters, which should normally be empty, become filled with cigarette butts, the water that collects on the streets cannot drain away, and the surrounding area becomes a sea of water.
Throwing a cigarette butt down a drain might seem like a relief at the moment, but if the drain gets clogged during the rainy season and floods the streets, even non-smokers will suffer the consequences.
Everyone gets hurt.

---「The Basics of Trash Fandom」

After driving for about an hour from Daegu, I arrived at Saengsong-ri, Danmil-myeon, Uiseong-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do.
The gloomy and eerie atmosphere was palpable even from afar, and the closer I got to the mountain of trash that the navigation system had pointed out, the more I couldn't believe it even though I was seeing it with my own eyes.
It was as if a huge monster was standing there.
I was skeptical, but as reported, a mountain of 200,000 tons of garbage was piled up as high as an 8-story apartment building.
I couldn't understand if this was really Korea and how it had gotten to this point.
I wondered how people could think of piling up trash so high, and why the local residents just watched without reporting it.
I went hiking, which wasn't really hiking, because I was wondering if there was trash dumped on the mountain that was originally there.
But it wasn't just trash piling up on the mountain, everything was trash.

---"200,000-ton mountain of trash"

After seeing the mountain of trash in Uiseong, I thought about what I could do.
If there was an eight-story-high pile of trash in front of my house, anyone would immediately take action.
We will file countless complaints with the district office and even hold protests to get it cleaned up quickly.
Because no one likes messy things.
As a young man in my twenties, I thought that what I could do was to speak out and let people know so that we could solve the problem together.
Suddenly, an idea flashed through my mind.
That was to create a music video with a mountain of trash as the background.

---"Investing 2 million won of my entire fortune in a music video"

Luckily, that fantasy actually came true.
I was selected as one of the '24 people leading the tectonic shift of the times' by Vogue Korea in the environmental field.
I was a little surprised that my story was published in Vogue, a famous fashion magazine.
Currently, clothing waste around the world is polluting the Earth's environment more seriously than we can imagine, and this situation seemed to be taken into consideration when selecting the magazine's topic.
While taking the photos for this interview article, there was something I desperately wanted.
I hope that even just one person will read a fashion magazine article and take an interest in the waste problem.

Publisher's Review
Before I knew it, I had become an 'environmental influencer'!
Today, I'm enjoying Earth with my unique and chubby ideas!

How does "interest" in environmental issues begin? For some, it's a trip to the beach for a relaxing getaway and seeing plastic bottles washed ashore by the white waves. For others, it's a leisurely stroll through the park and a rolling takeout cup. For others, it's a news story about cigarette butts clogging gutters and exacerbating flood damage. For others, it's a book or documentary about environmental issues. Interest often arises from direct or indirect experiences with environmental issues.

Author Hong Da-kyung began to take an interest in the issue of waste when she was in high school, after seeing perfectly good smile potatoes being thrown away as leftovers.
From then on, I traveled around to recycling companies across the country to truly understand how serious the waste problem was, and after climbing the mountain of trash in Uiseong, I traveled around mountains of trash across the country to understand the severity of the problem, and I made a music video because I wanted to solve the problem.
The question that began with, "How can we solve this mountain of garbage problem, and more broadly, this global environmental problem?" led to the practice of, "If we pick up trash, don't use plastic, and recycle properly, we can solve it."
But at the same time, I also thought, 'Will things change if I do it alone?'
Still, the author had one conviction in his heart.
“There are limits to the role of an individual, but if each individual’s small, precious actions come together, they will definitely create change!”

Environmental movement starts with small things, for myself and for the Earth.
If you look around, you will see that there are many people who are doing environmental work with good intentions.
Mothers who meticulously separate their trash, fathers who use public transportation, office workers who carry tumblers, children who sort their trash into recycling bins with their bare hands…
Everyone who believes in protecting the Earth is practicing environmental activism in their own way.
If one or two of them, and perhaps even more interested people, share information and take action, change will happen, hope will be seen, and the Earth will be a cleaner place than it is today.
_ From the prologue

Let's join the stylish environmental movement~
As much as you know, properly! Fun and new!

Young environmental activist Hong Da-kyung decided to create a 'Learning Center for Protecting the Earth (Jijibae)' to protect our beautiful planet and to teach people how to love the Earth in a more fun way.
So, we planned an activity that everyone would want to participate in and put it into action right away.
The behind-the-scenes story of how all that content was created is delightfully captured in "Dance on the Trash Mountain!"

The honest and candid sentences, which are like reading a teenager's diary, the photos that convey the realism of the scene, and the cute illustrations that seem to have copied the story as they are, add to the pleasure of reading.
The various activities (actions) introduced in the book, such as plogging, SNS challenges, zero-waste parties, and clean hiking, fit very well with the 'teen culture' and are more attractive because they can be continued in life rather than being a one-time thing.
If you feel it's difficult to start an activity for the Earth on your own, there are also ways to join an environmental club like Jijibae, so please refer to them.
You will be able to experience the miracle that occurs when small but precious hearts come together.

The [Know Your Teens] series by Fullbit will continue to publish books containing knowledge in various fields such as humanities, society, science, economics, and environment that teenagers need.
