Into the book
“The Buddha’s teachings lead us away from ignorance and into a world free from suffering.
So, practitioners recite the Heart Sutra every day so as not to miss even a single day of its teachings.

However, as I kept repeating it without understanding its meaning, I gradually forgot its content and it became simply one of the ritual procedures of the Buddhist ceremony.
We should always keep the teachings of the Heart Sutra in our hearts and apply them whenever suffering arises in our lives to identify its causes and find ways to escape from it.
"
--- From the text

“Money cannot completely solve people’s suffering.
It's like a painkiller given to someone in severe pain.
The complete solution requires gaining enlightenment from foolishness.
So we practice diligently according to the Buddha's teachings.
“If you are suffering through a hellish and painful life, and you encounter the Buddha’s teachings and experience freedom from suffering even just once, that is a miracle.”
--- From the text

“If I truly understand and accept him, not because of my desires, my suffering will disappear.
If you benefit sentient beings by doing altruistic actions, the pursuit of enlightenment will come naturally.
Sanggubori and Hahwajungsaeng, these two are not separate.
“Hinayana achieves enlightenment through self-interest and helps all living beings, while Mahayana advances to the path of Buddhahood through altruism, saving all living beings. In reality, these two paths are not separate, but are always achieved together in our lives.”
--- From the text

“Our mind is a cycle of birth, existence, change, and destruction.
Even if one's mind arises, it changes and disappears in an instant, and another mind suddenly appears.
It keeps rising and falling like boiling rice.
If you observe these mental processes closely, you can easily see their impermanence.”
--- From the text

“This law of dependent origination that the Buddha realized does not remain limited to the law of the mind, but equally permeates the material world and the world of life.
The law of impermanence and non-self, the law of dependent origination, applies to all beings.
Everything changes.
“Whether in the material world, the world of life, the spiritual world, the universe, the body, or the mind, nothing is unchanging.”
--- From the text

“Just as shapeless water takes on a shape according to its container, our existence is determined by our circumstances, time, and place.
There is no entity called 'I' that exists and performs various roles. Rather, my appearance is revealed in various forms depending on fate.

Yet, we are so obsessed with the roles of wife, child, and passenger that we give them meaning, deluding ourselves into thinking that we are those roles.
That's where all the suffering comes from.
There is no fixed entity of me, no entity of the soul, no fixed entity of Atman (self).
This is the meaning of anatta.”
--- From the text

Buddha's teachings on how to escape suffering

The Heart Sutra, a representative Buddhist scripture, is a short text of only 260 characters, but it contains all of the central ideas of Buddhism.
So, it is a sutra that all Buddhist believers love and recite in most Buddhist ceremonies.
Many readers have read the book 『Story of the Heart Sutra』 by Venerable Pomnyun, published in 1995, and have been amazed by how it explains the profound contents of Buddhism in an easy-to-understand way.

In June 2022, the completely new 『Dharma Master Beopryun's Lectures on the Heart Sutra』 systematically and scientifically explains profound Buddhist thought in a way that is even easier and clearer to understand, even for those who are completely unfamiliar with Buddhism.
Everyone will be surprised at how easy it is to understand the Buddha's words.
And you will be deeply amazed that 2,500 years ago, the Buddha perfectly showed that the cause of suffering is in the 'mind' and that he presented a way to resolve that suffering.

What an easy 『Heart Sutra』!

The Heart Sutra is a sutra that encapsulates the idea of 'emptiness', which is the core of Mahayana Buddhism.
The sutras are the words of the Buddha, and the words of the Buddha are the teachings of the 'enlightened' to lead the 'unenlightened' to enlightenment.
By reading the Heart Sutra, you can find a way to escape suffering and attain enlightenment through the Buddha's teachings.

Monk Beopryun, who became familiar to the public through several best-selling books and impromptu lectures, vividly explained the Heart Sutra, which was difficult to understand due to the format of Buddhist scriptures and the condensed Buddhist thoughts and concepts, in language that was accessible to the public.
『Dharma Wheel Monk's Lectures on the Heart Sutra』 is a masterpiece written by Dharma Wheel Monk, who poured his heart and soul into making the teachings of Buddha from 2,500 years ago a compass for us living in this age.

How to be free from suffering,
- 『Heart Sutra』

The COVID-19 pandemic has taught us firsthand that the world is now interconnected, and that individual change can spark a butterfly effect of social change.
If I change my mind and become happy, I can change the whole world.
『Dharma Master Beopryun's lectures on the Heart Sutra』 contain principles of mindfulness and healing for those who are suffering from difficult life.

The Heart Sutra teaches the principles of healing the mind.

Buddhism is the teachings of the Buddha that enable us to become aware of our own minds and learn how to escape suffering. The Heart Sutra contains the core of these teachings of the Buddha.
Monk Beopryun says that happiness is not suffering.
If I become aware of the pain within me, I can be happy without being dragged by the pain.
True freedom can be achieved by breaking free from the endless cycle of pain and pleasure (samsara).
To do that, you must understand the reason.
In 『Dharma Master Beopryun's lectures on the Heart Sutra』, the principles are explained in the easiest language.
And it explains it in a friendly way so that you can apply it to real life and put it into practice.

The five aggregates, the twelve foundations, the eighteen realms, the twelve links of dependent origination, the four noble truths, the eightfold path…
『Dharma Wheel Monk's Lectures on the Heart Sutra』, which shows us that Buddhist ideas that made it difficult to approach Buddhism as if they were an unknown spell are actually simple and surprising principles.
At this very moment, here, I present to you the path to liberation that will free everyone from suffering and bring them happiness.

What is the Heart Sutra?

Buddhist scriptures are broadly divided into Mahayana scriptures and Hinayana scriptures.
The Heart Sutra belongs to the Prajna section of the Mahayana sutras.
There are 600 volumes of the Prajnaparamita Sutra, and the Heart Sutra is the shortest summary of the contents of the Prajnaparamita Sutra.

The epitome of Mahayana Buddhist thought,
- 『Heart Sutra』

The composition of the Heart Sutra

The Heart Sutra that we recite is the main text, omitting the preface and distribution parts, in which Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva explains the Mahayana emptiness to Sariputra.
Meanwhile, the 260-character abridged version (Jeongjongbun) is divided into three paragraphs.

First, it is the content of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva preaching the idea of emptiness, which is the essence of Mahayana thought.
Second, it points out the errors and limitations of Theravada Buddhism.
This content points out the harmful effects of misunderstandings in Theravada Buddhism regarding the five aggregates, twelve foundations, eighteen precepts, twelve links of dependent origination, the Four Noble Truths, and the Eightfold Path.
Third, it praises the greatness of Prajna, the enlightenment of Mahayana.
If you practice Prajna Paramita and attain enlightenment, you can be free from all suffering.
This last paragraph is a passage that once again emphasizes and praises the greatness of Mahayana thought.

First, to know the enlightened one, the Buddha

If you want to understand 『Dharma Master Beopryun's lectures on the Heart Sutra』 and use them as a guide for your life, you must know the life of Buddha.
If you know what the Buddha was like, what he said, and what kind of life he lived, you will be able to better understand the true meaning hidden between the lines of the Heart Sutra.
For this reason, I recommend reading together 『The Human Buddha』, which covers the life of the Buddha, and 『Dharma Master Beopryun's Lectures on the Diamond Sutra』, which covers the concept of emptiness in a broad sense.
