One-Cut World History
One-Cut World History
Description
Book Introduction
A living story of world history told through a single photo by history teachers.
From 'Lucy Walks on Two Feet' to 'The Voice Calling for Action Amid the Climate Crisis', 150 topics are discussed with photos.
A set with the popular book recommended by former President Moon Jae-in, "Korean History in One Cut"

『One Cut World History』 was planned as a set with 『One Cut Korean History』, which became a hot topic after being recommended by former President Moon Jae-in.
This book is written by history teachers who are currently teaching or have taught history in middle and high schools, and tells the story of an era contained in a single photograph or drawing from the perspective of a history teacher.

We selected and arranged topics by era and region, and searched through vast amounts of data to include photos and pictures that perfectly fit the topic.
One topic consists of one page of photos and one page of stories.

In this book, the authors sought to tell the stories of the underprivileged, including women and children, who have been overlooked and voiceless throughout history.
I also wanted to create a new narrative using familiar photographs.
This is because the first step in studying history is to carefully examine the data and examine it three-dimensionally to discover hidden meanings.

Efforts were also made to discover historical materials that connect the past and present.
In this regard, attention was also paid to the question of how history is remembered and commemorated.
I tried not to miss the fact that even with a single historical fact, evaluations change depending on perspective and era, and the way we remember and commemorate it changes.

Although photographs and drawings may seem like objective evidence, I tried not to lose sight of the fact that they too contain some kind of intention.
I tried to create a narrative that leads to the scene of the times by critically approaching the photographer and artist to understand why they took such photos and drew such pictures, and by inferring from the data.

"A Single Cut of World History" is a light and enjoyable book that adds a sense of problem to the fun.

Into the book
There is only one species of modern humans, Homo sapiens.
In the course of evolution, countless human species became extinct and only one species survived.
This is very disadvantageous for future survival and evolution.
Securing diversity is the only strategy for surviving evolution.
This is also the reason why we must cherish and cherish ‘special species’ without discrimination.
--- From "Lucy, Walking on Two Feet"

After a while, the Jews started a war of independence.
The Roman Empire sent troops to suppress the rebellion and forcibly relocate the Jews to places such as the Iberian Peninsula.
And they destroyed the temple, their center.
At this time, only the western wall of the temple remained, which is now known as the Wailing Wall.
For the Jews who lived in the Diaspora (Greek for "dispersion"), wandering around the world, the Western Wall remains a special relic that reminds them of their history and identity.
--- From "The Jews Who Served the One God"

An 11th-century French bishop said, “God has not one house, but three.
People who pray, people who fight, people who work.
These three must never be separated.
“Because the service offered by one side becomes the condition for the other two to work,” he said.
If you want to have knights fighting against praying priests, you definitely need working serfs.
In the end, the one who fights the one who prays stands on the blood and sweat of the one who works.
--- From "Those Who Fight and Those Who Work"

There are numerous monuments commemorating the American Revolutionary War across the United States, and interestingly, these monuments have changed in form and meaning over time.
Most early monuments honored war leaders or men who took up arms, but the first monuments to women were erected in the early 1900s as the women's suffrage movement gained momentum.
As relations between Britain and the United States improved, monuments were erected calling the British, who had been portrayed as cruel enemies, "brave enemies."
However, for a long time, African Americans and Native Americans were not represented on monuments.
Only recently has their role been brought into new light.
The American Revolutionary War was a significant historical event in its own right, but the monuments commemorating it also reflect changes and trends in American society.
--- From "America Breaks Free from British Rule"

The collapse of the imperial system that had lasted for over two thousand years since the Qin Shi Huang era stimulated the dreams of a republic among intellectuals in Joseon and Vietnam.
Encouraged by the news of the success of the Wuchang Uprising, many intellectuals from colonial Korea fled to China, and Vietnamese independence activists flocked to Guangzhou to form the Vietnam Liberation Association.
In this way, the Xinhai Revolution was an event that had a great impact not only on China but also on neighboring countries.
--- From "The Xinhai Revolution: The Emperor's Abandonment and the Republic's Establishment"

The Balfour Declaration shocked Hussein, who was leading the Arab revolt.
This is because he wanted to build an Arab kingdom that would encompass all three of Islam's holiest sites: Mecca, Medina, and Jerusalem.
Jerusalem in Palestine was a holy place for Judaism, but it was also a holy place for Islam.
Britain's conflicting promises fueled conflict between Arabs and Jews over Palestine.
This conflict continues today in the form of violence and conflict.
--- From "Britain's Contradictory Promises, Bringing About the Palestinian Conflict"

Over the years, humanity has built many 'walls', not just the Berlin Wall, that divide people, places of residence, cities, and countries.
There have been constant attempts to overcome that barrier, and it can be said that this has been the force that has pushed human history forward step by step.
--- From "The Cold War System Collapses with the Berlin Wall"

In fact, human progress was not only due to technology, fire, and language.
This was possible because the Earth, with its clear water, clean air, and soft soil, became the foundation of life, and all life on Earth existed together.
If humanity becomes intoxicated with its own abilities and forgets this fact, the future will be dark.
Because our survival still depends on coexistence with the Earth we stand on and the life on it.
--- From "Where is humanity in Earth's history?"
