“Hey, we’re in the same class again! I told you, you and I are truly destined.”
Jisoo sat down next to Nagi, making a fuss.
These two were in the same class during the 1st, 4th, 5th, and 6th grades of elementary school.
Since there were 10 classes in total, it was a 1 in 10,000 chance of being together, and that was almost the entire reason why Jisoo felt close to Nagi.
Nagi was grateful for Jisoo's friendliness, but at times he didn't understand it.
"If we hit this time, isn't it a 1 in 60,000 chance? We're truly destined."
“Haha, should we make a peach garden oath or something since it’s come to this?”
Jisoo looked puzzled at Nagi's witty reply and asked back.
“What is the Peach Garden Oath?”
"omg.
“Haven’t you seen ‘Romance of the Three Kingdoms’?”
“I read the first part, but it wasn’t my taste.”
“It comes out at the very beginning.
“Let’s die together at the same time on the same day…”
“What is that?
“Do you want to commit suicide with me?”
“No?!”
--- p.20~21
“Last time we talked about the sun.
Let's finish that story today.
The sun will likely remain in a similar state to its present state for the next 500 million years, he said.
So what happens next? The Sun shines as a result of the chain reaction of hydrogen nuclear fusion occurring at its core.
As time passes, it gets brighter and hotter little by little.
As a result, within a billion years, the Earth will become too hot to support life, and in 5 billion years, the average temperature of the Earth will exceed 500℃.
Over time, the hydrogen in the Sun's core will gradually be depleted, and nuclear fusion will occur in the outer parts of the core, expanding the star's shell.
If this expansion continues, in about 10 billion years the Sun will become a subgiant star with a brightness about twice that of today, and soon it will transform into an even more massive red giant.
By then, the Earth will have been swallowed by the expanding Sun, but since there will be no life left on Earth by then, it won't be that big of a deal."
--- p.70~71
As Lina turned the corner, engrossed in her periodic table, she bumped into someone walking in the opposite direction.
“Wow!”
Lina quickly regained her balance, but the teacher who collided with Lina fell to the ground on his butt.
“Ah… the periodic table… no, sorry!”
Lina, who was so embarrassed that she couldn't even speak, was fidgeting with her face flushed.
Mr. Gong Wi-seong, who fell down alone after bumping into a first-year middle school girl who was carrying a box, was also flustered.
He tried to look calm and stood up from his seat, picking up one of the boxes Lina was holding.
“I guess you were thinking about the periodic table.”
After hearing the destination from Lina, Mr. Gong Wi-seong walked ahead and began to talk.

It's been a few days since I went to the swimming pool.
Jisoo, who was passing through the hallway on the first floor of the Mars Hall, stopped walking when she discovered a cat statue.
The cat statue made of white marble was seen playing with a golden thread, rolling it with its forepaws.
Jisoo recalled the conversation between Geumseul and Geo at the swimming pool.
I couldn't remember the exact words, but I was sure it had a cat in it.
As Jisoo was resting her chin on one hand and trying to recall her memories, Mr. Gong Wi-seong approached her with an uncomfortable gait.
“…Do you like cats?”
“Oh, hello.
“Is this that drunk cat or something?”
“Are you talking about Schrödinger’s cat?”
"that's right!"

'If I were an asteroid, then Jisoo would be the sun.'
Nagi thought that it was thanks to Jisoo's gravity that he was able to stay in orbit and not fly off into space.
Big, strong, and always bright, Jisoo was always noticeable by his mere presence, drawing people to his side.
'What if the index disappears?'
For a moment, Nagi imagined the sun disappearing.
Asteroids that lost their center of gravity and scattered at a speed of 20 km/s.
Some of them may be drawn into the gravity of other celestial bodies, but most will drift through the empty void of space for what seems like an eternity.
The nearest star to Earth is over 4 light years away, so a speed of 20 kilometers per second would be practically stationary.
--- p.152
“If we say DNA information, it’s only about the size of a CD. Does it make sense to explain all of our actions with that?”
"Really? Is that all there is to human genetic information?"
“Human DNA is made up of four types of bases: adenine, guanine, cytosine, and thymine, and RNA has uracil instead of thymine.
There are a total of 3.2 billion base pairs in 46 genes, but adenine pairs with thymine, and guanine pairs with cytosine, so if you know one base sequence, you can automatically know the other.
Then, since each digit can be expressed as 2 bits, the total base is 6.4 billion bits, and if converted to megabytes (MB), it is approximately 760 MB. Since one CD is 700 MB, it can be considered as approximately one CD.”

Publisher's Review
The strangest, funniest, and most mysterious school in Korea is opening its doors!
Science × Mystery × Fantasy Novel "Science Specialized Middle School"
Tteundol Publishing presents a new youth novel series, “Science Specialized Middle School.”
This series is a science mystery fantasy novel written by Dr. Ver, who holds a Ph.D. in Energy Systems Engineering from Seoul National University and is the author of the Naver webtoon “Doctor & Doctor Parenting Diary,” to introduce the fun of science to young people.
This series, which will be published in three volumes, will further enhance the immersion into the vast world view by adding illustrations by artist Lippe, who is much loved by teenagers for his gorgeous and detailed background descriptions and cute and warm character designs.
The first volume, "The First Secret That Started Where the Rainbow Broke," which is being published this time, announces the opening of a science-specialized middle school, a gathering place for a small number of gifted students, and tells the exciting story of five friends who uncover the secrets hidden there.
Uncovering the secrets hidden in science-specialized middle schools
A wild science mystery adventure with five unique friends!
A science-specialized middle school established by Cheonha Electronics, a leading Korean company, to foster creative talent.
At the long-awaited entrance ceremony, the principal leaves a mysterious mission: “There is a hidden secret in this school. If you are interested, find the ‘place where the rainbow broke.’”
Nagi, a genius boy who is obsessed with something and digs into it relentlessly, discovers a rainbow-painted log staircase on the dirt path behind the dormitory with his four friends.
But there were unpainted parts in the stairs here and there, and Nagi and his friends realized that there was some scientific rule hidden in the stairs… .
〈Science Specialized Middle School〉 is structured in the form of an ‘escape room game’ where students must solve problems to advance to the next level.
What they find where the rainbow breaks is not the answer, but just a hint. Nagi and his friends use their knowledge equivalent to a high school freshman's science course, including 'absorption spectrum', 'birth and death of stars', 'atomic structure', 'periodic table', 'flame reaction', and 'DNA base sequence', to find the places the hint points to.
If you think that since we've gathered only the best talents in Korea, we'll be able to solve such problems easily, you're mistaken.
Nagi, who doesn't notice when someone carries her once she's lost in thought, Jisoo, who finds it easier to use her muscles than her head, Geumseul, an otaku who pretends not to be an otaku, Geo, who likes science but is afraid of ghosts, and Lina, who lives and dies for ballet, are characters that don't just exist in science-specialized middle schools, but also give us a sense of familiarity that makes us think they exist around us.
The journey to find answers hidden in sometimes confusing and sometimes eerie hints clearly shows the personalities of the five friends.
The era of studying by memorizing is over!
The new world of 'virtue and merit' revealed by Dr. Ver
Science cannot be left out when it comes to subjects that students find difficult to study.
This is because you have to overcome the huge mountain called mathematics to reach it, and as you advance in grade level, the knowledge you have to memorize becomes cosmically vast.
Dr. Bert also frequently heard stories from readers who expressed the difficulties of studying science at lectures and interviews.
"How can we free more people from the burden of obligation and compulsion and make science fun?" He pondered this, and eventually turned to the power of storytelling.
“There is a Japanese manga called ‘Ghost Go King.’
It's a cartoon about baduk, and even people who don't know anything about baduk find it really interesting to watch the process of who wins and loses against whom.
Seeing that, I realized the power of storytelling.
“I wrote this piece with the idea of writing a novel that would be interesting even to people who aren’t interested in science.”
As if to represent this determination, author Dr. Ber exquisitely combines scientific and humanistic sensibilities, such as expressing human relationships as 'covalent bonds' and 'ionic bonds', or comparing the precarious state before confession to 'Schrödinger's cat', and conveys scientific knowledge that would otherwise be a headache when seen in textbooks and workbooks in an easy and fun way by incorporating it into the story.
Integrated science is just a passing fad, and as you wander through the densely woven science-specialized middle school filled with intricate reasoning and unique characters, you will be able to experience a new world of "deokgongilchi (deokjongilchi and study are one)" where you will not be able to tell whether you are studying or doing something interesting.
Of course, there will be some who shake their heads and say they don't even know the first thing about science.
Don't be afraid, just unfold it.
You will come to know what 'I don't know, but it feels fun' is.
If you keep turning the pages one by one with enjoyment, science, which you have always considered to be someone else's, may become yours.
That was the beginning of many things we like and love.
The most bizarre, fun, and mysterious school in Korea, 'Science Specialized Middle School' is open to anyone who loves or hates science, regardless of age or gender.
Parents and children can attend together, take classes at their own pace, and rest whenever they want.
What do you think?
Wouldn't it be worth going at least once?
