“Not bad grades,
It's like the minimum insurance to endure this world.
I was able to hold out until middle school.

A tough high school life,
Just enduring and holding on isn't the answer.

The novel's protagonist, Bang Jun-ho, says that maintaining decent grades is like taking out the minimum insurance to endure this world.
Doosung High School, known as a prestigious school due to its outstanding college entrance exam results, surprises Jun-ho from the first day of school.
It was surprising that he started studying right away on the evening of his first day of school, and then suddenly his name was called out in the auditorium.
The names of the thirty new students who will enter the 'Jeongdoksil', a special study room for top students with the best study environment, were called out in order of their grades.
Gunwoo, Junho's best friend, narrowly missed entering the reading room.
Things start to get awkward between Junho and Gunwoo.
Although Junho did well on the placement test, he can't help but feel that it was due to the mistakes made by the other kids.
In the end, I failed both the mock exam and the midterm exam in March.
Junho struggles through each day feeling like “school is pushing me away.”
New characters become entangled in his daily life.
There are more than a few things to worry about, from the sudden date request from Harim, who was famous for being a 'pro-ana' in middle school, to the sudden transfer announcement from Yubin, who he met in the current affairs debate club 'Core', to the inexplicable restraint from Min Byeong-seo, who never misses out on being number one in the entire school, whether it's a mock exam or a midterm.
High school life seems increasingly challenging. Will Jun-ho be able to endure it? Or is enduring really the answer?

“I have been accustomed to praise since I was young, and I have never experienced a situation where I was not recognized.
So I really didn't know which way my mind was going.
“Because I lived like a model student, doing what I had to do rather than what my heart told me to do.”

Junho realizes that he has never thought about how his mind works.
Until middle school, Junho just did the things that were in front of him.
But Junho's 'just' as he finishes his first semester in high school is read a little differently.
“I just decided to give it a try.
“What I need to do today.” (p. 125) These are words filled with the profound realization that what I can control now is not the results of a test that has not yet arrived, but only the time I spend for myself in this moment.

The author noted that even if it appears that everything is going well, the daily lives of test takers are inevitably filled with all sorts of worries underneath the surface.
Midterms and finals, performance evaluations and mock exams, volunteer work and club activities that require weekends to be split up… … .
Filling the jam-packed schedules of liberal arts high schools are a variety of concerns, as diverse as the number of students.
Worries about appearance, worries about unrequited love, worries about rumors going around on social media, worries about the subtle emotions that arise when seeing friends who have higher or lower grades than you, worries about whether it is okay to choose a different path from others, worries about having to confront your parents in the end, etc. The internal conflicts of high school freshmen who enter an unfamiliar stage with hearts that are even heavier than those in middle school are densely packed into every word of the novel.

Even when faced with situations so overwhelming that they sometimes require specific "survival skills," the children in the novel invariably go to school, attend classes, prepare for exams, and study.
As you discover your own manual to get through the day.
I also found a manual for a friend who was having a hard time.
The upcoming second semester will definitely not be easy.
However, Junho, Gunwoo, Yubin, Bona, Harim, and Byeongseo will surely 'survive' safely in their own ways.
