Time Bearer
Description
Book Introduction
A real estate speculation frenzy has swept through rural housing villages around the metropolitan area. The forest where children's souls grew is in danger of disappearing! A fire that started as a small prank by seven neighborhood children burned down a large forest. Instead of being severely punished, they promise to take responsibility and save the forest. The seven children planted trees in the burnt-out area, and they diligently tended the forest, carrying water every day. As time passes, they grow up, get married, and have children. Their children also grow up in the forest from an early age. Then one day, that very forest was in danger of disappearing. A real estate speculation frenzy has swept through this once peaceful village! Adults, already steeped in the pleasures of capital, have completely forgotten the promise they made as children to preserve the forest they so cherished and pass it on to their children. Instead, they're fixated on how to sell it off and live better. Against this backdrop, Binsae, Kyo-sang, Jool, Hangi, and Ian struggle to protect the forest that nurtured their souls like friends and parents. But there's someone who spends time traveling back and forth between the past and present, the time of their parents' youth! Through this time, they see a different side of the adults, steeped in greed... Will the children be able to safely protect the forest? This novel began with a small forest fire incident that author Lee Sang-kwon experienced himself as a child. He said that after clearing the charred orchard, planting young trees, and watering them all summer, he opened his eyes to hundreds of different types of grass, trees, and life. He wanted to share the stories he had nurtured and cared for for decades with his children. The two messages of 'nature' and 'environmental protection', which are familiar yet feel somewhat distant, are combined with the mysterious yet fascinating subject of 'time messenger', making it difficult to take your eyes off them. |

Into the book
Even though it has been about twenty years since it was incorporated into the city, it is still called by its old village name instead of its dong name. However, it has become a place that is so valuable that you can no longer enter without money.
The indigenous people who once lived in prosperity thanks to their ancestors have almost all left, and now only about five or six households are barely hanging on.
As we walked through the village, we came across newly built country house complexes.
Until ten years ago, it was a back hill close to a cemetery.
But when I was ten, a torrential downpour at the end of the dry season completely destroyed the order there.
Most of the remains could not be found due to the landslide.
The clan members gathered the remains they had barely managed to find, cremated them, placed them in a small columbarium, and then, as if they had been waiting, sold the land.
The construction company that purchased most of the land called it Dongsan Village, claiming that the grave site was the best location for a tomb.

A town meeting was called.
The children who had started the fire were kneeling in front of the hall.
There were two women and the other five were men.
“They all had their heads down so I couldn’t see their faces.” (Omitted) We lost such a precious forest.
But that doesn't mean we can lose our future.
“Because children are our future.” His voice was low and unmilitary, which made it resonant.
“The forest is gone, but it can be brought back to life.
The child who started the fire and his family must take responsibility and promise us that they will save that forest." ---p.

As soon as I opened my eyes, I checked my pants.
In the dream, I was wearing jeans and now I was in pajamas, but surprisingly, I was wearing my pajama pants inside out.
Even then, that night when I was chasing the fly, I wore my pants inside out.
I shook my head in disbelief.
I remembered playing with my teacher, chasing fireflies, before I fell asleep, and tried to think about it before I fell asleep.
But how could such a vivid dream appear! ---p.

“Ian said something like that a while ago, right? He got something like an old fan from the teacher.
Is anyone there? I told my dad about it, and he said it wasn't a fan, but a bronze mirror.
My father also heard that such a relic was passed down in our family.
“The person who possesses it is called a ‘time messenger’, and can freely travel through time and transmit time as they wish.”
“Wow! I wish I had that! But does that make sense?”
“My dad was sure of it.
According to my father, the person he called "Grandpa Boss" was the time transmitter, and he passed it on to the teacher afterward.
“Time Bearers use their magical powers to act as forest guardians and resolve any misfortunes that arise within the clan!” ---p.

“I can’t even sleep these days, just thinking about it.
I know this is not right, but the world has changed.
People will leave that golden land alone! Even so, we alone shouldn't change, but honestly, I'm not sure.
“Even if we hold on to that value to the end, will it be preserved?” (Omitted) “Honey, but let me tell you something.
Just thinking about the port... ... If I could just build one or two studio apartments or commercial buildings with that money, I could live there later and receive monthly rent.
That kind of thinking… … .” ---p.

“Anyway, from then on, people started asking for advice from Mr. Yoo Jin-ha, planting trees, and cultivating forests centered around trees that sprouted naturally in the forest.
In this birch forest, more than twenty species of trees live together.
The teacher said that even if stronger trees appear later and overshadow the birch trees, we should accept that as a natural thing.
Only then can the forest's diversity be created and the forest become eternal.
“People are just following such changes, and they cannot be the ones to block the flow and artificially drag the forest.” ---p.

“By the way, who is spending such time with us?”
“That’s what I mean.
I thought there was a time-bearer among us, but here we are, all gathered together. If Ian had listened to him earlier and tried to pass the time, someone among us would have had to move, or at least use a magic fan or a bronze mirror to do something.
But no one moved, we were just sucked into that magical time!”

Publisher's Review
Lee Sang-kwon, our country's best ecological writer,
Speaking of the uncomfortable truth that has become our reality
Special Youth Literature, the fourteenth story.
Lee Sang-kwon, who has sung about nature and the environment through works such as 『The New Homodeus Chronicles』, 『The House Duck that Flew to the Sky』, 『The Dog Trial』, and 『The Squirrel Raised by a Cat』, has revised and supplemented the youth novel 『The Forest Answered』, which was selected as an excellent environmental book by the Ministry of Environment in 2018, and published 『Time Messenger』.
The new book perfectly showcases Lee Sang-kwon's literary achievements, including a refined and refined device that summons time messengers to create solid foreshadowing and surprising twists, and a meticulous depiction of the subtle relationships between characters and the way they speak that reveals their personalities.
"Time Bearer" will impress not only readers who are reading Lee Sang-kwon's work for the first time, but also avid readers who have enjoyed his work for a long time with its high-quality narrative.
As the COVID-19 pandemic sweeps the globe, many experts are increasingly asserting that environmental destruction is not unrelated to the cause of the current crisis.
The environment surrounding us is constantly changing.
As the days go by, it is hotter than any summer, colder than any winter, the Arctic ice is melting, and the four seasons are disappearing.
Every year, these problems only get worse, and we don't hear any signs of improvement.
Why have we come so far?
Why do we try to cover up nature's warnings?
When the things we use wear out, we can just pay and buy new ones, but unfortunately, nature cannot do that.
Because while recovery may be possible, creating new ones is impossible.
In "Time Bearer," there is a sharp clash between adults who want to develop the forest and children who want to protect it.
To develop or to preserve?
Money or nature?
Present or future.
Unfortunately, it seems that the disappearance of forests has become a daily occurrence.
The time in the forest where only humans can survive, the time where countless creatures live, disappears in just a few hours.
Looking at it, I always thought of the time transmitter.
How wonderful it would be if someone could convey the countless hours that forest has passed through.
-From the creative notes
True to his title of “Korea’s best ecological writer,” Lee Sang-kwon’s love and passion for nature and the environment are fully expressed in his writing in “Time Transmitter.”
He talks about the 'inconvenient truths' we face, but he doesn't try to teach anyone by using discomfort as a weapon.
It does not force or pressure anyone, such as pointing out a life that turns its back on nature or criticizing humans' arrogant attitude toward nature.
All the dreams, hopes, love, passion, and happiness that we believe to be everything now, all these things calmly portray the fact that the Earth we stand on could never exist unless nature permitted it.
It's just a novel that makes us look back and see what values we are losing.
As with his previous books, "The Time Bearer" will inspire many to reflect deeply on the nature we enjoy.
