The story of Sinclair, a boy who is becoming a true adult.
"The Way to Oneself" by Hermann Hesse, a master of German literature
“The bird struggles to get out of the egg. The egg is the world. “He who wants to be born must destroy a world.” One day, a mysterious boy named Damian appears in front of Sinclair, who was living a good life in a warm home, and begins to teach him the truth about good and evil, one by one, through the story of Cain and Abel from the Bible. Sinclair, tormented between good and evil within himself, is unable to resist temptation and goes out into the streets to pursue forbidden pleasures, but he overcomes his dark inner self when he meets Beatrice. Sinclair's portrait of Beatrice bears a striking resemblance to Demian. It is because of the longing and intense longing for Damian. Then one day, Sinclair meets Demian and his mother, Madame Eva, on the street, and later realizes that Madame Eva is the woman who existed inside him. Demian and Sinclair, who participated in the war that broke out shortly after, talk while lying in a field hospital. Damian, who left a message telling her to listen to herself whenever she needs him, disappears the next morning. 『Demian』 is based on the friendship between the main characters Sinclair and Demian, and reflects on the trials they face during their growing up years, their overcoming of those trials, and the process of reaching a complete self through enlightenment. This work represented a new beginning for Hesse himself, and it displays characteristics of both his earlier and later works, such as the psychology of childhood, strict structure, criticism of civilization, and the idea of the mother as the source of all things. |

Into the book
'We must not so naively imagine the reasoning of the mystical societies of that ancient sect as to think of it from the standpoint of rationalistic observation.
The science we have today was completely unknown to the ancients.
Instead, the study of highly developed philosophical and mystical truths flourished.
From there arose magic and entertainment, which in part clearly led to fraud and criminal activity.
But that magic also had a noble history and deep thoughts.
The same goes for the theory of Abraxas that I gave as an example earlier.
This name is said to have been related to a Greek spell, and is still often thought to be the name of some demon possessed by barbarian peoples.
But I know that Abraxas means much more.
We may think of this name as a kind of god, with a symbolic relationship that roughly combines the divine and the demonic.'

"The bird struggles to get out of the egg.
The egg is the world.
He who is to be born must destroy a world.
The bird flies to God.
The name of the god is Abraxas."
After reading this passage several times, I fell into deep thought.
Any doubt was impossible.
This was the reply from Damian.
No one could have known about that bird except me and him.
He received my painting.
But what did all this have to do with each other? And what bothered me most of all was the question: What is Abraxas?
It was something I had never heard or read before.
"The name of God is Abraxas!"
