- A word from MD
-
A wondrous space adventure from the author of "The Martian."Project Hailmary is the story of a scientist who embarks on a space mission from which there is no return to save Earth from destruction.
In the middle of space, aboard the one-way spaceship "Hail Mary," only one protagonist survives! With aliens making matters worse, will he be able to safely complete his mission, bearing the fate of humanity on his shoulders?Novel/Poetry PD Park Hyung-wook
“This is hands down the best science fiction book ever written!”
Project Hail Mary, a film released worldwide in 2026
The novel 『Project Hailmary』, which has captivated science fiction fans around the world, has been consistently loved in Korea for four years since its publication, providing “thrilling moments for those who love science and space.”
The film, which was produced by MGM after a fierce competition for the rights, is now in the final stages of production, as evidenced by the over 20 million views of the trailer alone. Not only movie lovers, but also readers who have been eagerly waiting for the book to be adapted into a film are eagerly awaiting the release date with great anticipation.
At this point, why not join the journey of Ryland Grace and Loki in the Yes24 Limited Edition Recover Edition?
This edition, which includes a brief anecdote about Andy Weir's third novel and the process of writing it, will allow you to rediscover the charm of the space trilogy.
Andy Weir is a true science fiction writer, having achieved great success with his debut novel, The Martian, and his sequel, Artemis, which became bestsellers on the New York Times and Amazon.
As the work of an author renowned for researching and verifying scientific facts when writing, the impeccable scientific knowledge is second to none.
Following his previous works, this work also fully portrays the author's strengths, a science-based SF worldview and optimistic sensibility.
In particular, the appearance of the 'special character' meticulously planned by the author is the highlight of 'Project Hail Mary'.
The novel is primarily about coexistence and solidarity with that special character, and a friendship that transcends humanity.
The protagonist, a 'good person' who boards the Hail Mary to save the Earth, but cannot return to Earth on his own.
If "The Martian" showed humanity in saving one human, this time, the sense of mission and affection of one human being in saving all of humanity is even more vividly displayed.
Andy Weir's world has become deeper and wider.

Into the book
The situation was dire and critical, but that was also normal.
Londoners who suffered from heavy air raids during World War II continued their daily lives as usual.
Even though we know that buildings sometimes blow away.
No matter how desperate the situation, someone has to keep delivering milk.
And if Mrs. McCready's house gets bombed at night, well, that house gets struck off the delivery list.
It was also a situation where the world was one or two generations away from destruction (possibly caused by alien life forms).
I stood in front of the children and taught them basic science.
What is the point of the world if we cannot pass it on to the next generation?
--- p.54
“I entrust my body to the stars.” That seems like an appropriate phrase.
It may be cliche, but saying it like that makes me feel a little better.
Next, I transport Commander Yao to the airlock.
Put him inside, seal the airlock, and then send his remains out in the same way.
“Yao Lijie,” I say.
I don't know why I remember his name so well.
It just occurred to me at that moment.
“I entrust your body to the stars.”
The airlock spins and I'm alone.
I've been alone all this time, but now I'm truly alone.
I am the only human alive within at least a few light years.
--- p.99
30 years.
I looked at the children's small faces.
In 30 years, all of these children will be in their early 40s.
These kids will bear all the burden.
It will not be an easy task.
These children spend their childhood in an idyllic world, only to be thrown into a nightmare of world destruction.
These children were the generation that would experience the sixth mass extinction.
I felt a lump in my stomach.
I was looking at a classroom full of children, happy children.
And some of them were likely to literally starve to death.
“Teacher…” I stuttered.
“Teacher, I think I should go and do something.
“Forget about the rock challenge.”
--- p.103
“Dr. Grace, I’m not in a position to leave a sample here to soothe your wounded ego.”
"A wounded ego? This isn't my ego problem! This is our children's problem!"
“You don’t have any children.”
“No, there are! There are dozens of them.
Children come to my class every day.
But if we don't solve this problem, all of those children will face a Mad Max-style nightmare.
Yes, I was wrong about the water.
That doesn't really matter.
My interest is children.
So, please give me some of those poor Astrophage guys!”
--- pp.106-107
I came on a suicide mission.
John, Paul, George, and Ringo return home, but my long and arduous journey ends here.
I must have known all this when I volunteered for this mission.
But to my amnesiac brain, this information is new.
I die here.
You will die alone.
--- p.111
Humanity is not alone in the universe.
And I just met our neighbor.
“What the fuck!”
--- p.179
“Another similarity.
You and I are both willing to die for our people.
Why, you ask? Evolution hates death.”
“It’s a good thing for the entire species,” I say.
“The instinct for self-sacrifice increases the likelihood of the entire species continuing.”
“Not all Eridians are willing to die for others.”
I giggle.
“Humans are like that too.”
“You and I are good people,” says Loki.
“Yeah.” I smile.
“I think so.”
--- p.506
“Malnutrition, riots, famine, all infrastructure will be used for food production and war.
The entire social fabric will collapse.
The plague will spread too.
There are a tremendous number of epidemics all over the world.
Because it would overwhelm the health care system.
“Even outbreaks of diseases that were once easily controlled will become uncontrollable.”
She turned and faced me.
“War, famine, disease, death.
Astrophagy is literally the end.
The Hail Mary is all we have now.
“I would sacrifice anything to increase the Hail Mary’s chances of success even by a little.”
(syncopation)
“Go to hell.”
“Oh, that will be it.
It definitely will.
The three of us, including the doctor, will go to Tau Ceti.
The rest of us go to hell.
To be more precise, hell is coming to us.”

Publisher's Review
“I, who can’t even remember my own name, am the hope of humanity?”
A project to save the Earth from destruction!
*Simultaneously published in 30 countries worldwide
*La La Land confirmed to be adapted into a film starring Ryan Gosling
*An immediate bestseller upon publication
*Publisher's Weekly's Most Anticipated Novels of 2021
'Hail Mary' is an American football term that comes from a pass made in the final moments of a game in hopes of turning the game around.
The name of the spaceship in the work, 'Hail Mary', was also created with the hope of a final reversal to save the Earth from destruction.
The protagonist woke up after a long sleep and found himself in the middle of space.
But he can't even remember his own name.
To make matters worse, all of his comrades on the spaceship Hail Mary died, leaving him alone.
After thoroughly searching the Hail Mary, he realizes one thing.
He was the last hope for saving humanity, and a scientist destined to die in the middle of space.
In the novel, the Earth is in danger of extinction due to an unknown life form called 'Astrophage' that is lowering the temperature of the sun.
The protagonist goes on a space mission to investigate the astrophage and find a solution.
However, due to technical limitations, the protagonist was destined to die alone in space after sending the solution to eliminate Astrophage to Earth.
That is, he came to space as a member of the 'One Way Hail Mary'.
But wait, something strange is picked up on the spaceship's instrument panel.
He's busy regaining his memories and saving humanity, and then an alien suddenly appears? Will he be able to complete his mission to save Earth and die safely(?)?
“Not everyone is willing to die for others.”
An epic with the most dazzling ending in science fiction history,
Ordinary goodness saves two human beings!
Andy Weir, who has been working at the U.S. National Laboratory since he was fifteen and was called a "genius" in the industry.
He makes full use of his outstanding scientific knowledge in his novels.
It is already well known among science lovers that Andy Weir wrote his works without breaking a single existing law of physics.
In this work, too, everything from Euler's formula to aerodynamics and the Goldilocks zone is not glossed over.
Another advantage is that it is a proven 'page-turner'.
It is no exaggeration to say that the author's skill in weaving together science and novelistic humor is truly world-class.
In Project Hail Mary, there is a constant cycle of crises occurring and being resolved.
Moreover, since it is set in space, the scale is grand.
The reason why readers can't put this work down and read it with interest doesn't end here.
This is thanks to the protagonist who occasionally cracks jokes regardless of the serious atmosphere of the human crisis and the author's unique optimism that permeates between sentences.
So where does that optimism come from? Andy Weir answered this question: "I've struggled with depression and been in poverty, but I've always had a strong belief in humanity.
Calling an ambulance for someone you don't know and moving out of the way when an ambulance passes by doesn't make the news.
It is perfectly normal and common for humans to help each other.
“If we look at it from a broader perspective, we believe that we are continuously making the future better,” he replied.
The reason his novels are so well-read is not only because of their well-crafted stories and witty prose, but also because of their faith in a future filled with small acts of goodwill.
In 『Project Hail Mary』, where small goodwill is the main keyword, there are not only a few heroes.
It's just a bunch of people, each with a little goodwill, trying to figure out a way to stop the destruction of the Earth.
When we see the scene where the United States, the Soviet Union, Russia, and China, regardless of their country, come together to plan and build a spaceship to find the answer, it feels more like a fantasy than going into space and meeting aliens, and it even brings a touching feeling.
The same was true for the protagonist, a middle school teacher.
Small actions taken for the future of students become the driving force to save the Earth.
Ultimately, this novel is a story of universal salvation brought about by ordinary, small acts of kindness.
I hope you will experience the dazzling moment of great salvation that begins with simplicity in Project Hail Mary.
And I hope you hear a whisper that your small act of kindness can also become a hero who saves the Earth.

This was a project that took a particularly long time to consider: what new things could we convey to our readers between what is imaginable and what is not?
While the initial preparations focused on making Project Hailmary known as a new work by the same author behind The Martian and Artemis, the subsequent re-covers focused on finding images with cinematic imagination.
This time, we were able to focus our energies on capturing Rocky and Ryland's passionate and thrilling journey in a more dynamic way, free from any external factors.
Finally happiness, happiness, happiness.

There was a scene where I unconsciously held my breath and read with my eyes rolling as fast as the Earth's rotation, and I thought about how I could print that impression on the new cover, and I came up with the keywords 'two worlds' and 'encounter.'
I wanted to create a cover that would be meaningful to both readers who would be reading Project Halemary for the first time with this edition and to those who already love the book, so I debated dozens of times whether or not to include the small silhouette in the center. As a first-time reader and designer, I said, “Don’t include it!” As a fan, I said, “You should!”
But how do you beat a nerd?
As a designer and, more importantly, a Project Hailmary nerd, I worked on this with the hope that it would be a book that I would keep on my bookshelf for a long time.
