A Sparkling Korean Art History Picture Book
Description
Book Introduction
Discover Korean art in a picture book.
How much do you love Korean art? There are countless painters we love, including Kim Hong-do, Jeong Seon, An Gyeon, Shin Saimdang, Kim Myeong-guk, Kim Jeong-hui, Shin Yun-bok, Jang Seung-eop, and even Lee Jung-seob.
And here we have illustrated their beautiful work in a book.
You captured it in a picture? That's right.
The author of this book, Seunghee Ahn, re-illustrated the works of our ancestors and included them in the book.
Most art history books contain photographs of the works, so they feel a bit stiff and cold.
And older works were often faded or damaged.
So, while preserving the charm of the original, I redrawn all the works to make them feel more vivid and to suit a modern sensibility.
As the artist drew each piece, he was able to observe previously unseen intentions and subtle details within the work that he had not noticed before, and he was able to feel the immense power of the culture that his ancestors had achieved.
Let's embark on a journey to a Korean art museum together. Let's begin by imagining ourselves in a museum filled with Korean art.
The flow of art along with history
From the Bangudae petroglyphs of 7,000 years ago, to the crowns and gold ornaments of the Three Kingdoms period, the ceramics and Buddhist paintings of the Goryeo Dynasty, the paintings of the Joseon Dynasty, and even the paintings of Lee Jung-seop of the modern era, we have long created and preserved a shining era of culture.
I tried to capture the long and brilliant history of art in one volume, along with its overall flow.
In the previous work, “Our Cultural Heritage Picture Book: Sparkling Shine,” Korean art pieces were organized by theme, whereas in this book, they are arranged chronologically for easy viewing.
Moreover, while the previous work dealt with all cultural heritages, including paintings, this book examines our entire art history with paintings at the center.
So, from the prehistoric era, when there are not many paintings left, to the Three Kingdoms period, the North-South States period, and the Goryeo Dynasty, representative artifacts were included by era, and the Joseon Dynasty was centered around paintings, followed by cultural heritage.
It is very exciting to encounter the works of art left behind by our ancestors.
It is also a thrilling experience because it takes us back thousands, even hundreds of years.
I hope this book will be a small beginning to your journey through Korean art history.
