Book Introduction
The search for truth among three children struggling with envy, jealousy, friendship, and hatred.

The first work in the creative fairy tale series for elementary school students, [Our School Imagination Library].
The truth behind a sudden accident and complex and subtle emotions swirl around the bamboo forest of Sunlight Elementary School, the only place where children can truly express their innermost feelings.
The children's secret competition to become best friends, their envy and jealousy toward their friends, and their desire to not be alone, all vividly portray the worries and conflicts they experience in relationships with no clear answers, all portrayed with the delicate psychological detail characteristic of author Hwang Ji-young.
The three children, who are wondering how deep the wounds in their hearts are, how deep the scars they have left on someone, and how they can live without hiding them, face all of this at the moment they most want to avoid.
Will the three children be able to find the answers they seek in the bamboo forest of Sunlight Grass?

Into the book
At first, I thought I could get along well with Geon-hee and Min-seol.
I wanted to create an equilateral triangle between us that wasn't biased to either side.
But no matter how hard I tried, it just ended up being a distorted triangle.
Geon-hee obviously disliked Min-seol, and Min-seol obviously disliked Geon-hee.
--- p.

My mom thinks I'll be fine if I just stay quiet.
I am quiet.
Does that mean it's okay? I'm not sure.
--- p.
41

I decided to just think it was an accident.
I was unlucky.
No, I was just lucky, like my mom said.
The doctor said that the skull was completely visible.
If I had hit it a little harder, I might have been hurt worse.
But does that mean it's okay to tell someone who's been injured that they're lucky?
--- p.
52

Yuna seems to be more popular than I thought.
It's good if your friend is popular.
But I don't know why my heart is so twisted.
--- p.
58

As Geon-hee said, there are only a few children who give me a hard time.
If you think about it that way, you might be able to ignore it and live well, but you end up tripping over a few words from the children again.
How long will I have to stagger like this?
--- p.
100

“I, like you, really hated my scars.
But as I thought more carefully about the scar, my thoughts began to change little by little.
What is a scar? And what would happen to a wound if it didn't scar? Think about it.
“Our thoughts may differ.”
--- p.
115

“Just do as much as you can.
No one can blame you.
It took me years to get better too.
“It’s not like it’s completely okay.”
--- p.
137

If I go to school tomorrow, it will still be full of thorns everywhere.
But now I can say it.
It hurts a lot because of the thorns.

Publisher's Review
Hiding 'me' and revealing the real 'me'
Our secret space, 'Sunlight Bamboo Forest'

'Making friends in a new class in a new semester' and 'adapting to a new school' may be exciting and anticipated for some, but for others, the thought of it can be overwhelming and overwhelming, causing them great stress.
Many children suffer from anxiety about adjusting to school, to the point that there is a name for this condition called "new school syndrome," which includes having to go to the bathroom because of a stomachache before going to school, having a headache, and not being able to sleep well.
The same goes for transferring schools.
When they feel like they are not adjusting well to the new school and are feeling left out, they may feel depressed or express anger.
For children who feel that friendships are more important than anything else, adjusting to a new environment and making friends can be incredibly stressful.

The children at Haetbit Elementary School, who are starting a new semester, all have one thing in common: they are transfer students.
This is because the children who moved to the new town transferred to the newly built Haetbit Elementary School.
The children of Sunlight Elementary School have a secret of their own that adults do not know.
The only place where children, each burdened with their own worries and concerns, can honestly express their innermost feelings is the 'Sunlight Bamboo Forest'.
In the anonymous SNS account 'Sunlight Grass Forest' where no one knows who posted the post, some reveal their dark inner feelings, some confess their unrequited love, and some reveal the pain they couldn't tell anyone else.
The same goes for Yuna, who is trying to keep an eye on her new partner, Geon-hee, and Min-seol, who takes after-school classes together.
The three children, unable to honestly express their feelings of resentment and injustice toward each other, visit the bamboo grove in Haetbitcho to pour out their hearts and find comfort.

A mixture of friendship, jealousy and hatred,
The complex and nuanced world of 'Our World'

Yuna, Minseol, and Geonhee are so different.
Yuna, who likes to be the center of attention, is bright and cheerful and makes friends all over the place.
Minseol, who has the hardest time making new friends, is cautious, quiet, and thoughtful.
Minseol envies Yuna, who always seems to shine brightly in her eyes, and wants to be with her all the time, but she tries to suppress the jealousy that rises towards Yuna as they learn Nanta together in an after-school class.
Geon-hee, who believes that his friendships at his previous school were ruined because of his personality, wants to start anew at Haetbit Elementary School as a completely different person.
I am hopeful that if I am careful with my words and actions, and get along well with my partner Yuna, I will be able to get along well with the other kids in my class.
But Minseol, who keeps coming to Yuna even though she's in a different class, is really annoying.
As each person's desires and greed become intertwined, a sudden accident occurs to Yuna, and everything begins to change.

Yuna, who suffered a serious injury from a momentary accident, reads an unexpected text in a bamboo forest.
After reading that Yuna's accident was not a mistake but was caused by someone's malicious intent, Yuna becomes confused.
This huge scar, the hatred directed at her, and the unwelcome attention from children are all new to Yuna.
Yuna, who sets out to find the hidden truth while covering up her scars, is angry at her friends who only see her scars, hates her friends who don't tell her the truth honestly, and is tormented by the rumors surrounding her.
The three children each do what they think is best, but because of this, they leave each other with deep wounds and misunderstandings.
In our world that is becoming a mess, children begin to find answers little by little.
It is a difficult and slow but determined step towards finding answers to the difficult questions of what makes you suffer, what makes you anxious, and what makes you feel pathetic.

It's okay if there are scars
Because we are still beautiful

The bright sunlight has disappeared into the shadows, the surroundings are covered with thorns, and the three children, who thought they had escaped from the mud but now have their feet wet, hide in the bamboo grove without fail.
But the bamboo forest, filled with writings that are not clear whether they are true or false and who is passing them on to whom, is no longer a sanctuary for children.
The children turn their heads away from the bamboo forest, which was special and precious but no longer provides comfort.
And they begin to look into each other's eyes to directly uncover the hidden truth.
And now, instead of hiding her scars, Yuna begins to focus on why she got them and what they mean to her.

As young readers witness these characters grow physically and mentally, confronting deeply wounded accidents, hidden scars, and truths they wish to avoid, they will find themselves deeply moved and empathetic, touching the scars within their own hearts.
Through author Hwang Ji-young's characteristically brilliant insight and delicate psychological descriptions, we peer into the hearts of the characters, and some find joy, some reflect, and others find courage and comfort.
For similar reasons to the three children, children who feel like moments last forever and who struggle and suffer in the relationships surrounding them can also find their own answers.
Realizing that the large scars I have are traces of a beautiful effort to overcome pain.
