I am a flight attendant on a stopped plane.
I am a flight attendant on a stopped plane.
Description
Book Introduction
Do you really have conversations like this with flight attendants?
Does this really happen on airplanes?

A flight attendant whose personal and subjective flight goal is to 'make small talk with at least one passenger.'
I enjoy talking to passengers and engaging in conversation whenever I get the chance.
Some passengers react indifferently, while others open up with excitement, eager to share a little more of what they know.
After the flight, I returned home or to the hotel and wrote down the stories I shared with them and what happened on the flight.
Because I wanted to make the flight a memorable experience through conversations with the passengers.
So, I compiled the stories I had been keeping in my flight log for 10 years into a book.

Some people may not believe the stories in this book.
You might be thinking, "Is this really what happened to the flight attendant? Did this really happen? I've flown countless times, and this has never happened to me."
However, flight attendants who enjoy conversation and realize that talking to passengers is not only helpful for service but also for flight safety, talk to passengers again and again.
When you receive valuable feedback, you can improve it for the next flight, and if you have any touching stories, write them down in your flight log to remember.
Some words were etched in my mind, and some passengers remembered his words for a long time, giving them the strength to continue the flight.
So he became a flight attendant with many stories.

The delightful and touching flight story is told not only in a delicious text but also as a webtoon drawn by the author himself.
Additionally, we have included questions and answers that everyone who uses an airplane may have wondered about at least once in their life as an appendix.
It's full of useful information that will answer your questions, such as why it's so dry and cold on planes and which seats are the best.

Into the book
On the way back to the Tokyo hotel, I bit into a piece of candy.
Red ginseng candy that I have never tried before, even with my own money.
The words my grandmother spoke seemed to echo faintly in the street where the sound of a carrier being pulled echoed.

“First, let’s settle this.
“Do good first, then give back.”
Some people are remembered for the things they said or the stories they told.
The old lady passenger that day remains with me with this line.
I thought for a moment about what I would say to someone in their memory.

---From "That's right, first give it to me"

The passenger finally smiled faintly and said, “It’s pretty.”
Then, suddenly, the plane shook violently, and a passenger who had lost his senses shouted, reaching out to the hair of a male passenger standing above the seat in front of him.

“Ouch! I want to grab this old man’s head!”
The front seat passenger's hair loss was already quite advanced.
I was so surprised that I pushed my head back.

“No! Grab my hair! My hair is longer and easier to hold!”
I blurted it out without even knowing what I was saying, thinking that I shouldn't cause any harm to other passengers.
The passengers next to me burst into laughter, and only then did the embarrassment begin to wash over me.

---From "We Support Each Other"

A new domestic airline announced its intention to avoid sexual commercialization and focus on safety by introducing genderless uniforms in 2020.
In 2019, British Airways removed its rule requiring cabin crew to wear makeup.
And one domestic airline I interviewed with still requires applicants to wear their skirt uniforms during the final interview and hold them to the same standards.
After putting on my uniform and approaching the interviewers at their request, I approached them half an arm's length away and stood there blankly. I felt that they were evaluating me based on my body, not my thoughts and will.

---From "The Inescapable Swamp of the 'Flight Attendant Image'"

Those of us who work on the front lines of service have developed a resilience that is unfazed by any noise.
In order to sleep well and go to work the next day, and to live like a human being, I have to learn the skill of ignoring and covering up the verbal abuse rather than focusing on it.
Even so, “Kneel down.
No one is completely okay with something like, “Next time I’ll come looking for you with a knife.”
Even though I've learned how to properly deal with and respond to situations where customers are going wild, my heart still feels cold whenever I hear words that threaten my safety.
When the expression on your face disappears due to the cruelty that seems to cut into your heart, it becomes an excuse to listen to more verbal abuse.
That person doesn't know.
How scared and lonely we are.
How overwhelming it is to feel the unreachable distance.
How stiff you actually are to show a consistent smile.
It can be like that because you don't know.
Because I don't know.
Because you don't even want to know.

Publisher's Review
Some people may not believe the stories in this book.

There are joys and sorrows everywhere in life, but the space called an airplane has a special corner.
While the plane takes off and flies, the flight attendants have to stay with the passengers, and because of the nature of the service industry, they meet a variety of people, so it is a bit more dramatic.
If a life-threatening patient is encountered, you may have to return to your starting point or land somewhere other than your destination, and the relief of saving someone's life may be fleeting, followed by the raw reactions of people whose schedules have been disrupted.
In such a situation, some people are gentlemanly, while others protest harshly, spewing unspeakable harshness.
Of course, this isn't the only thing that happens.
They spend hours in the same space, exchanging warm words and worrying about each other's safety as they build a bond.
The stories that unfold on the plane sometimes make my heart ache, sometimes bring tears to my eyes, and other times make me laugh out loud as if nothing had happened.

About jobs that require you to take care of your appearance

The word 'flight attendant' is often associated with the expression 'appearance'.
Even in interview preparation, appearance management plays a large role, and that is why related departments at universities do not hesitate to point out appearance.
As we focus on appearance, the work environment becomes worse.
Uniforms are designed to look good rather than be comfortable and practical, and after a long flight wearing shoes, your feet are bound to swell.
Airlines have appearance and dress codes, so you must always wear nail polish and style your hair in a certain way.
In this environment, can we really afford to pay enough attention to ensuring passengers' comfort and safety?

The author emphasizes that current and former flight attendants should speak up not only for themselves but also for their juniors and trainees who will work with them in the future, and discusses what is more important than maintaining one's appearance.
