Walden, the masterpiece of Henry David Thoreau, the great 19th-century American writer and thinker, is an immortal classic that increases in value over time and constantly awakens new ideas in readers around the world.
Although numerous translations have been published in Korea, the 2011 revised edition of Walden, translated by Kang Seung-young, is renowned as the best-selling translation.


Since its first publication in 1993, Walden has sold approximately 300,000 copies in Korea.
Translator Kang Seung-young has been exchanging emails with American Thoreau scholars since about six years ago to create what could be called the "definitive edition" as his "last work in life." He revised about 400 words and sentences that were not corrected in the previous revised second edition, leading to this revised third edition.

Although Thoreau graduated from Harvard University, he did not have a stable job and preferred to make a living through honest physical labor such as surveying or carpentry.
This book is the product of two years of attempts to live a simple, self-sufficient life, building a log cabin and cultivating a field in the woods near Walden Pond in 1845.
It is a celebration of Mother Nature, a sharp critique of civilized society, and a declaration of independence for an independent human being who refuses to be bound by anything.


Walden, first published in the United States in 1852, did not attract much attention at the time, but today it is considered one of the most important books written in the 19th century and is read and loved by many readers around the world.
It has inspired many people, including the Indian saint Mahatma Gandhi, the American poet Robert Frost, and even the Korean monk Beopjeong and Mr. Hanbiya, while also providing the joy of reading.
