Cowardly Billy
Cowardly Billy
Description
Book Introduction
Billy is a very anxious child.
What if my shoes walk out the window? What if a big bird snatches me away? What if a heavy rain falls and floods the room? Billy's world is filled with worries.
Mom and Dad try to help, but it's no use.
One day, Billy ends up sleeping over at his grandmother's house, and although he feels a bit foolish, he tells his grandmother about his worries.
Then, the grandmother went into the room and came out with something...

British picture book master Anthony Browne, who has twice won the Kate Greenaway Medal, the UK's top picture book award, has created a new book, 'Worried Billy', which cutely depicts a child's anxious psychology, imagination, and consideration for objects, using worry dolls, a traditional toy handed down by the Guatemalan Indians in Central America, as a subject.
Anthony Browne, who knows how to infuse his unique humor into delicate and realistic illustrations, captures children's boundless imagination and innocence in this colorful and splendid book in a serious yet cheerful way.
The overly serious expressions that are unusual for a child, or the anxious expressions with such absurd worries, somehow make you laugh.

Publisher's Review
No more worries if you have a worry doll!
Billy is a very worried child.
What if my shoes walk out the window and run away? What if a big bird snatches me away? What if a heavy rain falls and the room floods... Billy's world is filled with worries.
Mom and Dad try to help, but it's no use.
When I sleep in someone else's house, my worries get worse.
I can't even breathe a wink.
One day, Billy ends up sleeping over at his grandmother's house, and although he feels a bit foolish, he tells his grandmother about his worries.
Then the grandmother goes into the room and comes out with something.
They are little worry dolls dressed in colorful clothes.
Thanks to those dolls, Billy can sleep soundly for days without worry.
But one day, Billy starts to worry again.
This time, it was the worry dolls that were worried.
So Billy decides to make worry dolls for the worry dolls… … .

For children with rich imaginations who cannot distinguish between dreams and reality, the world may be an unknown space full of worries.
These are absurd and ridiculous worries for adults, but for children, they are a reality that causes endless fear and anxiety.
Saying it's just imagination never helps.
In this book, the grandmother accepts and embraces Billy's emotions as they are, and helps ease Billy's worries through a worry doll that has been passed down for a long time.
Just like my grandmother's grandmother used to do.
But the story doesn't end here.
The author, who has shown insight that penetrates the childlike innocence with a unique and cheerful imagination, demonstrates that ability without fail in this work as well.
It is Billy's cute, childlike idea to create worry dolls for worry dolls, out of concern for the worry dolls that have taken on all of his worries.
Furthermore, by showing that it was Billy himself who ultimately solved the problem, the author demonstrates his belief that children have the power and ability to solve their own problems.

Childlike innocence hidden in a colorful and splendid painting
The entire book is bright and cheerful, like a worry doll's clothes.
However, scenes where Billy is worried and anxious are depicted in black and white or dark and murky colors to vividly convey the child's anxious mind and psychology.
Billy's facial expressions change in various ways depending on his psychological changes, making it realistic enough for even children who cannot read to follow the story just by looking at the pictures.
Also, the scenes where the worry dolls are personified and made to smile and frown along with Billy, and where each doll is given a name, perfectly capture the characteristics and feelings of children.
This book, which is based on the fun custom of telling your worries to a worry doll before going to bed and having the doll make them disappear, will become a precious bedtime friend for children, just like a worry doll.
If you look closely, you can see that the book cover has the same pattern as the clothes of the worry dolls in the text.
