O you who have great ambitions, why do you remain in that place?
Description
Book Introduction
Dasan Jeong Yak-yong was exiled at the age of forty for religious and political reasons without any major fault.
Because he had lived more faithfully than anyone else, he may have felt that heaven was blocking his way.
So he had to live in exile in Gangjin for a full 18 years, and was only able to return to the world when he was 57 years old.
However, instead of lamenting his fate during that long period of time, Jeong Yak-yong wrote numerous Silhak books, including “Mokminsimseo” and “Gyeongse Yubyo.”
He wrote over 2,400 volumes of documents using only brush, ink, and Korean paper.
Looking at him like that, I think that the reason we can't achieve our dreams today is not because we lack ability, but perhaps because we lack the will and perseverance to achieve them.
Reading his writings, it's hard to believe he was written 200 years ago. He asks questions that are essential to our lives today and offers poignant advice.
“Treat the people as heaven.”
“Learning is of no use unless it is put to practical use.”
“It is right to do everything yourself, and if you rely on others, things will go awry.”
At first glance, it might sound like nagging.
But if we pay just a little attention, we will see that his words contain the fundamentals we need to live our lives.
From his attitude of putting people first, his attitude of prioritizing actions over words, to his profound insight into how we should approach life, Dasan's words go beyond mere advice from the past; they contain a philosophy essential for living today.
This book begins with Jeong Yak-yong's words and is filled with writings that unravel our current concerns and thoughts.
Reading a book won't change your life overnight, but it can at least change the way you look at life.
And I believe that change will definitely lead you to become a better person.
