Into the book
I think we need to get rid of the complex of reading too many books.
I hope we can move beyond boasting about how many books we've read this year.
Even if you read five books a year, it seems important to see how many parts you underline.
The underlined sentences are sentences that give 'resonance'.
I think what matters is whether or not there is that resonance, not how many books you read.
--- p.33

Before reading Kim Hoon, I couldn't see the cornelian cherry.
Now, each and every dogwood tree is visible.
(...) Alain de Botton once told me that Oscar Wilde was like me.
Oscar Wilde said this after seeing Whistler's wonderful fog paintings.
“Before Whistler painted fog, there was no fog in London.”
Humanistic elements such as books, paintings, and music give us new senses.

--- p.74

Alain de Botton breaks down the thoughts, feelings, words and actions we have when we are in love.
It's a great insight into why Lee falls in love, why he acts in a certain way when he's in love, and why he gets tired of the other person over time.

--- p.102

The sentences in 『The Stranger』 are independent.
(...) does not borrow the present from the past and does not guarantee the future.
It fits in with the existential attitude towards life.
Sartre praises the book's greatness for having adopted the same format for conveying such content.
“Each sentence refuses to use the strength it has already acquired from the preceding sentences; each sentence is always a new beginning.”
--- p.188-189

The book, "The Unbearable Lightness of Being," made me think about so many things.
And it's a book that will make you discover something new every time you read it.
(...) The reason I wanted to talk about this book is because I wanted you to feel the infinite universe contained in one book.
The weight of emotion that comes from a novel that encompasses sex and love, politics and history, theology and philosophy is by no means light.
Finally, if I had to choose just one genre from the many that permeate this novel, I would say it's a romance novel with a beautiful love story.

--- p.251-252

All life is unanswered.
There is no life that is not like that.
No matter how long I live, I never know exactly how I feel when I first find myself in a situation.
Is this love? Is it jealousy? Is it hate? Is it justice? After reading this book, Anna Karenina, it may not be perfect, but at least you won't get lost.
The countless stories centered around a woman who falls in love with a man other than her husband, like a map with every alleyway marked in detail, show the universal human psyche with brutal accuracy.

--- p.264

In order for enlightenment not to end as enlightenment, we must continue to remember, reflect on, and practice that enlightenment throughout our lives.
I think the best way to do that is through books.
Of course, it has to be a good book.
We have a positive bias toward books, a bias that all books are good.
But there are many articles that are a waste of time reading.
I think that in order to live a life of merit and constantly earn money, you need to find good books that will give you enlightenment and read them.
--- p.332

Compassionate study and good study mind.
It means to enjoy learning, think deeply, and understand the meaning with your heart.
I think that if we raise our antennas high and open all our tentacles, we can enjoy a rich and happy life, not just with books.
Happiness is right before your eyes.
On a rainy day, I have two choices.
One is to get annoyed when you see the pouring rain, and the other is to feel the joy of life when you see the ginkgo leaves rising fresh after being hit by the rain.
Happiness is a choice.

Publisher's Review
Discovered through Park Woong-hyun's unique method of looking into
The 'axes' of our time that shatter frozen sensibilities.

The Stranger, Zorba the Greek, The Unbearable Lightness of Being
"Why Do I Love You?" "Anna Karenina" "The Picture of Dorian Gray" ...

Meet the works that resonated with Park Woong-hyun, Korea's leading advertising figure.

This is a revised edition of the bestseller and steady seller, “Books are Axes,” which was first published in 2011 and sold over 400,000 copies.
Park Woong-hyun, an advertising figure who has established his own unique style by creating value-oriented advertisements such as 'Ties and Jeans are Equal', 'Age is Just a Number', 'Facing People', 'Sincerity Builds', and 'Thoughts are Energy'.
He says.
In the advertising world, a battlefield of creativity, the foundation of my 30 years of experience in creating advertisements was the humanities, and at the center of it all was 'books'.
He said that the sharpened sense of touch he gained through reading books helped him in his career.
"Books are Axes" is a humanities book in which the author introduces books that are now considered classics and that awakened his creativity and sensibility.
In this book, the author introduces books of various genres, including poetry, novels, essays, science books, art history books, and commentaries on scriptures, thereby guiding readers into the world of literature, philosophy, science, and art in an easy and interesting way.

“Why do you read books? Because after reading, you change.

“You will see more and your life will be enriched.”

Author Park Woong-hyun said that reading books has been the foundation of his career as an advertiser, but he also confesses that, more than anything, it has enriched and enriched his life.
He says that through the works of writers who influenced him, such as Jean Grenier, Albert Camus, Nikos Kazantzakis, Leo Tolstoy, Alain de Botton, Kim Hoon, Lee Cheol-su, Kim Hwa-young, Son Cheol-ju, Oh Ju-seok, and the monk Beopjeong, he developed a perspective that allowed him to look at everyday moments in a special way, and that this perspective fostered his creativity and allowed him to pay attention to each and every moment of life.
As we read through the author's numerous works, along with the beautiful sentences, we can feel our dulled senses and perspectives being awakened and expanded.

“The books I read were my axe.
An axe that breaks my frozen emotions and awakens my sleeping cells.
The axe marks left a vivid mark in my mind.
How could it be? The sound of ice breaking, the sound that resonated with each line I read.” (From the author's words, "Sharing Echoes")

I don't understand, I don't care.
Don't just look and listen, look and listen deeply

The author says that it is not important to read 'a lot' of books, but to read 'deeply' even if you only read one book.
In addition, I introduce my own reading method of underlining the parts that I liked or was moved by while reading a book, and organizing the underlined sentences separately again.
However, he does not force his own reading method on the readers.
We encourage readers to find books that resonate with them and develop their own reading methods.
He says that slowly looking into what resonates with me, listening to everyday things that seem insignificant, are the seeds of creativity.

“Ultimately, the basis of creativity and ideas is ‘daily life.’
(…) The answer lies in everyday life.
Everything is talking to me.
But most people don't want to listen.
If anyone has the heart to listen, that person is a creative person.
In a two-hour lecture, I have nothing to teach from one book.
I just hope that the seed is planted within you.
So I hope each of you can find out what resonates with you.”

The records of "Books are Axes," built on the love and support of readers.

The media's praise for "Books are Axes"!

When reading a book, the author's unique reading method of 'reading each sentence carefully' is impressive.
It makes you open the books you have put on the shelf again and makes you decide to buy the books you have not read.
All of this is the result of the author's keen sense of touch as a copywriter.

While most books about books emphasize reading a lot and reading a variety of books, 『Books are an Axe』 emphasizes that 'reading deeply' is much more important, even if you only read a few books.
The author states that the ultimate goal of reading is a "rich life," and suggests that no matter what book you read, you should look deeply and feel it so that you can feel the resonance contained within.
This is an extremely interesting book for those who want to steal the skills and sensibilities of a great advertiser.
_〈Hankyoreh〉

"Books are an Axe" is a book in which the author, who represents the Korean advertising industry and has established himself as an "icon of creativity," introduces books that awakened his creativity.
If we compare creativity and the spread of ideas to antennas, this book persuasively conveys that 'deep reading' is a way to have a good antenna that can catch the numerous ideas around us.
_ 〈Kyunghyang Shinmun〉

This book, which helped make the humanities more accessible to the general public, is still relevant six years after its publication.
