Description
Book Introduction
Tokyo University's Doctor of Buddhist Philosophy, Appears on SBS's "Big Question"
The wisdom of Buddha conveyed by Professor Jeong Sang-gyo!

It's a world overflowing with good words, wonderful sentences, and touching quotes.
But why should we read the words of the Buddha, left behind 2,500 years ago, now? Because his teachings contain the most "realistic" mindset for achieving happiness.
The author of this book, Professor Jeong Sang-gyo, is an authority on Indian Buddhism who received a doctorate in Buddhist philosophy from the University of Tokyo. He is also a leading scholar who has been interpreting Buddhism in the language of life through various public lectures, including SBS's "Big Question" and Buddhist Broadcasting.
For the past 20 years, he has been studying and translating Buddhist scriptures, and at the same time, he has constantly been thinking about how to convey the teachings more easily and accurately to today's readers.
And this book is like the fruit of that research.

The Buddha's theory of happiness contained in this book does not rely on God, nor does it cover up pain with vague optimism, nor does it postpone the present while dreaming of an unknown afterlife.
All I can do is live a little better in this present situation, in the reality I face.
This is because the Buddha long ago realized that true peace in life will not come if we ignore reality or rely on baseless beliefs because the situation we are in now is painful.
So, Buddha's words do not remain as mere comfort with good colors.
It talks about our realistic lives, where we sometimes shake, fall, and get hurt, but eventually get back up again, and quietly cheers for that life.

Into the book
The reason we become frustrated, weak, doubtful, and tearful is because clouds have temporarily obscured the sun that is 'me', but our shining nature is always there.
--- p.18

When you find yourself being dragged around by social relationships, think of a jewel that has fallen on the road.
Everyone will compete and fight to pick up that jewel.
The same goes for relationships between people.
If I were a jewel in my field, I wouldn't have to worry about such gatherings and relationships.
Because jewels shine on their own, their light is visible from a distance.

--- p.23

Buddha said that a person is made by his actions through effort, not by his innate status.
Even if you are born into the most sacred and noble family, if your actions are lowly, you will become a lowly person. Even if you are born into a lowly family, if your actions are noble, you will become a noble person.

--- p.40

All beings in this world depend on each other.
The same goes for our emotions.
Sorrow exists because there is joy, and joy is known when one tastes sorrow.
Yet, we always strive to push away sadness and pursue happiness in order to experience only joy.
--- p.70

You can have anything, but you must realize that it is not yours forever.
All I have is just something I borrow for a little while.
If you are obsessed with possessions, your mind will always feel heavy and dizzy even if you have little. However, if you are free from the obsession with possessions, your mind will be lighter than a feather no matter how much you have.
--- p.103

Anyone who applies one standard absolutely to everyone, at all times, is not upright, but foolish.
All standards should be applied flexibly according to the situation, time, and person.

--- p.119

A fool who thinks he is wise will only become the most foolish of all.
Only those who recognize and acknowledge their own shortcomings will have the freedom to listen to, embrace, and accept the opinions of others.
Paradoxically, a person who thinks he is foolish can be wiser than anyone else.

--- p.189

If you think about it a little, it's common sense, but there are many people who are easily fooled by sweet talk.
It's inside me
It is because of the greed that is taking root in .
In short, the reason we must look into our own minds and study how they work is not simply to have a peaceful mind.
It's to protect me.
Only those who know their desires and know how to manage them will not be easily swayed by empty words and will not step into obvious traps.

Publisher's Review
A masterpiece by Professor Jeong Sang-gyo, who has studied only Buddha for 20 years!

Professor Jeong Sang-gyo of the Department of Buddhist Studies at Geumgang University, who has been directly translating and studying Buddhist scriptures for 20 years and conveying the Buddha's teachings to the public, has long harbored one regret in his heart.
Buddhism is a religion and a discipline that talks about the most 'realistic way' to pursue happiness, but it has not been able to get close to the public.
Most Buddhist books on the market either stick to familiar and obvious moral statements like “live well” and “love others,” or are filled with difficult Chinese characters and concepts, making them difficult for the average reader to understand.

So, Professor Jeong Sang-gyo made a new attempt in this book.
I have carefully selected 100 core teachings from the vast scriptures studied over 20 years, quoted them directly, and explained them in 'everyday language' that anyone can understand.
This also follows the Buddha's teachings:
“The truth I preach is meant to save as many lives as possible, so I must preach it in simpler terms so that anyone, whether well-educated or not, can easily understand it.” Just as Buddha said, this book will be a friendly guide for those who were unfamiliar with Buddhism, and for those who were interested in Buddhism but found it difficult, it will be an opportunity to see Buddhism in a new light.

Only I can save my life

When the Buddha was at the end of his life, his disciples asked him who they should follow after the death of their teacher.
“Be your own light.” It meant to move forward with confidence in your own strength and without relying on anyone else.
Why did he, instead of appointing a successor, tell his disciples to go forward and reveal themselves? Because he never doubted that within each person lies the power to navigate their own lives.
Neither blind optimism nor hope for an unknown afterlife can solve the problems I face now.
We are just real beings who must navigate the dark night by relying on our own light.
And the teachings that Buddha left behind 2,500 years ago help us to move forward on the path of life without giving up.
If your life is wavering right now, let us engrave the Buddha's teachings contained in this book one by one into our hearts.
This book will help you realize the power that already exists within you.

Don't let the noise of the world disturb me.

What Buddha ultimately emphasized was the ‘power of the mind.’
If my mind is clear and quiet, no noise in this world can disturb me, he declared.
We, living in modern times, are constantly shaken by numerous stimuli.
The age of hyperconnectivity has forced us to constantly compare ourselves to the rest of the world, and the resulting emotions like anger, anxiety, and regret have seeped deep into our hearts.
Professor Jeong Sang-gyo likens this state of mind to “a lake without a black inkwell.”
The original calm and clear lake of the mind became clouded by the black ink of comparison, and because of this, we are always in pain.

“Even if you break a thousand times, you are still the sea” is a book that slowly but surely clears the turbid waters of the heart.
By following the Buddha's teachings, you can discover the true nature of your emotions, which spread like ink, and learn how to manage them.
When your mind becomes clear, your life changes.
Decisions become lighter, regrets decrease, and the blurry image of 'me' begins to become clearer.
This book will be the starting point for that change.
