Book Introduction
The definitive study of Romans, solved with 33 questions!
“The gospel is not a mere doctrine or knowledge,
We will encounter a living power that will transform our lives.”
Recommended by Kang Young-an, Yoo Ki-seong, Lee Jae-hoon, and Jeong Gap-shin

A gospel class on Romans by Pastor Inho Lee of the Church of More Love, who has poured his passion into spreading the warmth of the gospel.
The author believes that the difficulties facing the Korean church today lie not elsewhere, but in "ignorance of the gospel." Knowing that the only alternative for this age is Jesus Christ, the author has emphasized that we must not stop at simply knowing the gospel, but "shape our own lives and build churches" with the gospel.

The gospel is the answer to the problem of sin and the good news of the grace that God has accomplished for us.
The gospel is complete and makes us obedient.
However, many believers still experience the problem of sin and live a life of faith without knowing the grace and purpose of the gospel.
Feeling regretful about this, the author explains the book of Romans, the essence of the gospel, explaining what the gospel is, how we can enjoy it, and how the gospel fundamentally changes our lives.
I earnestly hope that the Korean church and believers who do not know the gospel and cannot embody it will be restored.

This book is a culmination of evangelical answers found by listening to the questions of the saints.
The author uses the book of Romans to answer 33 questions from believers about sin, judgment, faith, the Holy Spirit, and evangelism, such as, "Do I need to hear the gospel again even though I've believed for a long time?", "If we're all sinners, who will be saved?", and "Why do I, as God's children, suffer?"
While faithfully interpreting the Bible's text, which contains amazing secrets, it goes beyond simple commentary and includes practical applications that help people experience the gospel.

Additionally, each chapter includes 'Questions for Discussion and Application' to help the community gather and study the gospel.
This book, which conveys the potentially difficult meaning of the gospel in a simple and profound way from the perspective of the saints, will help resolve questions about sin, salvation, and the gospel and correct misunderstandings.
This single volume, the definitive study of Romans, will help you fully understand the core of the gospel and vividly experience the gospel that believers and the Korean church had vaguely known, but had failed to realize its value and thus failed to live out in their lives.

Into the book
Let me briefly introduce what I want to emphasize to the saints and readers of this book through the gospel of Romans.

First, the gospel is the answer to the problem of sin.
(…) Second, the gospel is the news of grace.
(…) Third, the completeness of the gospel.
(…) Fourth, the gospel of Romans is ultimately the gospel of the body, that is, the gospel of obedience.
(…)
The misery of the church in this age lies in its departure from this gospel.
We must return to the gospel.
We must know the gospel deeply and spread this gospel.
That is the only way to save this world from destruction.
--- From the "Preface"

Paul wants to preach the gospel to the Roman saints who have already heard the gospel, been saved by it, and have a reputation for having good faith (Romans 1:8).
“Therefore I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome” (Romans 1:15).
Why do they need to hear the gospel again? Fundamentally, the gospel, when proclaimed repeatedly, creates a living faith in the heart.
I preach and teach the gospel repeatedly.
In doing so, I experience that the life in which Christ lives in my heart every day is ultimately due to the repeated proclamation of the gospel.
The gospel lives and works in the hearts of believers as it is repeatedly heard and proclaimed to us.

--- p.32

The gospel is not something that is forced upon us from the outside.
God promised Israel that He would personally circumcise their hearts.
“The Lord your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your descendants, to love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, that you may live” (Deut. 30:6).
When God circumcises their hearts, they will love and obey Him.
That is the promise of the new covenant.
Who performs the circumcision of the heart, removing the hardened heart and giving a new heart? It is Jesus Christ.

--- p.91

Jesus was perfect and at the same time sinless, obeying all the laws.
God crucified Him to death as the price for our sins.
We deserve to die as the price for our sins, but you paid the price by crucifying your son in our place.
The cross is the event in which God paid the price on our behalf.
When Jesus died, he said, “It is finished” (John 19:30), which is the Greek word ‘tetelestai’, meaning ‘it is all paid.’

--- p.107

You know the grace of God who has declared you righteous, but do you feel unworthy of wearing the garments of righteousness? There's something we must remember first.
The redemption of the cross is that it reveals God's love and justice.
Who paid the price of redemption and to whom? It was God who had to pay the wages of sin.
But the one who paid that price was God.
Why didn't you just accept it and close your eyes? Why did you pay the price yourself by killing your own son? Because God is just.
--- p.114

The important thing is that we, like Abraham, possessed a faith that was utterly unbelievable to reason.
We, like Abraham, believe in the God who resurrected Jesus.
I believe in the death and resurrection of Christ.
This faith is not of ourselves; it is the gift of God.
When we believe in Jesus, the gene of faith that our ancestor Abraham had is given to us in Christ.
Don't worry that your faith will be shaken.
We are those who believe in resurrection like Abraham because we have the same gene of faith as Abraham.

--- p.150

Here we discover three very important principles for overcoming sin.
First, it is to consider yourself a new person from an old person.
We must live a life in which we consider ourselves dead to sin and the lusts of the flesh, yet alive to righteousness as servants of God.
Second, we present our sinful bodies to God as instruments of righteousness (Rom 6:13).
When sin comes to us, our whole body must respond.
We must consider our bodies as having been transformed from bodies of sin into bodies of righteousness, and present our bodies of sin to the Lord as weapons of righteousness.
Third, we must change our passion for sin into a zeal for righteousness (Romans 6:19).
Now we must approach God with zeal for righteousness.
We must live according to our existence.
The principle is 'given, given, and worked hard'.

--- p.211

The believer has already won the fight in principle.
But there is still a fight left.
It is about regaining actual control over the body.
In war terms, it's like the difference between D-Day (a victory that has already been decided) and V-Day (total victory).
The Normandy landings marked the Allied victory in World War II.
That day was D-Day.
But a fierce battle was fought to secure complete victory.
There were many casualties as they fought against the enemy who resisted to the end even when the odds were against them.
Our salvation is like this too.
When we believe in Christ, we are already saved.
But the body must also be saved.

--- p.262

The body washed with clear water is the state of our body that believes in Jesus.
The Holy Spirit has finally come into this body.
Whoever believes in Jesus, the Holy Spirit comes.
This is not an ordinary thing.
From this amazing event of the Holy Spirit dwelling within the believer, salvation begins, in which the believer finally overcomes sin and fulfills the requirements of the law.
The indwelling of the Holy Spirit is the core of the gospel that overcomes sin.

--- p.289

The groans of creation, and even of us believers, are not groans of despair.
All things await the day of resurrection when they will be clothed in glorious, immortal, incorruptible, beautiful, and radiant bodies.
We too await the glorious day when we will be revealed as sons and heirs of the kingdom of God.
Therefore we have been saved by hope.
“For we have been saved in hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for who hopes for what he already sees?” (Romans 8:24).

--- p.314

Ultimately, believers are provided with three layers of help.
When suffering comes to believers, the Holy Spirit helps them pray so that God's good will may be accomplished.
Moreover, the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of providence, enables God's firm purpose to unfold in our lives.
And in the Holy Spirit, God's unbreakable love protects us.
God cares for us in this way through three layers.
Let us not doubt God's unchanging love.
