Practicing God's Presence
Description
Book Introduction
A life that repeats itself every day,
My daily life, which feels boring and insignificant,
Does it really make sense?
Here, a message resonates with the harsh souls of modern people, resonating with them even after 300 years.
In the midst of the massive flood of information pouring in from all directions, countless books are introduced to the world every day.
But why now, in the 18th century, in a European monastery, and especially in the life and confession of faith of a lay monk?
The worries of life in a fallen world and the essence that can breathe life into such a soul are consistent across time and space.
For Christians in this age who live in a state of constant anxiety but cannot find even the smallest satisfaction, Brother Lawrence recommends the practice of discovering the loving presence of God that permeates our ordinary days.
Before it is too late, we must learn and practice again how to live a life of loving God, not how to use Him.

Into the book
To be able to give ourselves to God as He desires, we must constantly work at guarding our souls.
Our soul cannot be involved only in spiritual matters; it must inevitably be involved in the affairs of the outer world as well.
However, if we turn our backs on God while revealing our innermost soul to the world, He will not readily answer our cries.
Only when we accept God's help and seek to keep our souls according to His will can we freely enjoy deep fellowship with Him whenever we wish.
--- pp.
20-21
He often pointed out that thoughts can ruin everything.
Evil usually begins in thoughts.
Brother Lawrence said that we must resolutely reject any thought that would lead us away from serving the Lord or destroy our salvation.
He said that only when our hearts are free from such thoughts can we have a loving conversation with God.
Brother Lawrence said that it was never easy.
When he was first saved, he would often spend his prayer time trying to shake off such distracting thoughts, only to soon fall back into them again.
--- p.
30
Brother Lawrence said that our sanctification does not depend on changing our activities from one to another, but on doing them for God and not for ourselves.
The most effective way to communicate with God, as Brother Lawrence discovered, is to simply and consistently go about your ordinary daily life.
He carried out his assigned tasks with a heart of obedience born from pure love for God, and he always tried to offer that love with the purest heart possible for a human being.
--- pp.
40-41
The practice of God's presence applied equally to regular work and daily routines as well as prayer times.
All day long, every hour, every minute, I drove out of my soul everything that tried to separate me from the thought of God.
Since I began my walk with God, that practice has become a daily routine.
Of course, there were many times when the practice faltered and was marred by major mistakes, but I still find great blessings in these processes.
--- p.
93
Those who long for union with God must realize the following:
That is, just because something seems right to you and you like it, you should not think that it will bring you closer to God.
Sometimes, it may be good to let go of even the world's sense of will in order to focus solely on God.
If our will has any way of understanding God, it is only through love.
But because that love aims at God, it will be hindered by the things of this world.
--- p.
121
From the time he began his life as a lay monk in a monastery, prayer became especially important to him.
Whether he had much to do or little, he never reduced his prayer time.
As a result, he became a person who reminded everyone of God's presence and love, and he became a role model for his fellow monks in the monastery.
Although the work he was given was the most menial, he never complained.
Even when he did things he did not like or found tiring, the grace of Jesus Christ protected him.
--- pp.
144-145
You don't have to do big things in life.
I flip even one small egg in a frying pan with love for God.
When that work is done and there is nothing more to do, I lie down on the floor and worship God.
It is also because of the grace He gives that I can do that.
And when I wake up, I feel more satisfied than any king in the world.
Even if I can't do anything, I will be content if I can just pick up a single speck of dust from the floor with my love for God.
--- p.
149
Although he lived a simple and ordinary life in the monastery, he did not pretend to be pious or always put on a sullen air.
Things like that only make people reluctant to go.
Rather, he treated everyone warmly as brothers, and his fellow investigators as friends, never giving the impression that he was in the least different from them.
He never took God's grace for granted, nor did he flaunt his virtues in the hope of gaining respect, but rather sought to live a hidden, concealed life.
Although he was a truly humble man, he never sought the glory of humility, but only humility itself.
He wanted no one but God to testify about his actions.
The only superior he looked to was God alone.
--- pp.
155-156
To him, everything, everywhere, and everything was the same.
This good brother found God everywhere, at all times, whether he was attending prayer meetings or repairing shoes.
There was no need to be particularly anxious about taking a break.
Because he found the same God whom he was to love and worship not only in the remote wilderness but also in the most ordinary of everyday things.
Brother Lawrence's only means of approaching God was to do everything with a heart of love for God.
So he didn't care what he would do.
What mattered to him was that he did the work given to him for God.
What he valued was not activity, but ‘God.’

Publisher's Review
Practice God's presence often
Hear from Brother Lawrence, who experienced it intimately.
The essence of spiritual life
Born in France, he was eighteen years old when, one winter day, he was looking at a tree and was seized by the living God.
Afterwards, he worked as a servant of the monastery's accountant, participated in the war, was injured, became disabled in his legs, and went through many ups and downs in his life. Finally, he entered the Carmelite Order and lived his life as a lay brother.
"Practicing the Presence of God" is a spiritual insight that Brother Lawrence realized while living there and learning about God's heart.
Brother Lawrence lived fully in the deep presence of God, breathing every moment, even while doing chores in the kitchen or repairing shoes in the monastery.
His example of life had a greater impact on people than his words.
This book invites us to enjoy the blessing of walking intimately with God by practicing "God's presence" in the monotonous and arduous daily life of this world.
A classic among classics read by all generations!
Illustrations that add depth and understanding to the content,
A new hardcover book that is perfect for keeping and reading for a long time!
The book is divided into four parts.
Part 1 is a collection of conversations between Brother Lawrence and the Abbot of Beaufort, a close friend of Brother Lawrence; Part 2 is a collection of letters written by Brother Lawrence to others; Part 3 is a collection of Brother Lawrence's exhortations on spiritual life; and Part 4 is a brief account of Brother Lawrence's life, written and published by the Abbot of Beaufort shortly after Brother Lawrence's death.
This book encourages those who live helplessly, relying on communal spirituality, hidden within the vast society or church, to live with God in their daily lives. It also awakens believers who live with different faces inside and outside the church to offer true worship in all aspects of their lives.
Inspiring illustrations have been added to make the message of Brother Lawrence more approachable, and the book is bound in hardcover for easy reading.
It will be a great gift to give to your loved ones or to yourself.
