Community life of saints
Description
Book Introduction
Blessed, who published the most authoritative biography on Dietrich Bonhoeffer, “Dietrich Bonhoeffer: Theologian-Christian-Contemporary,” in 2014, has now published three volumes of “Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s Masterpieces,” which contain the life and theology of Bonhoeffer in their entirety. These three books have already been translated and introduced in Korea, but while thinking, "Shouldn't there be a translation that is more accessible to readers?", they are now being published with a new translation and cover. Based on the first edition (original German text) published during Bonhoeffer's lifetime and immediately after his death, you can experience the true spirit of Bonhoeffer, and through the beautiful and dynamic translation by translators who have been translating Bonhoeffer-related works for a long time, you can vividly encounter Bonhoeffer's life and theology. This book will be a valuable gift not only to those who wish to delve deeply into the life and theology of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, but also to all Christians who are struggling to live a truly Christian life. |

Into the book
Christians must spend a lot of time each day alone in non-Christian environments.
This time is a time of verification.
This is also a time to test whether our time of meditation is genuine and whether our community is genuine.
Has the community contributed to the individual becoming a free, strong, and mature believer, or has it made him insecure and dependent? Has the community provided a temporary hand to help him find his own way, or has it turned him into a fearful and anxious person? This is the most serious and crucial question facing every Christian community.
Did his time of meditation allow him to briefly lapse into a state of spiritual ecstasy that would soon fade once he returned to his daily routine? Or did God's Word sink so clearly and deeply into his heart that it sustained and strengthened him throughout the day, moving him to love, obedience, and good deeds? Only that day can tell the truth.
---From Chapter 3, “A Day Alone”
In confession of sin, a breakthrough to the cross is made.
The root of all sin is pride.
It is arrogance to claim that I want to exist for myself, that I have a right to myself, to do as I please with my hatred or desires, with my life and death.
The human spirit and body are burning with pride.
Because, in his sin, man wants to become like God.
Confession of sins before one's brothers is the deepest humility.
Confession of sins hurts me and makes me feel small.
Confession of sin strikes down pride so fiercely that it breaks down.
It is truly an unbearable humiliation to stand before one's brothers as a sinner.
But in the process of confessing sins specifically, the old man is put to a painful and shameful death before the eyes of his brothers.
Because this humiliating humiliation is so difficult, we often think we can avoid confessing our sins to our brothers.
Because our eyes are so darkened, we can no longer see the promise and glory that lies in such humiliation.

We are very pleased to publish new translations of Bonhoeffer's three books: The Community Life of the Saints, Follow Me, and Letters from Prison: Resistance and Obedience.
From the perspective of the power of their messages, the radicality and thoroughness with which they delve into the very roots of the Christian faith, and the intensity with which Bonhoeffer grapples with the root, these three books will overwhelm, astonish, and compel us to kneel before Jesus Christ.
So, what is the significance of rereading Bonhoeffer anew, with a new translation, given the circumstances facing the Korean church today? I believe that three fundamental circumstances facing the Korean church make rereading Bonhoeffer an inevitable task.
First and foremost, the Korean church is more deeply entrenched in capitalism than any other church in any other era or region.
Today, the Korean church has become subservient to a capitalist system where competition with others has become a way of life, money is the master, desires and wants have become the driving force of life, and the values that govern life are greater than small, quantity over quality, and transaction over giving or sharing.
There is no room for community here, and there is no hope for discipleship following Jesus.
The grace we receive through Jesus Christ is easily distributed, traded, and consumed cheaply.
Bonhoeffer's writings starkly expose and rebuke the reality of the Korean church, and show us the way to restore Jesus Christ in our lives.
This is why I believe Bonhoeffer should be read by Christians on this earth today who wish to become true Christians.
The second problem with the Korean church is that it does not know how to live with people of different ideologies, religions, and lifestyles.
Christians have somehow developed a lifestyle that is extremely exclusive to anything other than Christianity, especially to religions other than Christianity.
In this situation, I believe that through Bonhoeffer, we can learn a new attitude toward life, thought, religion, and culture that is thoroughly Christ-centered.
I believe we should read Bonhoeffer again, because through him we can learn how to see, discern, accept, and enjoy the world's scholarship, art, and religion in Christ, who redeems and restores all things.
As a third problem of the Korean church, I would like to point out the ‘practical atheism’ that is rampant within the church.
Our problem is that we acknowledge the existence of God with our mouths and words, worship Him, and preach the gospel, but our actions do not bear much fruit in our lives.
They were criticized by non-believers as being 'selfish', 'exclusive', and 'selfish'.
The reality of the Korean church today is that it produces countless atheists who are said to be theists in name only.
I believe we need to reread Bonhoeffer because we think about these realities of life together with him and believe we can overcome them together with him.
