Me and you
Description
Book Introduction
A world-renowned textbook and a living classic of our time.
This is Martin Buber's representative work, which had a great influence not only on theology but also on culture as a whole due to its insight into human nature.
In this book, Buber argues that there are two relationships in the world: the 'I and Thou' (Ich-Du) relationship and the 'I and It' (Ich-Es) relationship, and that in order to live a true life, we must establish an 'I and Thou' relationship.
He diagnoses that the modern tragedy of losing human value and dignity is due to the loss of true relationships and dialogue between people, and says that encounters and dialogue are the most fundamental aspects of human life.
In today's world, where true relationships and dialogue have been lost, Buber's "I and Thou" will awaken us to the true value of life.

Into the book
Buber is a thinker who has touched on almost every aspect of our culture.
That is why, to fully understand his thoughts, one has no choice but to read his numerous writings one by one.
However, all of his works have their origins in this pamphlet, “Me and You,” in the development of his ideas.
You could say that "Me and You" serves as a water source for his other works.
"Me and You" should be viewed as a kind of philosophical prose poem rather than a thesis.
Here, familiar, everyday vocabulary, embracing a flickering inspiration, is repeated over and over again, drawing us into a world of profound philosophical and theological contemplation without our even realizing it, forcing us to take a deep breath.
The difficulty of his work is not at all due to terminology.
This is because his thoughts are developed based on the premise of deep experiences in life.
Therefore, the charm of this book lies in the fact that although it may seem difficult to understand for the knowledgeable, it is easily understood by the common-sense intellectual with a wealth of human experience.

This is because the relationship between 'me and it' is a temporary and mechanical relationship in which the world is viewed from an instrumental perspective and the object can be replaced at any time.
On the other hand, the relationship between 'me and you' is a relationship in which we face each other personally, and it is a relationship in which the unique 'me' who cannot be replaced by anything and the irreplaceable 'you' exist in deep trust.
In order to discover one's true inner self, it is necessary to establish a relationship between 'me and you'.
Because humans can only find their true selves in relationships.
Meanwhile, Buber argued that “all true life is encounter.”
In this regard, he diagnosed that the modern tragedy of losing human value and dignity is due to the loss of true relationships and dialogue between people.
That is why I say that encounters and conversations are the most fundamental aspects of human life.
In this book, Buber said that the extension of all encounters is toward the 'Eternal You' (God), which can be said to reveal an aspect of Jewish mysticism.
According to Buber, encounter is closer to an intuitive judgment given a priori, like a divine grace, in which the subject and object are not separated, rather than something that can be obtained through personal experience or effort.
Therefore, meeting means spiritual unity that accepts existence as it is.
The human world can be divided into a personal community based on the root word 'I-you', where true conversation takes place, and a collective society based on the root word 'I-it', where only monologue takes place, that is, an impersonal community that sees others as nothing more than a means to satisfy one's own desires, or 'it'.
In this regard, Buber appeals to make the world a relationship of 'I and you' rather than 'I and it'.
In today's world, where true relationships and conversations have been lost, this book will awaken us to the true value of life.
