Publisher's Review
'ㄱㄴㄷ Picture Book': Learning and Mastering Korean Through All Five Senses
A food picture book that lets you experience scents and tastes through vivid illustrations.
Enjoy it slowly and deliciously with the whole family!
Every October, there are many opportunities to celebrate Hangeul Day with children in a meaningful way.
In educational settings, students watch audiovisual materials to understand the spirit of King Sejong, the creator of Hangeul, while at home, they visit places like the Hangeul Museum to learn about the outstanding qualities of Hangeul, which has been recognized worldwide.
However, there is a very easy way to celebrate Hangeul Day in a meaningful way.
This is how you can learn Korean through picture books.
"Welcome! GND Buffet" is a work created by author Choi Kyung-sik who pondered how children could learn Hangul in a fun and natural way through picture books.
Suddenly, I wanted to create an exciting and fun GND picture book.
There were many times when I smiled while composing the content and drawing the pictures.
It also contains the father's heart that he wanted to give a gift to his second child, who was unable to play the flashcard game with the excuse of being busy.
I hope that not only preschool children but also adults who read to them can enjoy Lulu Lala together.
- From the author's note
In fact, this book is very attractive to both children who do not know all of the Korean alphabet and adults who do.
It is not only for the purpose of teaching Korean, but also because it excels in storytelling and playfulness, which are the essence of picture books.
The story itself is powerful, revealing the honest thoughts and feelings of children who want to eat delicious food until their stomachs burst, but also wish to not be full because they can't eat more once they're full.
Based on this powerful story, the author creates a new picture book that has never been seen before.
The high level of completion of the drawings is particularly impressive.
Artist Choi Kyung-sik's paintings are usually divided into detailed pen drawings with sincerity and humorous, simple drawings.
Each has its own unique character, but in this book, the story illustrations are humorous and simple drawings, and the food illustrations are vivid enough to make you feel the scent and taste.
The harmony of two styles is refreshing.
Choi Kyung-sik X Park Jeong-seop,
A "song picture book" born from the collaboration of two unique picture book authors.
When you open the book, you will see a scene with a single consonant letter, followed by short sentences and words that begin with that letter.
The short sentences on the left page are repeated in 4·3 rhythm, and as you read them, you feel like you are reading a poem or singing a song.
Picture book author Park Jeong-seop took advantage of the characteristics of these picture book texts and created a song by adding music to the text.
This impressive song has an addictive melody that will have you humming it all day long after you hear it once, making the picture book even more lively.
You can scan the QR code on the back cover to download sheet music, audio, and videos, so enjoy them in various formats.

Children sing and play on their own
Enjoy the fun of learning and mastering the Korean language!
GND picture books are a type of picture book that young children learning Korean will inevitably encounter at least once.
If you are a parent with children, this is a book you will definitely buy at least one or two copies of.
Although most books are published for infants aged 1 to 3, many books with stories or special concepts are also published for children aged 4 to 7.
This book is also aimed at young children who have a vague understanding of the concept of initial consonants and can play initial consonant games with their parents, albeit clumsily.
Parents should encourage their children to enjoy picture books more actively by interacting with them.
It's also a fun way to read a book, with parents asking questions and children answering to find food names that begin with certain consonants.
If you actually go to a buffet with your child, you can try to get more immersed in the activities.
When children encounter Hangul in a fun way through play and picture books, they begin to show interest in the letters on their own.
Sometimes I point to the letters on signs, and sometimes I point out letters I know on street signs.
This is a characteristic that arises naturally as you learn Korean.
"Welcome! ㄱㄴㄷ Buffet" helps children discover the joy of learning and mastering Korean on their own.
