Mountain light
Description
Book Introduction
A journey into the embrace of the mountain and up towards the light
Poet Park No-hae's "Mountain Light": A Grand Narrative
Delivering solid faith in a shaky world
“There is a mountain, a mountain between heaven and earth.
The mountain is a secret guide connecting two worlds.
The mountain is a great guardian that embraces everything.
“Greatness is not about strength, but about character.”
- From the preface to Park No-hae's "Mountain Light"
The "Park No-hae Photo Essay" series, which publishes the photographs and writings of poet Park No-hae, who has been a wanderer of the Earth for the past 20 years, searching for "another path."
The seventh new book, "Mountain Light," tells the story of mountains that have remained unchanged in a chaotic world, and the people who live vibrantly in their embrace.
This one book contains a world of heights and depths, from the layered mountain ridges of Ethiopia to the deepest valleys of the Andes, the steaming calderas of Indonesia, the vertical tunnels of Bolivia, the rocky peaks of the Sudanese desert, and the dazzling snowcaps of the Pakistani plateau.
『Sanbit』, a record born from the fighting spirit and thoughts of poet Park No-hae, who walked on foot to find villages that were not even on the map, the end of the road that a human can reach.
The mountain is silent, but its silence offers the oldest comfort, and if you follow the mountain light and climb, you will meet a higher self.

Into the book
On days when I have a hard time, I start again, repeatedly, anew, looking for a high and deep place, starting from 'Mountain Light'.
The mountain is silent, but its silence is the oldest comfort.
--- p.10
The mountain is the guardian of great love, and greatness is not 'strength' but 'embracing'.
There is great love within me too.
Ah, what kind of life am I embracing?
--- p.20
Nobility is having depth as high as it is tall, and blooming flowers in every wound.
--- p.38
The most distinct belief in the world is belief in the earth.
The belief that we till the land today toward an unseen tomorrow, that a single seed has been planted in the ground and something has begun, that in this darkness, it grows day by day.
--- p.48
“You can’t live alone in the mountains.
“We survive because we have each other.” Another name for love is sharing, a journey where we walk together, relying on each other while carrying our own burdens.
--- p.50
Children in Gaoshan villages like to look into the distance like deer.
Beyond that mountain, is it a faint longing or a waiting?
To look is to look with 'hope', and a person becomes what he looks at.
--- p.54
Even in a land of anxiety and fear, someone must survive, someone must survive to the end and preserve this smile, there is a day when one smile can overcome the world.
--- p.72
A huge snowy mountain is reduced to a cup of tea, and flowing clouds quietly circle the teacup, bringing tranquility, spreading smiles, and filling with strength.
Yes, life is more about enjoying things deeply than about having many possessions. A small cafe on the road that faces me.
--- p.80
All living things strive to grow, but the rock mountain gradually carved itself out, becoming a being of divine light and energy.
In a desert that constantly changes with the passage of time and the changing times, there is one being of unwavering faith that never changes.
'I am standing here.'
--- p.82
All beings reveal themselves in the presence of light.
Light has its own breath and waves.
We live by light and see each other by light.
--- p.104
Life is like a mountain, don't be impatient or lazy, find your own path and move forward leisurely.
Love, giving myself to love.
Like that eternal mountain light now.
The mountain is silent, but its silence is the oldest comfort.

Publisher's Review
The 28 black-and-white photographs in 『Mountain Light』 offer a sense of depth and dignity through light and shade, while the 9 color photographs offer a visual refreshment with unique colors and emotions, from snow-capped mountains to calderas.
Above all, the most moving part of Park No-hae's photo essay is the 37 pieces of writing added to each photo.
The face of an old woman engraved with the twists and turns of life like a mountainside, the person who raises a mountain by planting trees in a barren land, the clear eyes of a girl going to school across the mountain, the smile of a boy who can conquer the world with just one laugh, the majestic snow-capped peaks of mountains and the neat paths of the highlands.
Poet Park No-hae's unique style and thinking allows him to capture history, stories, and meaning in a single photograph in just a few lines, gently guiding us beyond the moment within the frame into a deeper and wider world.
The English translation by Brother Anthony of Taize (Professor Emeritus Ahn Seon-jae of Sogang University), a leading expert in Korean literature translation, is also included.
An exhibition will also be held where all the photographs included in the book "Sanbit" can be appreciated as artwork. (July 4, 2025 - March 29, 2026, Seochon 'La Cafe Gallery') Since its first exhibition in 2010, the cumulative number of visitors to Park No-hae's photo exhibition, which has continued with confessions such as "being cleansed by tears" and pledges such as "gaining the courage to live again," has now exceeded 410,000.
A place where analog black-and-white photographs, each developed by a craftsman in a darkroom, captions that condense stories into short stories, and world music collected by poet Park No-hae from around the world flow.
Entering 'La Gallery', you will experience the breath of the earth and the thrill of the heart, as well as poet Park No-hae's photographs engraved on a single piece of photographic paper, etched into you as light.
In today's rapidly changing world, where the language of faith and love has become powerless.
Follow the narrative of 『Mountain Light』 by poet Park No-hae and feel the light, strength, and great embrace of love within you.
“Today, too, in that high and deep place, the earth is silent, the people are upright, the mountain colors are aloof, and in the midst of this chaotic world, they silently keep their place.
“When the mountain-like faith within me wavers and the light of love fades, follow this ‘mountain light’ and may the mountain light shine dazzlingly within you as well.” (Park No-hae)
