Understanding and Tactics for Compartment Fires
Description
Book Introduction
This book was created to make the complex nature of compartment fires more easily understandable and to bridge the gap between scientific theory and practical firefighting tactics.
From dramatic phenomena like flashovers and backdrafts to the warning signs that even a small change in smoke can signal, we've tried to explain this from the perspective of those on the scene, and we've organized it so that anyone interested in fire, including firefighters, can easily read, understand, and utilize it.

Publisher's Review
preface
Fire, stolen from the gods by Prometheus of ancient Greece and given to humans.
Because fire symbolized knowledge and technology beyond the value of a simple natural phenomenon, humans were able to create civilization and achieve remarkable development.
However, just as Prometheus was punished by having his liver eaten by an eagle, fire also came to have a dangerous meaning as human civilization developed.
Today we feel the duality of fire more keenly.
Fire is both a source of energy and a source of danger, a tool that sustains life and sometimes a weapon that takes lives.
Moreover, for firefighters, fire is not simply an object to be fought and put out.
Fire is something that needs to be controlled, but it is also something that needs to be understood.
Fire can become a life-or-death variable when we try to control it without sufficient understanding.
Fires, especially those occurring in confined spaces or compartments, are difficult to predict due to the many hidden dangers and have the characteristic of quickly worsening the situation, so even a small misjudgment can lead to a major accident.
In this complex fire environment, simple courage and a sense of mission are not enough for firefighters to safely carry out their duties.
A scientific understanding of fire phenomena and systematic training in practical situations are essential.
In particular, an in-depth understanding of compartment fire dynamics is no longer an elective but a required subject for all personnel performing fire suppression duties, including fire investigators and live fire training instructors.
This book was created to make the complex nature of compartment fires more easily understandable and to bridge the gap between scientific theory and practical firefighting tactics.

This revised edition addresses the lack of understanding of fire mechanisms, heat transfer, and airflow in compartments, and reflects the latest knowledge on tactical decision-making.
And by explaining how understanding of fire phenomena and theories can be applied in real-life situations using actual accident cases, we have tried to make this a theoretical book that is practically helpful in actual fire training and fire scenes.
It will provide a foundation for new firefighters, a deep theoretical basis for experienced instructors and trainers, and an important reference point for field commanders.
I hope this book will help you improve your safety and capabilities, and I express my respect and gratitude to all firefighters who silently fulfill their missions on the ground today.
Finally, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Park Young-sa, the faculty members of fire schools across the country, and the instructors and personnel of the Ulsan Special Disaster Training Center for their assistance in publishing this revised edition.
Just as Prometheus's gift of fire to humans unlocked the possibilities of humanity, I sincerely hope this book will help you broaden your expertise and safety.
