Book Introduction
The textbook, "Management Accounting," was created for students taking the Management Accounting course at Korea National Open University to provide an easy-to-understand explanation of the basic knowledge required for management accounting.
We hope this book will be helpful as a basic textbook on management accounting for both students learning management accounting for the first time and practitioners seeking to utilize management accounting knowledge in the field.
This textbook is structured as follows to enable systematic study of the theory and practice of management accounting.
Part 1: Basic Concepts for Learning Management Accounting introduces management accounting, focusing on its differences from financial accounting, and covers various cost concepts that serve as the foundation for learning subsequent content.
Part 2, Short-Term Profit Planning and Decision-Making, covers management accounting techniques used in planning and decision-making to achieve short-term profit goals.
By predicting the cost structure through various cost estimation methods and identifying profit fluctuations according to changes in operating volume through CVP analysis, break-even point analysis and target profit planning can be established.
It also covers the various short-term decisions managers face, as well as long-term investment decisions through capital budgeting, examining how management accounting information can be effectively utilized in a variety of business situations.
In Part 3, Budget and Performance Evaluation, we will examine the concept and types of budgets, which represent management plans in numbers, and the process of preparing a comprehensive budget. Next, we will learn about difference analysis, which analyzes causes by comparing budget and actual results, and performance evaluation methods based on this analysis.
Finally, in Part 4, Strategic Management Accounting, it is emphasized that management accounting is not simply a number management tool, but a strategic tool that leads to the long-term growth and sustainability of a company or organization.
We will explore the role of building a strategic performance evaluation system through the Balanced Scorecard and contributing to enhancing corporate competitiveness through life-cycle cost management, target costing, and environmental management accounting.
