Into the book
For the past 13 years, I have been treating patients and providing health guidance in 45 countries around the world.
There has never been a single case of physical or mental pain without a reason.
Only by looking into that life could one understand the root of that pain and illness.
There was always hardship at the end of the story.
(Abbreviation) Every pain has a story.
So the physical pain, mental anxiety, and depression they experienced were not their fault.
It wasn't a problem.
It was hard work.
It was just that the self-care system in my body had weakened because I had not been able to take care of myself for a long time.
The pain was a signal and effort from the body.
It was an appeal that you had suffered enough, so now it was time to turn your attention to me and take care of me.
--- p.28
Everyone has an innate self-care system within their body.
The self-care system creates health sustainability by looking back on pain and making health sustainable.
This power is only exerted when you take care of yourself every day.
--- p.29
When your body hurts, your mind hurts.
When your body is tense, your mind becomes tense too.
The field of neuroscience clearly defines ‘emotion.’
'Emotions are the result of the brain understanding the state of the body, interpreting it, and reacting to it.'
Simply put, the brain pays attention to how the body reacts to the countless things we encounter in life, rather than the things themselves.
You notice your body tense up, your neck and shoulders tense up, and your heartbeat and breathing become faster or irregular.
The brain interprets these characteristic changes in the body as a sign of a crisis or dangerous situation and induces emotions.
--- p.63
Lifting your head in difficult and challenging situations in life doesn't mean you're not afraid. It's a powerful message from your body that you're willing to be brave, even though it might be scary and difficult.
The brain recognizes this and responds with hormones.
And it governs behavior.
This process is the flow of change that begins in the body and takes place in life.
--- p.127
When the mind struggles, the twelve cranial nerves also struggle.
Her emotional muscles, involving cranial nerves 5, 7, and 12, were stiff.
Stiff facial muscles, stiff jaw muscles, and the four emotional muscles on the left and right sides of the neck and shoulders that are stiff and hard like stones.
With such tension, it is natural that the neck and spine are compressed.
(Shortened) I taught her to take care of herself.
He taught me how to manually relax the tension in each nerve pathway.
I also tried to massage the muscles called emotional muscles.
He taught me how to restore my spinal discs to a healthier state and how to provide self-care to stabilize my overactive sympathetic nerves.
--- p.146
Let's say the pressure on the spine while standing is 100%.
How much force is placed on the spine when sitting? A study by Dr. Nachemson, a renowned pain medicine physician, found that the force is increased by 140%, or about 1.5 times.
In particular, sitting with your head tilted forward places 185% more pressure on your spine, which is about twice as much as standing.
Long term, if the spinal discs lose water, it will eventually lead to a herniated disc.
(Abbreviation) What is more concerning when sitting for long periods of time is the internal organs of the body.
If the spine is under this much pressure, the pressure in the abdominal space will also be considerable.
Pressure on the abdominal space can cause reflux esophagitis and gastritis in the stomach, malabsorption in the small intestine, and irritable bowel disease in the large intestine.
--- p.283
It goes without saying that the structure of the body makes its functions possible.
Moving your body allows your body to function sustainably.
This movement circulates the moisture in our bodies and minds that is necessary for life.
If we breathe comfortably in the right body posture and add the right thoughts to our mind, health will always be with us.
I just missed this simple yet great thing in my busy life.
You just have to recover again.
The seven body postures presented below are scientifically proven and medically effective.
The journey from head to heart for behavior change is said to be short but arduous.
Fortunately, I believe that the journey of those who have read this far has already reached their hearts.
Now, let's embark on a journey of seven body practices.
If you make it a habit to maintain a healthy posture, like taking a walk every day, health will soon become yours.

■“I just lived hard, so why am I in pain?”
Answers from self-care medicine expert Dr. Joseph Kim
There are people who have lived hard but suddenly find themselves in pain.
I'm clearly sick, but when I go to the hospital, they say there's no clear diagnosis and they don't know the cause.
They just tell you to avoid stress.
Why on earth did this pain come to me? To understand why I'm in pain, I need the time and dedication to carefully investigate the cause.
Dr. Joseph Kim, a self-care medicine expert, says that if you follow the thread of pain, you will come across a person's hardship.
When self-care is a low priority, it means life is a struggle.
If we go to the root of pain, we can say that pain is ultimately an active signal from the body trying to protect me.
I strongly encourage you to turn pain into an opportunity to find your true self and create a healthier beginning.
To do that, I need to regain my inner health and stamina.
When Dr. Joseph Kim meets with a patient, he spends at least an hour examining the patient's physical and mental state.
Because only by taking a peek into the patient's life can we understand the root of their pain and illness.
Over the past 13 years, I have met patients from 45 countries around the world, assessing their physical and mental health and providing treatment.
Now, I have stepped down from the treatment stage and am sharing my guide to true health with the world through books and lectures.
"Health Sustainability for Those Who Worked Hard" contains the stories of Dr. Joseph Kim, who has spent many years meeting countless people around the world and answering the overwhelming question of pain.
Plus, we offer easy-to-practice solutions for your health.
This book will provide small but clear help in overcoming the pain that has come to me and achieving sustainable, true health.
■'Everyone has the power to maintain their innate health!'
Regaining health and longevity through self-care
Health sustainability is the power to overcome pain and maintain health.
This power is something that everyone is born with.
But when I was born, I found myself in a world that was so fast-paced and competitive, and I had no choice but to work hard and struggle to survive.
Just like a fairy tale where a person wanders far and wide in search of a bluebird, only to find it in their own home, we must find the healthy bluebird within ourselves that we have temporarily lost while living a hard and intense life.
What is needed to regain the ‘health sustainability’, the bluebird within me, is ‘self-care.’
Our bodies already have a well-equipped self-care system to take care of ourselves.
For the aforementioned health sustainability to be strengthened and well-developed, the self-care system must function well.
However, the self-care system is greatly influenced by the body's posture and mental attitude.
Only by nurturing your body and mind can your self-care system function properly and you can achieve sustainable health.
Ultimately, the key to maintaining good health is to live a life that is enjoyable for both body and mind every day.
If I live each day given to me preciously, that in itself is the completion of health.
Dr. Joseph Kim, founder of self-care medicine and educator of physicians, introduces self-care medicine, the easiest and most fundamental tool for restoring health sustainability.
Self-care medicine is about the self, not others, leading one's life.
Through ‘care’ of the body and mind, rather than relying on treatment
Medicine that restores everyone's innate ability to maintain good health
