50 Japanese Hot Springs to Enjoy with the JR Pass
Description
Book Introduction
From Hokkaido to Kagoshima
A dreamlike hot spring trip across the Japanese archipelago
With the opening of overseas travel, which had been long closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of Koreans traveling to Japan has exploded, and this trend continues to this day.
In addition, thanks to the support of readers, my book has reached the end of its first three editions and is now in its latest revised edition.
This book contains updated travel information, including regional JR Pass prices revised in October 2023 and the latest train and bus timetables revised in April 2024.
This book guides you to enjoy various hot spring spots in Japan by taking a train trip using the local JR Pass (excluding places that can only be reached by private railway or bus).
Unlike Korea, which has only about 10 hot springs, Japan, which is part of the Pacific Rim volcanic belt, is known to have about 3,000 hot springs across the country.
With the low-cost JR Pass, you can enjoy a variety of scenic hot springs, including an open-air bath by the sea while gazing at the sunset over the open sea, an open-air bath in late autumn with red maple leaves floating in the air, a beautiful snow-covered highland or an open-air bath in a deep mountain valley while snow falls.
The dreamlike experience of soaking and healing in a place like this will remain a memory for a lifetime.
Additionally, if you soak in hot spring water of various qualities and temperatures, such as sulfur springs, acid springs, alkaline springs, and radioactive springs, you can immediately feel your skin improving.
This book, written by a Japan travel expert who has visited Japan over 180 times for business and leisure over the past 30 years, introduces ways to get to 50 Japanese hot springs by JR train for those who dream of a private trip where they can enjoy themselves to their heart's content rather than a standardized package tour.
By following the 12 model course schedules for each JR Pass and detailed public transportation information for each hot spring provided in this book, you can enjoy a happy time at the hot springs without a guide.
We also added a dictionary of Japanese food culture knowledge in the appendix so that you can order the food you want without having to look at the menu.
We also introduce ekiben (train station lunch boxes) made with local specialties at each station, so you can enjoy another pleasure of train travel.

Into the book
Among the 50 hot springs, we strongly recommend Kusatsu Onsen, which has been ranked number one in popularity in Japan for 19 consecutive years; Shima Onsen, a wooden building with a history of over 420 years; Manza Kogen Onsen, an open-air bath with eight colors and ingredients on a 1,800m plateau; Aoni Onsen, lit by oil lamps; Koganezaki Furofushi Onsen, an open-air bath on a rock by the sea with rough waves crashing in; Ginzan Onsen, which was the setting for Hayao Miyazaki's animation "Spirited Away" for its fantastical four-story traditional wooden ryokan street; Tokachigawa Onsen, one of only two moors (sedimentary plant-based hot springs) in the world; and Kuronagi Onsen, an open-air bath nestled in the valley of Tateyama Kurobe Gorge that is only open from spring to autumn. These are lesser-known, secluded hot springs that we highly recommend.

The JR East Pass Tohoko 5-day is a very comprehensive pass that allows you to travel to all of the Tohoku region, including Aomori, Akita, Iwate, Yamagata, Miyagi, and Fukushima prefectures, in addition to the JR Tokyo Wide Pass sections. It is a very useful pass that allows you to fully enjoy the snowy scenery of the Tohoku region, which gets a lot of snow in the winter, and to travel to relatively cool valleys in the summer.
For example, the Tokyo-Shin-Aomori Shinkansen fare is 17,670 yen, so even a single round trip from Narita Airport (3,070 yen) to Shin-Aomori is more than double the price of the JR Pass, and if you use it in various ways for 5 days, you can see an effect of more than 2-3 times the price of the pass.
--- p.70
It is more useful to use the Kansai Thru Pass than the JR Pass to go to Arima Onsen.
Located in Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture, it is one of the three oldest hot springs in Japan, one of the three most famous hot springs in Japan, and the best hot spring in western Japan.
During the Edo period, it was considered the best hot spring in the western region, and was loved for a long time as it climbed Nishiozeki.
Since ancient times, emperors have frequently visited the area, and the Arima Palace and Arima Inari Shrine were built there.
During the Nara period, an onsenji temple was built and Arima Onsen, which had been devastated by war, was rebuilt, creating the prototype of a healing hot spring resort in 1192.
It is said that Toyotomi Hideyoshi visited this place nine times to relax and soak in the hot springs during important moments such as battles, appointments, and deaths of family members.
--- p.204
You won't even find a TV, which is common in most accommodations.
Meals include mountain vegetables, salt-grilled freshwater fish, and Toyama's specialty, Konfujime sashimi.
Konpujime sashimi (昆布じめ刺身) refers to sashimi of raw fish wrapped in kelp and aged.
The kitchen, which was used for a long time in the past, is now provided as a space for guests.
At the entrance to the restaurant, there is a coin-operated public phone, a vending machine selling canned beer, soft drinks, etc., a small TV that only shows analog satellite broadcasts, and a morning newspaper.
The hot spring at Kuronagi Onsen Ryokan is a healing hot spring bath.
The ryokan building has separate indoor baths for men and women, and if you walk upstream for about 3 minutes from the accommodation, you will find an open-air bath where mixed bathing is allowed.
Recently, a new women-only open-air bath called Tennyo-no-yu (天女の湯, Fairy Bath) was opened across the suspension bridge.
There is a roof here.
However, both places have separate hours for women and men at night, so you need to check in advance.
The open-air bath has a tent changing room.

Publisher's Review
A sea train with a beautiful sunset, a valley train with lush greenery, a steam locomotive of memories, etc.
A beautiful hot spring trip with the JR trains that travel throughout the Japanese archipelago.
#12 You can collect stamps at Japanese hot springs with the JR train pass!
The Japanese archipelago is largely divided into two regions, eastern and western, and a total of 12 pass usage methods are explained.
The eastern region includes eastern Japan and Hokkaido, and includes explanations of five passes: the JR Tokyo Wide Pass 3-day, JR East Pass Tohoku 5-day, JR East Pass Nagano/Niigata 5-day, JR Hidaji Frigate 3-day consecutive pass, and JR Hokkaido Rail Pass.
In the western region, we looked at seven passes, including the JR Kansai Wide Pass 5-day, JR San'in Okayama Pass 4-day, JR Hokuriku Pass 4-day, JR Hiroshima-Yamaguchi Pass 5-day, JR All Shikoku Pass, JR Northern Kyushu Rail Pass, and JR Southern Kyushu Rail Pass.
Although Japan has relatively high railway fares compared to other countries, there are various JR passes available for foreigners, making it easy to enjoy a trip to hot springs.
Let's take the JR train using 12 passes and go on a 'Japanese hot spring stamp tour'.
#Japan From the most popular hot springs to lesser-known hidden gems
The author of this book has personally experienced over 100 hot springs while traveling the entire JR railway line, which stretches over 20,000 kilometers from Hokkaido, the northernmost point of the Japanese archipelago, to Kagoshima, the southernmost point, and has selected 50 beautiful hot springs that he would definitely recommend visiting at least once.
In particular, we strongly recommend the lesser-known and secret hot springs such as Kusatsu Onsen, which has been ranked number one in popularity in Japan for 19 consecutive years; Shima Onsen with its beautiful wooden building with a history of over 420 years; Manza Kogen Onsen with its open-air baths of eight different colors and ingredients on a 1,800m plateau; Aoni Onsen deep in the mountains lit by kerosene lamps; Koganezaki Furofushi Onsen with its open-air baths of rocks by the sea; Ginzan Onsen, which was the setting for the anime Spirited Away; Tokachigawa Onsen, one of only two moor hot springs in the world; and Kuronagi Onsen nestled in the valley of Tateyama Kurobe Gorge, which is open only from spring to autumn.
#Includes the latest revisions to detailed train and bus timetables to help you travel freely even if you don't know Japanese.
This book is the latest revised edition of '50 Japanese Hot Springs to Enjoy on a JR Train'.
Thanks to the continued support of our readers, we have published three editions of the first edition. Recently, we have published a revised edition with supplementary travel information to address changes in Japanese transportation information.
The train and bus timetables are updated to reflect the latest timetables as of April 1, 2024, and the JR Pass price list, which has been significantly increased by 20-70% for the first time in 30 years, is updated to reflect the latest timetables as of October 1, 2023.
Some chronically deficit local train lines are seeing a reduction in service each year, and bus schedules are also subject to change, so it's a good idea to check in advance or upon arrival.
Japan, a country that occasionally experiences natural disasters such as earthquakes and typhoons, requiring time for recovery, is a country where public transportation methods have not changed much over the decades.
#Introducing the perfect model course for Japanese hot spring travelers, including 3-night, 4-day, 4-night, 5-day, and 5-night, 6-day itineraries.
We've organized the model courses that can be taken using each pass into easy-to-understand itineraries, from the most popular 3 nights and 4 days to 4 nights and 5 days and 5 nights and 6 days.
If you are going on an independent trip rather than a package tour, the biggest challenge will be figuring out how to plan your itinerary without the help of a travel agent.
Based on the author's many years of experience, we present the most optimized route.
It tells you the specific departure and arrival times, dividing them into several scenarios, including which train to take, where to transfer, and how to get to your destination.
He also added an explanation of tourist attractions around the hot springs.
