Into the book
When fountain pens first appeared, they were one of the most advanced portable items available.
Today, smartphones are the objects that speak of the changes in our times, but 100 years ago, it was the fountain pen that spoke of such changes.
Therefore, fountain pens contain many elements that show the changing times.
If you can read this, you will begin to see not only the fountain pen, but also history.
This is why when you fall in love with fountain pens, you inevitably fall in love with the historical background and history.
--- From "Objects Infused with Humanities"

Thanks to the fountain pen, I was able to reread the works of Park Mok-wol, a master of our modern literature, and hear a rich glimpse into his life from those closest to him.
This is the power of a small object called a fountain pen, and it is the reason why I continue to love fountain pens.

--- From "The Mystery of Mr. Park Mok-wol and Parker 45"

Since 1908, Montblanc's headquarters have been located in Hamburg's Sternschanze, which translates into English as 'STAR FORTIFICATION'.
That is, it means ‘fortress of the stars.’
It is said that the White Star originated here.
It is also said that shops and hotels in the Sternschanze area often use a white hexagonal star as their logo.
--- From "The Controversy Surrounding the White Star: Is It Really the Star of David?"

Although Chairman Kim Jong-un and President Trump are polar opposites, their pen choices are similar.
It's a shame it's not a fountain pen, but for the two of them, in an era where showing off was necessary, a felt-tip pen that writes boldly and thickly was perfect.
--- From "Kim Jong-un and Trump are different, but their pens are similar"

As the pen tip wears down to a certain degree, it becomes optimized for the user.
A fountain pen that is tailored to the user in this way becomes one of a kind in the world.
Like the fox in The Little Prince.
This is the real charm of fountain pens.
If you use it for a long time, you will eventually have to let it go, but if you take care of it, it will be with you for a lifetime, just like its name suggests.

--- From "The Gold and Platinum Bond Connected by the Morning Star"

Straighten your back, raise your head, and hold the fountain pen as if gently wrapping it around you.
Relax your strength, slightly lift your arm away from your armpit, and hold the pen at a 45-55 degree angle.
You can use it with the cap on or off, but if you put it in straight along the nib, it looks cool, like you're wearing a tie.
Use only genuine ink, and close the cap immediately after writing to protect the sensitive nib.
And if you write with love every day, the fountain pen will become your one and only partner.
--- From "Shall we dance?"

Mrs. Jacqueline seemed to like this lighter quite a bit.
In 1973, she made this request to DuPont:
“Please make a ballpoint pen that matches this lighter.” Dupont responded to Jacqueline’s request, the influencer of the century.
At Mrs. Jacqueline's request, Dupont incorporated the roller of a lighter, which is turned to light the pen, into the design of the body of the ballpoint pen.
The Dupont ballpoint pen line that was born this way is Dupont Classiques.
--- From "Where do fashions come from?"

『Fountain Pen Greed』 is a special travelogue that contains stories of people and the world engraved on fountain pens.
This book, published in 2018, is a revised edition that was published after the previously published book sold out after the author, Park Jong-jin, director of the Fountain Pen Research Institute, appeared on the popular podcast “Monthly Kim Eo-jun.”
16 new stories were added to the existing episodes.
The author of this book, Jongjin Park, is a fountain pen enthusiast who has dedicated his life to fountain pens for over 40 years.
I love fountain pens, so I researched and collected fountain pens and collected related materials.
As a result, I see everything in the world through the window of a fountain pen.
He is also a writing instrument expert who, while studying fountain pens, became interested in other writing instruments and even paper, and ended up studying all aspects of writing instruments.
He opened the only 'Fountain Pen Research Institute' in Euljiro, where he shared knowledge with fountain pen enthusiasts and repaired fountain pens. In 2023, he expanded and relocated the research institute to Chungjeong-ro.

When he starts talking about fountain pens, you find yourself listening.
I see everything through the filter of a fountain pen, because it is through this filter that I see people and the world.
What pens did Kim Jong-un and Trump choose when signing, and why? What fountain pen did Park Mok-wol use? Was Hitler's fountain pen a Montblanc? What fountain pen does Queen Elizabeth II use? The author uses fountain pens to reveal hidden anecdotes behind historical events and reveal the personalities of individuals.
For example, both Kim Jong-un and Trump used felt-tip pens, commonly referred to as "mark pens," during the North Korea-US summit.
The author attributes the reason to the personalities of the two leaders.
He chose a pen that would allow him to write boldly and naturally, as he needed to show off his writing skills in front of the world.
It is a strange commonality between two people who stand at opposite ends of the spectrum.
The pens the two men used could provide a clue to understanding the changing state of North American relations.

The world seen through this book is filled with historical events and human stories.
The author's 42 episodes and 14 tips for collecting fountain pens will serve as a basis for readers to establish a new perspective on fountain pens.
Even if you enter the world of fountain pens because of their physical properties, you will not be left behind by the traces of humanities embedded in them.

Two thoughts on fountain pens:
Speaking of the mind that looks deeply (探) and the mind that desires (貪)

Fountain pens are uncomfortable.
It has been a long time since ballpoint pens took over the throne of writing instruments.
Although it cannot compete with ballpoint pens in practicality, the history of fountain pens still continues.
There are still many people who seek out fountain pens, and the number of people who consider them objects of collection is increasing.
What exactly is it about fountain pens that so captivates people? "Fountain Pen Greed" explores the twofold attitude toward fountain pens.
One is '탐' (探, to search, to study), which means to look deeply and study, and the other is '탐' (貪, to desire, to hope), which means to desire.
People who collect anything, not just fountain pens, have these two minds.
The author developed this mindset and became the country's leading fountain pen expert.

The 'exploration' he shows is a persistent study and pure love for fountain pens.
The results we found as a result contain a lot of interesting information.
The fountain pen exploration is full of interesting stories discovered while studying fountain pens, including stories about pens used by Kim Jong-un and Trump, a fountain pen tracker used by Hitler, a fountain pen used by the Queen of England, a scene from the movie 'Captain America: Civil War', and even the fountain pen ceremony of the US President.
In particular, the story of accidentally repairing a fountain pen believed to have been used by Mr. Park Mok-wol and tracing its history over the course of 10 years delivers the fun and excitement of reading a historical mystery novel.

Another section, centered around 'Tam' (貪), or the love and affection for fountain pens, is a collection of stories about the process of collecting or repairing fountain pens.
Stories like finding an unexpected fountain pen at a flea market, rescuing a legendary fountain pen from a pile of discarded pens on eBay, the secrets to the success of limited edition fountain pens, the world's most unique fountain pen repairman, and the influence of Lady Jacqueline's lighter on the world of fountain pens are stories that any pen enthusiast cannot miss.

Those who read this book will have a different perspective on fountain pens.
You may use the pen you own while recalling the story behind it, or you may collect fountain pens with a sense of purpose.
Maybe you could take out your parents' fountain pen from a drawer and see what it's worth.
All of this will be a process that draws readers into the world of fountain pens.
There is no harm in it.
Maybe you'll find a treasure that's been sleeping in your drawer.
