Publisher's Review
A 30-Year-Old Youth Writing Teacher's Concerns About Today's Students' Literacy

These days, teenagers don't read books much because they are only focused on studying to improve their academic performance.
Of course, it's partly due to lack of time, but it's also a big reason why people neglect reading books while being absorbed in smartphones, games, and the internet.
The author has been teaching writing to teenagers for over 30 years.
He said that after teaching for many years, he could not help but be surprised by the commonalities he felt with each new student.
First, he doesn't read books well, second, his spelling and writing skills are noticeably poor, and third, his ability to understand sentences, or in other words, his literacy, is lacking.
To be honest, it was shocking in itself that I was born Korean and used Hangul, but I couldn't properly understand it.

Among teenagers, the majority could not even fill five pages of 200-character manuscript paper.
But what was even more surprising was that the same was true for the excellent students who ranked first, third, and top ten in their entire grade.
So the author guided teenagers in his own way.
First, I had them read one book every week and write down the plot and their feelings.
Second, I developed the habit of taking notes on things I saw or heard, or things that were special to me.
Third, we encouraged natural discussion on any issue or topic.
Fourth, we gave them a writing topic and had them write about 5 pages of manuscript paper and present it.
Fifth, we focused on broadening the scope of thinking by asking questions.
These five methods were repeated consistently.
One of those methods was to help students easily understand idioms through stories.

The power of meaning in four-character idioms that foster literacy and writing skills

Meanwhile, my writing skills gradually began to appear.
One peculiar thing I discovered was that while teenagers had difficulty writing on a given topic, when I allowed them to write freely and concisely without being restricted by format or subject matter, they showed unexpected results.
Not only is writing fun, but my writing skills have improved.
As I continued to do this, I was able to write book reviews and prose in a coherent manner.
Here, the author found that writing with a story, or in other words, idioms, helps teenagers become interested in writing.
Why? Because it helps improve literacy and writing skills.
So, what's the connection between four-character idioms and literacy or writing skills? The answer lies in the fact that four-character idioms aren't simply four-character Chinese characters.
Each character in an idiom has its own origin.
Its origin has a story like a fairy tale or a palm novel, and it is fun.
This is the point where four-character idioms become an important point in developing literacy and writing skills, and this is the charm of four-character idioms.
Why is that?

To understand this text, you need to read it carefully to improve your comprehension skills, and you will also learn writing skills through the expressions in the text.
This book contains a variety of idioms.
Through this, you can learn the origins of four-character idioms, learn the sounds and meanings of Chinese characters, and each four-character idiom has a fun and interesting origin story.
I believe that this one book will be of great help in improving literacy and writing skills by not only learning four-character idioms but also learning Chinese characters and their interesting origins.
The teenage years are a crucial time in life when you lay the foundation for your dreams.
Just as building a building requires a strong frame to make it sturdy, building a good frame for your dreams will greatly help you achieve them.
I hope this book will be of great help to teenagers in understanding and writing, and I hope that teenagers in Korea will pursue their dreams in a bright and healthy way.
Moreover, this book will be a good Chinese character textbook not only for teenagers, but also for college students and adults who pursue sophisticated writing skills!
