Book Introduction
We asked an English education expert!
Where should I go to live abroad to help my child learn English?

Anywhere I can learn English, experience different cultures, and experience a different world would be great.
In terms of cost-effectiveness, Southeast Asian countries that use English as their official language may be better.
However, the author, an English education expert, says there are several reasons why he chose 'Canada'.

“More than anything, I placed the greatest importance on whether English was the ‘native language.’
You can learn English well enough in the Philippines and Malaysia.
But it makes a big difference whether English is your native language or not.
When learning English, it is very helpful to learn not only the forms of the language (phonics, vocabulary, grammar, etc.) but also actual communication styles.
Also, considering that most of the foreign culture we encounter, such as books and movies, comes from English-speaking countries, we need to learn about those countries’ cultures more than anything else.”

It is said that in order to increase the effectiveness of education, the child's emotional stability must also be taken into consideration.

“At first, like everyone else, I thought, ‘If you speak English, you mean America,’ but America was a high wall.
As I erased the United States, Canada came into view.
I liked the image of the natural environment, and I also liked the fact that it was close to the United States.
The UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand were also attractive, but I couldn't ignore their education systems, safety, and cost of living.
“In the end, I thought Canada was the best option.”

Furthermore, since English education requires a significant investment of time and money, parents must be clear about their educational philosophy and standards to ensure a cost-effective trip that reduces the financial burden while improving the quality of education.
Also, it is full of essential 'tips' for mothers to study abroad with their children in Canada while further improving the quality of education.
These aren't secrets that are kept hidden somewhere, but rather valuable tips that you'll know after living in Canada for at least a few months.
If you miss the opportunity because you received such information too late, it will be a difficult opportunity to come across again as it is a life experience trip.
Wouldn't it be much more fulfilling and enjoyable if an English education expert could provide a comprehensive overview in advance? Six years of elementary school, six years of middle and high school, and at least 12 years of English academy attendance.
Instead of 12 years at an English academy, why not take a one-year language course in Canada?

A time to learn about unfamiliarity and excitement, and to find joy in learning!
Everyday life becomes a journey and travel becomes learning!

Into the book
Recently, at the Academy Awards, actress Youn Yuh-jung delivered her acceptance speech in English without an interpreter, full of humor, wit, and emotion. Kim Min-ha, the lead actress in the drama "Pachinko," also told her own stories in various interviews with fluent English.
Their acceptance speeches and interviews weren't the result of sitting at a desk and studying hard.
I grew up experiencing English-speaking environments firsthand or watching and listening to a lot of content in English.
English is no longer a subject for school grades or entrance exams.
It could be the 'key to success' that leads our children into the wider world.

--- From the Author's Preface

Like many people who dream of living abroad for a month, three months, or a year, I decided to take my child with me and live abroad for a year.
More than anything, I wanted my child to see, experience, and feel the vast world firsthand, and to be able to run around and play freely in the vast nature without having to go to and from academy.
But to be honest, I had a strong desire for my child to learn English in a comfortable and natural environment.
So I decided that if I were to leave, I would go to an English-speaking country where English is the native language.

--- From "If you go with children, you must go to Canada"

Living in Canada for a year allows you to experience all the holidays and events of the year.
If you live here for a year, you can experience most of the culture.
Cultural experience—isn't that one of the most important reasons to live in another country?
Also, after living for a year, it is possible to form stable and deep relationships with neighbors and friends.
Of course, you can make good friends even in a short period of time.
But as time goes by, the relationship matures.
You probably know very well how valuable a friendship with a friend from a completely different culture can be for a child.
--- From "Canada, Show Me Your Charm"

Although it may only have been two years, as a mother and an educator working in the field of education, I have been humbled by the Canadian educational system.
Canadian education is centered on teaching students how to fish, and doesn't try to impart textbook knowledge piece by piece.
Isn't it based on the belief that if you teach children how to study, they will explore knowledge on their own?

--- "One day the child said.
From "I'm happy!"

Canada offers a variety of affordable programs at community centers, recreation centers, and sports clubs in every neighborhood, making it a great place to experience a variety of things.
After school, it is certainly meaningful for children to go out to the park and play, go to the library and roll around with books, and spend quality time at home with their mother.
But why not try out activities you've been hesitant to pursue in Korea because they were too expensive, too far away, or simply too difficult to navigate? Why not try something different by hanging out with Canadian friends?
--- "One day the child said.
From "I'm happy!"

If you want to find a place to stay locally, try staying at an Airbnb near your school for a week or two.
If you go to the Craigslist site (vancouver.craigslist.org), you can see all the rental properties at a glance.
Just choose a house you like based on your desired neighborhood, location, housing type, price, etc. and contact us.
If you see a house in person and like it, there are some things to keep in mind when signing a contract.
--- From "Living in Canada: The More You Know, the Easier It Gets, and the More You Experience, the More Comfortable It Gets"

If you go to a small church in your neighborhood, you'll find small, little-known ESL programs.
It is often a survival English program for immigrants who attend church, especially working immigrants.
Because the number of students is small, you can have many conversations with native-speaking teachers who work as volunteers.
--- From "Living in Canada: The More You Know, the Easier It Gets, and the More You Experience, the More Comfortable It Gets"

The "reward" of going to Universal Studios Florida to see Harry Potter after reading the original Harry Potter books will be the best external motivation for children who have already read the books in Korean but haven't been able to bring themselves to read them in English.
Reading Harry Potter in its original language will also significantly improve children's English reading skills.
However, we must be careful, as offering this kind of 'compensation' to children who are not good at reading English books can actually have negative consequences.
--- From "A Small Journey That Shines Learning"

When I look back and ask myself what the best thing I did as a mother was, I would say without a second's hesitation, "Moving to Canada and living with my child."
Although there were many twists and turns before we arrived in Canada, we lived happily there for two years.
If anyone leaves for Canada, I hope they come back having enjoyed the best of Canada like we did.
sincerely!
--- From "Epilogue"

Publisher's Review
Is my child's English studies okay?

The beginning of a fun English education for children,
An essay by an English education expert on 'Studying English in Canada with a Child'!

The COVID-19 virus has completely changed the world's paradigm.
The worry, ‘What if I can’t go anywhere and end up living like a frog in a well?’ was groundless.
With the rapid development of various Internet-based media, we have literally entered an era where we can work and communicate with people around the world from the comfort of our own rooms.
Cultural content has also developed further, with YouTube and OTT becoming the best mediums to fill our free time.
Thanks to this, our K-culture is spreading more quickly throughout the world and establishing itself as a key player in global cultural exchange.
There is something I felt while witnessing and experiencing these changes firsthand.
The fact is that English has become 'much more' important than before.
Now everyone has the opportunity to work and study on a global stage.
If there's one basic tool you absolutely must have to seize this 'opportunity', it's 'English'.

A smart, English education expert mom's overseas educational journey! In this global age, for children to develop the ability to express their thoughts in their own words, without relying on others' words or writing, the beginning of their English studies must be enjoyable and happy.
However, it is difficult to lead children on the 'right path to learning' with the pity for them being forced to go to private academies and the anxiety that they might fall behind.

The author of this book, an English education expert and a mother of two, took her children on a trip to "live in Canada."
As the child plays freely with friends from different cultures, his or her language sensitivity is awakened and his or her communication skills are greatly improved.
English, which I learned in a fun way as a daily language, even gave me a sense of accomplishment in the form of high grades after returning to Korea.

This book, "If You're Going to Canada with a Child," contains the author, an English education expert, points to consider while preparing for an "educational trip abroad," as well as valuable information and practical know-how gained from successfully leading a child's education for two years.
As an education expert, the author maximizes the effectiveness of educational travel by considering the child's emotions, interpersonal relationships, lifestyle habits, and even experiences.
These excellent results were possible thanks to the wise judgment and meticulous care of my mother, an English education expert.
While she had a desire to improve her child's English skills, she also wanted to provide her child with diverse experiences and encourage her child's courageous challenges. This effort led to the successful completion of the "Living in Canada" trip, and she has now published this book as an English education expert, sharing her expertise with mothers struggling with English education.
