Book Introduction
The 『Sejong Hakdang Practical Korean』 textbook is a revised edition of the 『Sejong Korean Conversation』 textbook developed in 2016, which focuses on improving the communication skills of overseas Korean language learners.
In this new publication of 『Sejong Institute Practical Korean』, we conducted a survey of teachers and learners who have experience using the 『Sejong Korean Conversation』 textbook, and conducted in-depth interviews with teachers dispatched to Sejong Institute, local teachers, and operating teachers to maximize the strengths of 『Sejong Korean Conversation』 and supplement its shortcomings.
In particular, we aimed to eliminate gender role stereotypes and prejudices and eliminate gender imbalances in representation, in line with the 'gender impact assessment items' that have recently been attracting attention in Korean language textbooks.
Additionally, we have attempted to increase the efficiency of teaching and learning by clarifying and simplifying things that are unclear in illustrations or photos or where instructions are complex.
In addition, multiple standard words were replaced with vocabulary widely used by Koreans, and consideration was given to the socio-cultural situation in Korea that has changed since publication to enhance timeliness and practical usability in educational settings.

ㆍThis textbook is based on the 45-hour model, which is the abbreviated version of the ‘Sejong Hakdang Standard Education Model’, but can also be used in models longer than 45 hours by including activities additionally suggested in the ‘Sejong Hakdang Practical Korean Teacher’s Guide for Learning and Using Korean Right Away’.
ㆍThe 45-hour model of the 'Sejonghakdang Standard Education Model' is an 'abridged' model that focuses on speaking and listening, and this textbook is also structured around speaking and listening education.
ㆍThis textbook is structured flexibly based on the 45-hour model, but with a modular structure consisting of three parts. This allows students to skip some modules or selectively use some of the sub-components within a module depending on the number of class hours at each Sejong Institute, allowing for smooth progress.
ㆍThis textbook includes a balanced mix of language knowledge and practical communication activities to improve fluency and accuracy.
ㆍThe learning content and activities in this textbook are designed to ensure efficient learning by considering the cognitive abilities and learning strategies of adult learners.
Structure of textbook contents
ㆍThis textbook reflects the themes, language knowledge, and language skills of Volumes 1, 2, 3, and 4 of 『Sejong Korean』 to ensure connectivity with the existing standard textbooks, 『Sejong Korean』 Volumes 1, 2, 3, and 4, and has 14 units each in 『Learn and Use Sejong Hakdang Practical Korean 1』 and 『Learn and Use Sejong Hakdang Practical Korean 2』.
ㆍIn the case of the 45-hour model presented in the ‘Sejong Institute Standard Education Model’, learning models such as ‘3 hours per week x 15 weeks’ and ‘4 hours x 12 weeks’ are presented, and the learning stages of each unit are divided into a total of 3 parts so that they can be utilized in the 60-hour model.
ㆍ'Part 1' and 'Part 2' are aimed at learning language knowledge, so each part allows for the learning of one vocabulary list and one expression item.
In addition, even when learning language knowledge, we included various conversational activities so that learners can internalize language knowledge through meaningful activities beyond the teacher's one-sided explanation and presentation.
ㆍ'Part 3' is divided into 'Practice', 'Talk', and 'Listen and Talk'.
