About the Eco-STEAM Research Group and Authors

Into the book
Recently, we have been hearing a lot of news about disasters related to climate change.
The various disasters currently occurring around the world are difficult to view as coincidences when comprehensively considering their frequency, scale, and intensity.
Over the past decade, record-breaking climate events labeled “once in a century” have occurred frequently, including once-in-a-century torrential downpours, once-in-a-century high temperatures, once-in-a-century droughts, heat waves, typhoons, and the worst fine dust storms in a century.
Do we really perceive this phenomenon as a crisis?

According to the IPCC's 6th Assessment Report, permafrost (soil that remains frozen year-round) will continue to decline. The IPCC Special Report on 1.5°C projects that if the global temperature rises by 2°C, 1.5 to 2.5 million km2 of permafrost will thaw by 1.5°C compared to a 1.5°C rise.11) The fact that permafrost contains a lot of carbon is a major problem.
As permafrost melts, carbon is released into the atmosphere, which will further increase the Earth's temperature. This higher temperature will in turn melt the permafrost, causing the average temperature of the Earth to rise uncontrollably.

To celebrate Science Month in April 2021, we held a zero-waste challenge with all students.
We have developed our plastic-free activities into the "Plastic Zero Festival" to foster environmental action in response to the climate crisis and practice the value of sharing.
We conducted interdisciplinary project classes on the topics of 'climate', 'environment', and 'sustainable development', and promoted the Plastic Zero Challenge in cooperation with youth groups and student councils.
And the entire educational community kept a plastic-free diary for one month, helping students develop sustainable practices.
As a souvenir from the activity, we provided seeds and pencils so that they could connect with their families and always feel the preciousness of life, the need to conserve resources, and the value of resource recycling.

I believe that environmental education is inherently connected to real life, and that the knowledge learned in school should be integrated and utilized to solve various environmental problems.
And based on environmental sensitivity that allows students to internalize a sense of crisis and awareness of environmental issues, I thought of five future competencies: the technological capacity to create anything, the exploratory capacity to explore the principles hidden within, the social responsibility to fulfill one's responsibilities as a member of a democratic society, and the value creation capacity to create new value from discarded waste.
Based on these thoughts, I designed the class and applied it to my classes with students.

Stories about the 2050 Earth Crisis Scenario, carbon neutrality, the relationship between the environment and infectious diseases, environmental and zero-waste movements, and climate change response education raise awareness of the environment and foster a will to take action.

Try upcycling environmental play by recycling the waste that overflows from home and school.
You can also create environmental movement UCCs and creatively make water dispensers, can lights, speakers, and phone stands using recycled materials, while meeting learning achievement standards and putting what you've learned into practice in your daily life.
