What is early childhood literacy?

'Literacy', in its dictionary definition, is the ability to read, write, and understand text.
However, during early childhood, children experience both "conventional literacy," which refers to stereotypical reading and writing behaviors, and "emergent literacy," which emphasizes interest and curiosity in literacy that appears naturally during development.
