Officials at the National Institutes of Health in the United States patent the results of research funded by taxpayer money, lend them to pharmaceutical companies, and collect royalties for using the patents.
Pharmaceutical companies account for 45% of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's total budget and 75% of its drug review budget.
If companies selling defective products are exempt from liability for the problems they cause, it is questionable whether they have any incentive to improve the quality of their products, and whether public health agencies that rely financially on companies can conduct fair drug reviews.


The Korean government announced that it will provide free 6-valent combination vaccine (DTaP + Hib + IPV + HepB) to children starting in January 2025.
About a decade ago, a similar 5-valent combination vaccine (DTP + Hib + Hep B) was released. When the patent for the DTP vaccine expired, oversupply led to a plummet in profits, and vaccinations for the newly released Hib and Hep B vaccines were sluggish, pharmaceutical companies halted the supply of DTP and combined the five components into a new vaccine.
Therefore, the third world countries that had been administering the DTP vaccine had no choice but to administer the pentavalent vaccine, even though they were crying and eating mustard.
The yield of the 5-in-1 combination vaccine soared by 1,440% compared to when the vaccines were administered separately, but the vaccine's efficacy was actually lower.
The pentavalent combination vaccine was used in Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Vietnam, and India under pressure from the World Health Organization, but was discontinued after a series of infant deaths.
