Description
Book Introduction
A hot topic of life lecture that resonated with 5 million people worldwide!
The question, “What do you want to be?”
If you still feel burdened even as an adult

The world teaches us to keep an eye on everything and to dig only one well.
He tells you to focus solely on one thing, to ask if you have the 'persistence', and to jump into something with the determination to invest '10,000 hours'.
Chanting the slogan, "Just do one thing well and you'll get into college," we struggled to discover our one passion and true calling, believing that the rewards of success and happiness would follow.
But what if the path you chose was wrong? Or, more importantly, what if you can't choose just one in the first place? Emily Wapnick, author of the book and the subject of the most popular TED talk, "Why Some People Don't Have a Call," which captivated 5 million people worldwide, says:
Some people cannot and should not decide on one path.

People who have a wide range of interests, are multi-talented, and have their own passions, but have not achieved anything significant. They are wandering around looking for their calling, but there are too many things they want to do to focus on just one.
While those around them might nag them to stop wasting their talents and find what they truly want, Emily says it's their distraction that is the potential we should be focusing on.
And they call those who walk their own path with diverse curiosity and passion 'multipotentialites', and preach that their ability to integrate, learn quickly, and adapt are the talents most desired in this ever-changing society.
People who may seem shallow, shallow, and lack clear goals, but who learn faster than anyone else and weave those experiences together to create new things.
Even if they can't become specialists, they are the ones who can immerse themselves in something in an instant and easily integrate with anyone, and they will ultimately change the world.
You who have been struggling because you can't seem to choose just one, or you who have been working hard to choose just one thing but have been feeling empty because you feel like life is not satisfying.
It's time to break free from the romantic notions that limit our own possibilities.
Filled with original and actionable advice for a fulfilling life, specific and diverse examples, and insights, this book will serve as a wonderful guide for those willing to explore the boundless universe of interests.

Into the book
“For the first time, I faced the truth about myself that I had been ignoring for so long.
Yes, I can't do anything consistently.
This realization was like the moment when a drug addict wakes up from a hallucination, and it was not a pleasant feeling at all.
Tens of thousands of thoughts ran through my head.
Will I ever truly discover my calling? Does a calling even exist? If what I've been doing isn't my calling, will I ever find it again? Will I truly be content with a single career for years, or will I eventually lose interest in all careers? Among these, one question particularly struck me.
“If I am someone who has to move across many fields to be happy, can I really be a person who fulfills my role?”__p.17

“One of the reasons the question, ‘What do you want to be?’ confuses our hearts and minds is because it implies that we must have only one career.
If a five-year-old were to choose ten possible futures, the adult asking the question would likely say something like this:
"So which one? You can't be everything!" Certainly, as we enter adolescence, it becomes difficult to be tolerant of answers like, "I'll be a marine biologist, a textile artist, and a journalist."
Although it's difficult to distinguish, we can answer the question, 'What do you want to be when you grow up?' by saying, 'You are only allowed one identity in this life.
This can be understood as meaning, 'Okay, which one would you like to choose?'
"What a terrifying question! It's no wonder questions like this stress us out." __p.19

“To do many things is to be ordinary in them all.” From a mathematical perspective, this is true.
If Person A spends 10,000 hours learning one skill, while Person B spends 2,500 hours learning four skills, wouldn't Person B be "less proficient" (or, in other words, more average) in both areas? This argument is based on the notion that quality is the only thing that matters in technology.
I would argue that creativity, originality and passion are all equally important.
Does someone with decades of music training necessarily write more beautiful (or more profitable) music than a musician with only a few years of experience? Is an experienced high school teacher necessarily a better teacher than someone just starting out in the profession, yet brimming with determination and passion? The answer to both of these cases is no, or at least not necessarily.
__p.33

“One of the most difficult things about living as a multipotentialite is deciding which of our ‘potentials’ we will develop.
We can do many things, but perhaps not all at once.
You might want to sit down at this point.
But literally, you can't do everything.
After all, our time on Earth is limited.
Yet, we can still experience so much in a lifetime! There's a vast gap between doing everything under the sun and doing just one thing, and that's where multipotentialites come in." __p.167

On a bad day, it's easy to wish we could just get away from the world and explore our various interests alone.
But isolating ourselves and relegating our versatility to a personal space doesn't serve us or anyone else.
Being a multipotentialite, 'showing off and proud,' means learning to connect with the world, talking about our work, and listening to our inner voice even in the face of fear and resentment.
Revealing everything isn't always comfortable or easy.
But doing it together is how we create movement.

Publisher's Review
I can't choose just one
Perhaps it is our identity and our life.
"What do you want to be when you grow up?"

This question, which we have been asked dozens of times since before we even entered kindergarten, contains an unintended trap.
It's a feeling of pressure, as if I have to choose just one answer.
As we grew older, the weight of the questions became heavier and we became more and more anxious.
Why do my dreams change so often? Isn't being able to do everything, even a little, ultimately just being ordinary? Why is it so hard for me to explain exactly what I'm doing now? And the inability to answer all these questions with clarity leads me to seriously consider whether there's something wrong with me.
If this sounds like you, you might be a multipotentialite.
That you are a person who can embrace all of my countless dreams.
Einstein, Franklin, Leonardo da Vinci, and Steve Jobs...
What they have in common is that, even without a single 'true calling', they sought to create their own world with their various interests and passions.
Don't be afraid of words.
Multi-potential-light, a new word that refers to people who are not the most talented, but rather the most curious in various fields and have a lot of potential.

They excel at integrating ideas from various fields of interest.
Also, because I have experience focusing on one thing and then focusing on another, I learn quickly.
And they have the adaptability to change into the person needed in a given situation.
In today's world where everything changes so rapidly, this may not be the most useful talent.
So what's the ideal career path for these individuals? Should they abandon traditional employment and start their own business for freedom and flexibility? Or should they turn their numerous hobbies into jobs, achieving a "work-life balance"? Fortunately, or unfortunately, there's no single path that's perfect for multitalented individuals.
Even though they may have a keen curiosity about numerous topics, they also have different values and priorities.

Diversity is unique,
Your other activities are not a waste of time.

Author Emily Wapnick created a sensation when her TED talk resonated with 5 million viewers worldwide.
She too is a multi-talented person and a human Venn diagram who has walked different paths in different fields such as film, law, music, and design.
Through years of counseling and interviews, she has discovered that multipotentialites share some important similarities and work in certain patterns.
And based on real-world examples, I wrote this book to share "How to Design a Sustainable Life for All Your Passions" instead of "10,000 Hours of Practice to Become an Expert."
Chapter 1 tells us that the world is beginning to take notice of the abilities of multi-talented people, who have been criticized for being absent-minded and lacking perseverance.
He also lists the special strengths of the multi-talented people the era desires and says that their happiness must be fulfilled through meaning and diversity.
Chapter 2 defines four patterns that enable multipotentialites to work satisfactorily.
In a world that idolizes experts, it's quite difficult to secure a stable life and enjoy the freedom to pursue your passions.
Of course, it is also possible to mix all of these appropriately.
Even for the same person, at different points in life, different lifestyles may seem more attractive.
Chapter 3 provides techniques for navigating various fields effectively in everyday life, as well as ways to deal with fear and criticism.
The appendix provides a list of famous multipotentialites who can serve as role models, examples of interdisciplinary fields in which multipotentialites can thrive, and a fun tool to practice which career models are right for you.

Innovation comes from experience.
In the end, the point is that you don't have to choose just one.
A zigzagging path can be beautiful, and it's also natural not to know what one true passion is.
If you haven't had a dream yet, that's okay too.
If so, wouldn't it be more helpful for me to live while protecting my true self by leaving my uncontrollable curiosity and attraction alone?
Of course, revealing everything you dream to the world isn't always comfortable or easy.
《How to Become Everything》 will accompany you on your journey, rediscovering the various powers latent within you and teaching you how to cultivate a rich life without sacrificing your passion.

The perfect thing to change the world,
The era of multi-talented people is coming.

Editing diverse experiences to create something new is in line with the concepts of fusion and integration that have been emphasized in recent years.
Just as the humanities and engineering come together to form cognitive engineering, and ecology, economics, and technology come together to form sustainable development, even at this very moment, new fields are constantly emerging due to someone's passionate curiosity and boundless love for their interests.

For multi-talented people, work time is learning time.
The act of learning enriches our lives and allows us to see the world and ourselves from new perspectives.
You may discover hidden potential and opportunities that you were unaware of, and you may even create a brand that says, "If you leave it to that person, they can solve anything."
As these small experiences of achievement accumulate, not only will your self-esteem improve, but your resilience to bounce back from failure will also increase.
According to a survey of life trends, the standard for good work is changing to 'how happy one can be at work.'
Rather than obsessing over the word "best," more and more people are prioritizing work-life balance.
In the multi-talented person's terms, fulfillment comes from "the certain happiness of small moments spent delving into various interests."

If you've ever struggled with guilt over quickly growing cold toward something you were passionate about, the challenge of having to explain your ever-changing work, or the fear of time passing without return, this book might offer some comfort.
Following your heart's lead is not a waste of time.
Having many dreams will become your identity and your life.
There is nothing wrong with you.
