Welcome to Dokdo Stationery Store
Description
Book Introduction
“We create what we must protect.”
Is there a stationery store in Ulleungdo that promotes Dokdo, our land?
Korea's first Dokdo-themed shop, "Dokdo Stationery," has been adrift for 12 years.
When you think of Ulleungdo, you usually think of squid and pumpkin taffy, but there is a new name that has recently come to mind.
It's called "Dokdo Stationery Store"! It's called Dokdo Stationery Store, but it's not your typical stationery store selling indoor shoes and gym uniforms in front of schools.
You could say it's Korea's first Dokdo edit shop that creates and curates all kinds of hip and hot goods.
From the extinct Dokdo sea lion to native plants that only grow on Dokdo, to the hidden landscapes and special products of Ulleungdo, an island that embraces the pristine nature, Dokdo Stationery is conveying the stories we must remember and protect through its merchandise.
Why did the author, a marketer at the forefront of trends in the film industry, leave Seoul and open Dokdo Stationery on Ulleungdo? Let's delve into the turbulent start-up period, marked by twists and turns as fierce as typhoons, and the 12-year struggle for survival on a remote island.
The author, a fifth-generation Ulleungdo native, shares travel tips and an exciting story about life on Ulleungdo, highlighting its unique ecology and culture.

Into the book
In the summer of 2014, as if by chance or fate, I opened Dokdo Stationery Store on Ulleungdo.
The name is 'stationery store', but of course, if it's a stationery store in front of a school, it doesn't sell indoor shoes or gym clothes.
There are no claw machines in front of the stationery store.
Dokdo Stationery manufactures and sells stationery, fashion items, and design products commemorating Dokdo and Ulleungdo.
--- p.5 From “Living in Ulleungdo”
Even though I often thought, 'I can't live here, I have to leave,' I was able to get through each day by occasionally meeting up with my childhood friends and having a drink.
Then, I met my husband and after a short relationship, we got married.
Instead of leaving Ulleungdo, he ended up staying there!
--- p.27 From “Giving Birth Away”
The more I thought about it, the more I felt regretful that, despite the island's significance, there was a lack of stories and products that could symbolize its significance.
My thoughts raced and I began to wonder what kind of souvenir I could make.
Then, out of the blue, the name ‘Dokdo Stationery Store’ came to mind.
I felt confident that this was it.
--- p.40 From “Dokdo, You Are My Destiny”
It is no exaggeration to say that Dokdo Stationery Store opened thanks to the goodwill of many people.
And I know that this goodwill is not something I received because I am good.
Because I started out with the desire to protect and promote Dokdo, the more I worked, the more I felt the interest and support I received.
When I first started Dokdo Stationery, I had a feeling that I was doing something good for Ulleungdo and Dokdo, but gradually I came to realize that I was indebted to Dokdo.
--- p.50 From “Indebted to Dokdo”
If South Korea's manufacturing industry joined forces, they might be able to make a robot Taekwon V, but a business novice like me couldn't even commission a Taekwon V headpiece.
I'm sure it's somewhere, but I couldn't find the factory door.
Of course, that wasn't Ulleungdo.
--- p.88 From "Breaking the Seal? No, Breaking the Factory"
A place that was once a home of love and hate.
But now, it is where Dokdo Stationery, which is like another alter ego of mine, is located, and where my child's future lies.
Whenever I think of Ulleungdo, my heart is always filled with complex emotions.
Still, there is no place as lovely as this during the season when the sky and the sea are all blue and green.
--- p.107 From “Spring and Summer in Ulleungdo”
I think I felt it deeply.
No matter how well I do on my own, Dokdo Stationery is ultimately part of the Ulleungdo region, and I personally felt the crisis that if no one visits Ulleungdo, the customers visiting Dokdo Stationery will also disappear.
The region and I have an inseparable relationship.

Publisher's Review
Cancellations are a daily occurrence! Closed on typhoon days! Closed even during heavy snow!
There are many things that exist, and many things that do not exist.
The reason for opening a stationery store on the remote island of Ulleungdo
An island that preserves the mystery of ancient times.
Ulleungdo Island, with its distinct climate and culture from the mainland, is the place in South Korea most directly influenced by nature and weather.
Because it is in the path of typhoons, you cannot enter or leave the island during bad weather, and in winter, the snow piles up higher than a person, so much so that it is nicknamed a winter kingdom.
The author, a fifth-generation Ulleungdo native, lived in Seoul as a film marketer until 20 years ago when he returned to his hometown, a place he had longed to leave, and opened Dokdo Stationery Store.
This is because we wanted to convey the history and stories of Dokdo, which we must remember and tell, to the next generation in a more interesting and new way.
“We are opening ‘Dokdo Stationery Store’ with the hope of protecting our land, Dokdo, without forgetting a single blade of grass or fish that lives there.”
However, the first business started ahead of enthusiasm was full of twists and turns, and the process was even more difficult because it was located in an island or mountainous area, where shipping costs doubled even for a single product sample.
Despite his ambitious mission, his meager business experience led to trial and error, and the process of establishing the brand's identity was nothing less than a process of self-reflection.
But he didn't give up.
Because I thought it was something only I could do.
Local brands that coexist with the region
A sustainable future dreamed of in a region where people are leaving
There are things that are so familiar that they are invisible when they are close.
An unfamiliar and new landscape that can only be seen when you take a step back and look at it.
As a child, he longed to leave the island surrounded by the sea on all sides, but upon returning to his hometown, he finally opened his eyes to the natural and cultural values that only Ulleungdo possesses.
A natural environment and seasonal foods that cannot be found in big cities, a life that follows the flow of nature, and above all, a natural environment that we must protect and a history that we must remember.
Ulleungdo, like other rural and fishing villages, is also facing serious problems of population cliff and regional extinction.
It's hard to find young people on the island, and even those that do exist are decreasing every day.
If Ulleungdo, the only gateway to Dokdo, were to disappear, the unique culture and history that we have painstakingly preserved would gradually lose their power and eventually be forgotten.
Ulleungdo is an essential base for protecting Dokdo, an island where humans cannot live.
The author is working on various projects to combine "Dokdo Defense," which feels like an outdated, old-fashioned trend, with cultural products to generate sustained interest.
Moreover, it brings a breath of fresh air to Ulleungdo by adding environmental values that we must preserve in the era of climate crisis.
Even though it is a very small wind blowing from a small stationery store, it can easily be shaken and toppled by the storms of large capital and the times.
But his struggle to get back up and find his own way will provide encouragement and strength to anyone looking to run their own brand or start something new.
This book contains the small but steady efforts of one person over 12 years and the changes they brought about.
