These devilish whispers constantly echo in our heads like error messages from an old version of the operating system.
The scariest thing is that we don't even know we're hearing these sounds.
It flows as if someone else is controlling it.
Its true identity is the ‘devil’s whisper’ hidden in our hearts.

However, the author of this book, “Mental Design that is Unshaken by the Devil’s Whispers,” says that we must realize one important fact here.
These whispers are actually the words of a 'psychological security program' installed in our minds during childhood.
Just as we install security systems in our homes, as children we create these security programs in our minds to avoid getting hurt, to be loved, and to be safe.
And originally, all of these programs were created with good intentions to protect us.
But there is a fatal problem here.
The problem is that the current complex situation and problems are being dealt with with a clumsy security program created by an immature child a long time ago, and the system is constantly crashing and malfunctioning.


Mental design is the art of designing your mind the way you want it.
It's like updating the operating system of a computer, redesigning the old mental OS that was created in childhood to fit the present.
The reason we keep repeating the same mistakes isn't because we lack willpower, but because the old operating system, installed since childhood, is trying to handle the complex realities of adulthood.
What would happen if you tried to run modern software on an older computer? Naturally, system errors would occur, the program would crash, and unexpected results would occur.
The same goes for our minds.
There is nothing wrong with your hardware (essentially you).
However, the software (mental OS) must be updated appropriately.


The mental design presented in this book, “Mental Design Unshaken by the Devil’s Whispers,” consists of a four-step system.


Step 1 Pattern Analysis: This is the step to accurately determine the version of the mental OS currently running, just like checking the 'system information' of a computer.
Step 2: Pattern Decoding: This is the step where we search for the origin of the pattern, just like a CSI forensic team.
You will come to understand 'when, why, and with what good intentions' the various versions of the OS installed one after another since childhood were created.
Step 3 Pattern Decomposition: This is the step to stop the automatic execution of the old version of the OS.
Whenever an older version of the OS tries to launch automatically, it pauses for a moment to clear out any misbehaving background apps.
Step 4 Pattern Redesign: This is the step where you go beyond removing the old version of the OS and design and install a new OS that is optimized for your current situation.
This is where a lifelong, automatic self-care system is completed.
These four stages do not progress linearly, but rather repeat and deepen like a spiral.
It is not something you do once and for all, but rather you continuously apply it to various areas of life and upgrade your mental system in a sophisticated way.

Into the book
Just as trying to run modern programs on an old Windows 95 system can cause the system to crash, trying to handle the complexities of today's reality with an outdated mental OS can lead to constant emotional conflict and relationship failure.
The bigger problem is that we don't recognize these mental fit errors. Because the operating system operates automatically, we don't even think about making conscious choices.
It's like wearing winter clothes and feeling stuffy because it's hot, but you can't think of taking them off.
The first step to changing your mental fit is to recognize what mental OS you are currently using.
And you need to evaluate whether that OS is suitable for your current situation and role.
If that doesn't work, you need to consciously design and install a mental OS that fits the new situation.
This is the core of ‘mental design’.

To reconcile differences in intimacy styles, you need to find compromise while respecting each other's needs.
When high-density and moderate-density types meet, they can approach each situation differently, such as, “Let’s have deep conversations during special times and interact comfortably during normal times.”
When autonomous and dependent types meet, a balance can be achieved by ensuring regular meetings while also ensuring sufficient personal time.

No matter how perfectly I update my mental OS, relationships are always created by two or more people.
The other person also has a different OS than me, and they have their own patterns, wounds, and growth process.
Expecting others to change immediately just because we change may be a new form of control.
Instead, what we can do is create better 'compatibility' in our relationships.
All we have to do is continue to update our OS, understand and respect the patterns of others, and create common protocols for communication.
This process can sometimes be frustrating and you may fall back into old patterns.
But that too is a natural process.
Relationships are not perfect machines, but living organisms that continually change and grow.

The critics are the voices of the older versions of the OS we looked at earlier.
He said, “You’ll fail again,” “You can’t do it,” “You have to be perfect,” “Give up,”
He constantly whispers things like, “It’s no use anyway.”
We now know the identity of this cynic.
That it was a protection program created to protect children from being hurt, to be loved, and to be safe.
But guardian angels are different.
Our guardian angels are always on our side.
He offers warm words of encouragement, such as, “It’s okay, mistakes are opportunities for growth,” “You’re doing well enough now,” “It’s okay to take it slow,” “You are precious,” and “You can do it.”
What is surprising is that this guardian angel has been within us from the beginning.
It's just that the cynic's voice was too loud to be heard.
The cynic tries to protect us by warning us of danger and pointing out problems, while the guardian angel tries to protect us by encouraging and supporting us.
The problem is that most modern people are only accustomed to the voices of cynics.
Because I was exposed to more critical voices from a young age.
But now we can consciously amplify the voice of our guardian angels and diminish the voice of our cynics.

To automate your Guardian Angel OS, it's important to make it a daily habit.
Let's try these habits:
1 Minute Gratitude Meditation: Practice gratitude meditation for one minute at the same time every day.
Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and think of the things you are grateful for today.
One minute is a very short time, but if you repeat it every day, it strengthens the neural circuit of gratitude.

Self-Encouragement Notes Save messages from your guardian angel on your smartphone and receive them as notifications several times a day.
Messages like, “You’re doing great now,” “It’s okay to make mistakes,” and “You’re precious” can be helpful.
Repeatedly seeing these messages imprints positive self-talk on your brain.

Mistake Reframing: Every time you make a mistake, make a habit of asking yourself, "What did I learn from this mistake?"
And the answer is simply written down.
This way, mistakes become a source of growth rather than a source of self-reproach.

Before Bedtime Reflection Before falling asleep, take time to reflect and ask yourself, "When was the moment today when I acted like a guardian angel?"
Look for and acknowledge small acts of kindness, self-encouragement, and courage.
It doesn't have to be perfect.
If you could hear your guardian angel's voice just once a day, that would be enough.
