McKinsey's Logical Writing
McKinsey's Logical Writing
Description
Book Introduction
A founding member of the Korean branch of McKinsey, the world's leading consulting firm
Logical writing from a business writing authority and veteran consultant!
A diagram of the basics of writing that you can follow!

A unique book that diagrams logical writing, an essential competency for first-class management consultants and one of the most important business skills.
The author systematizes and explains writing skills based on the report writing principles, pyramid structure, reformulated sentences, and the 'purpose-reason-fact frame' that consultants at McKinsey are trained in.
It also introduces various structural frameworks for writing that can be actually used in the workplace, such as PREP (Conclusion-Reason-Case-Conclusion), CRF (Conclusion-Reason-Fact), and SDS (Outline-Detail-Outline), and helps readers acquire the ability to determine the order of writing and design the content according to the purpose.

Compared to existing practical writing books that focus on expressive power and sentence techniques, this book is clearly differentiated in that it first establishes a 'framework of thought' for writing.
Based on the equation 'writing = organizing thoughts', readers will experience organizing their thoughts while revising sentences.
Logical writing is suitable for all communication where logic is important, such as contracts, proposals, presentation materials, and emails and chats.
The book's greatest strength is its unique structure, which allows it to be read and used immediately within three hours using illustrations.

Into the book
Honorifics sometimes overlap with expressions that lower oneself and elevate the other person.
For example, expressions like "I'll come to your house" or "We'll speak to the manager" are used in a way that lowers oneself while elevating the other person.
When using honorifics, you must consider your relationship with the other person.
If you use inappropriate expressions towards someone of higher status, you may offend them.
It is important to use language with respect and courtesy.

You don't necessarily have to write your conclusion in the first paragraph.
First, I'll write it down in the order that's easiest to think about.
If you've written an essay, but the evidence and facts paragraphs don't connect naturally to "Because of ○○" and "It is ○○," try rearranging the pieces (content) like putting together a puzzle.
Once you become familiar with the three-tier pyramid structure, you can learn logical thinking.

--- pp.82-83

A sentence consists of a subject and a predicate.
The smallest unit of a sentence is a set of a subject, ‘what’, and a predicate, ‘do…’.
The subject is the word that is the subject of an action, state, or quality in a sentence, and the predicate is the word that receives the subject and describes the action, state, or quality of the subject.
To write easy-to-understand sentences, the subject and corresponding predicate must follow the basic principle of 'one subject, one predicate.'
Be careful because if you omit the necessary subject, it will be difficult to understand the meaning of the predicate.

When you want to include a lot of information in a text or sentence, if you just list it in a disorganized manner, it will be difficult for the reader to understand.
At this time, we use the modified summary method, which only writes the main points so that the reader can easily understand the information.
The reformatting method can be used in various documents such as reports and requests, as it is a method of writing without attaching items.
However, it takes a lot of skill to write concise, easy-to-understand sentences.
The 'numbering' method of placing numbers at the beginning of sentences is also convenient for organizing information.

Publisher's Review
Logical Writing, a writing method taught by global management consulting firms.
The fundamentals of logical writing, explained kindly by a veteran McKinsey consultant!

“Why are my writings always so long-winded and lacking in substance?”
“Even writing a short piece is difficult, and I don’t even know what to write in the first place.”
“I don’t even have a sense of what a good sentence is.”

If you look around, you will see that many people have difficulty writing like this.
This is especially true when you need to write something with a clear purpose, such as a report, proposal, or email.
We often attribute it to 'bad writing', but this book says otherwise.
“The problem is not with the writing, but with the structure of the thoughts.” If you can’t organize your thoughts, your writing won’t be organized either.
McKinsey's Logical Writing starts from that very point.
Before learning how to write well, first identify why sentences are awkward and, through the process of correcting those problems, develop the ability to think and organize logically.

This book goes beyond simply providing guidance on sentence structure and focuses on structuring your thinking about writing.
It is structured in a way that fosters the habit of dividing complex content into clear units and organizing them systematically, and to this end, it suggests methods for dividing and arranging thoughts into distinguishable forms such as 'shape, color, and size'.
Through this process, readers learn the flow of transforming thoughts into writing, and develop not only the skills to refine sentences but also the essential ability to design and deliver messages.
It is highly practical in that it is structured as a writing training course that can be immediately applied in the workplace, rather than remaining an abstract theory.

Author Yuji Akaba graduated from the University of Tokyo and Stanford University with degrees in engineering, and then worked as a strategy consultant at McKinsey & Company, one of the world's leading consulting firms, for 14 years.
Although he was more accustomed to logical thinking than anyone else, the thing he found most difficult when he first joined the company was 'writing'.
He was always at a standstill, not knowing how to organize and express his overflowing ideas. Eventually, through McKinsey's report writing method and structure training, he learned how to organize his thoughts and sentences together.
This book was written based on that experience.
The author addresses "why writing becomes awkward" before "how to write well." He presents various writing frameworks, including PREP, CRF, and the pyramid structure, identifies common errors in actual writing situations, and helps readers develop the ability to logically structure sentences, paragraphs, and overall flow.

Structure your thoughts and write a well-organized piece!
A way of thinking that will help you write like a top-notch management consultant.

McKinsey's Logical Writing is a practical guide designed to teach you how to structure your thoughts and communicate them accurately, using intuitive examples and visual flow.
Unlike existing writing books that focus on expressiveness or sense, this book focuses on 'thinking clearly.'
Rather than teaching how to write well, it first shows why the writing is awkward.
By identifying and correcting each cause of complexity in writing, such as misspellings, redundant expressions, and unclear sentence structures, readers learn to naturally coordinate the context of their thoughts and the flow of their expressions.
It is recommended for professionals who feel burdened by writing emails, reports, and proposals; students and job seekers who struggle to maintain a logical flow in their essays or presentations; and readers who want to move beyond emotional writing and learn a clear structure.
Especially for those who feel that they want to "write properly" rather than "write well," this book will serve as the most practical and clear guide.

Korea's first! Learn logical writing through diagrams.
A comprehensive, diagrammatic summary of techniques for writing any essay requiring logic!

Each chapter begins with a vivid cartoon depicting a working person's writing, intuitively showing how the flow of thought becomes distorted and how to fix it.
Rather than rigid theories, it teaches you to learn through trial and error in the field, so even readers who normally find writing difficult will be able to follow along easily.
This book does not simply teach you how to write sentences.
By dividing and organizing complex thoughts into 'shapes, colors, and sizes', we train the entire process of converting thoughts into writing.
The experience of organizing thoughts while revising sentences is the essence of writing that this book proposes.

The content is structured around common errors that occur in writing situations.
By following the flow of the conversation, the reader comes to understand how distortions of logic or ambiguities in expression arise and how they can be corrected.
Instead of rigid rules or theoretical explanations, the structure vividly shows real-life writing situations and trial and error, leading readers to empathize and diagnose and correct problems on their own.

This is a must-read for readers like this.

* Professionals who feel overwhelmed every time they write a plan, report, or email
* Students and job seekers who have difficulty organizing logical flow and messages
* Beginners in writing who want to organize their thoughts before expressing themselves.
* Readers looking for a practical writing style that prioritizes structure over feeling
* People who have a desire to 'write properly' rather than 'wanting to write well'

Ultimately, writing is the result of thought.
"McKinsey's Logical Writing" is the most realistic and effective writing strategy book needed to cultivate the "power to turn thoughts into words."
