Seongjusa Temple on Bulmosan Mountain, a temple built by a bear
“Changwon has been a city that smelted iron for 2,000 years.
Ancient relics related to iron have been discovered in Seongsan Shell Mound, Bongnim-dong, and Hyeon-dong.
Iron relics have also been discovered on Bulmosan Mountain, which is said to be the place where Queen Heo Hwang-ok of Gaya, the 'mother of the seven princes who left home,' came.
Bulmosan was also a mountain where furnaces were used for iron smelting.
There is a temple called ‘Seongjusa’ where a saint stayed on Bulmosan, the mother mountain.
For people of old, the name ‘Gomjeol’ was more familiar than ‘Seongjusa Temple’.
It is said that the name was given because a bear was said to have carried materials when building Daeungjeon.
So the temple was also called ‘Ungsinsa (Bear God Temple)’.
The old name of the nearby Jinhae is 'Ungcheon (熊川)'.
There must have been something to do with the bear.
Changwon has been a city where Buddhism has flourished since the Unified Silla period.
Seongjusa Temple, which represents Changwon, and Bongnimsa Temple, one of the nine mountain Seonmun temples, were built during this period.
Additionally, Changwon is the ‘city of Goryeo.’
The port from which the allied forces of Goryeo and Yuan set out to conquer Japan was Masan Happo, and the place where King Chungnyeol of Goryeo came down to Changwon and stayed for three months is believed to be the site of a temple in present-day Seongsan-gu.
In the 1970s, when the Changwon Industrial Complex was established, Changwon was transformed into the 'City of Steel' again.
And the Buddhist mind of Changwon is also being trained.
At its center is Seongjusa Temple, a temple built by a bear.
