Publisher's Review
In the 5th edition

This revised edition comes seven years after the publication of the fourth edition, and 20 years have already passed since the publication of the first edition.
In the meantime, both society and the academic environment have changed significantly, and perspectives and approaches to youth issues have also gradually broadened.
Nonetheless, this book is believed to have played a meaningful role in research and practice in related fields, as it provides a unique theoretical foundation and empirical basis for understanding juvenile delinquency in Korea.

However, as a long time has passed since the first draft was written, there were parts that did not reflect the latest research achievements accumulated over time or the rapidly changing social realities.
Accordingly, in this fifth edition, we have reexamined the entire content and revised it to actively reflect the latest research trends and social changes.
Additionally, Professor Song Hyo-jong of Korea University and Professor Park Yeo-ju of Daegu University newly participated in this revision.
The two professors' professional opinions and valuable advice greatly contributed to the completion of this revised edition.

Furthermore, considering the criticism that the content of each chapter was extensive and the sentences were somewhat difficult to understand, the fifth edition focused on revisiting the entire content, reflecting recent research trends and statistical data, and refining the expressions to make them clearer and easier to read.
We tried to eliminate unnecessary duplication or overly academic descriptions and improve the flow of sentences and the unity of expression.

Especially in the seven years since the fourth edition in 2018, our society has undergone great changes.
With the rapid advancement of digital technology, smartphones and social media have become deeply ingrained in the daily lives of young people, and the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic has brought about fundamental changes in their social relationships and learning environments.
Moreover, with the popularization of artificial intelligence technology and the emergence of new forms of digital crime, the environment surrounding youth is becoming more complex and rapidly changing at a level completely different from the past.
As a result, juvenile delinquency is also taking on a new form centered on cyberspace, and this is appearing in a complex connection with various social factors.

This revised edition reflects these changes by presenting the current state of juvenile delinquency through up-to-date statistical data, systematically explaining it from various theoretical perspectives, and introducing currently implemented policies and institutional response measures.
In this process, we have maintained academic depth while also considering practical applicability in the field, and ultimately hope that it will help understand and support young people in this changing era.
Finally, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to all the staff at Park Young-sa for their generous support in publishing this revised edition.
